* Relentless or continuous vomiting

* Drowsiness
* Personality change
* Disorentation or confusion
* Combativeness
* Delirium, convulsions, or loss of consciousness
You should consult a physician before you take any drugs to treat the flu or chicken pox. Back to Campus Information

Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin ASA) and Reyes Syndrome There is a very important reason why you should check with a health professional before using acetylsalicylic acid for children and teenagers who have the flu or chickenpox. Acetylsalicylic acid is commonly referred to as 'Aspirin' or 'ASA'. In cooperation with the Canadian Pediatric Association, Health and Welfare Canada has issued a warning asking that ASA or products containing ASA not be used for treating the symptoms of flu or chickenpox in those younger than 20 years of age. In addition, manufacturers of products containing ASA are now putting warnings on their labels saying that a doctor should be consulted before giving ASA to children or teenagers who have the flu or chickenpox.
  • a viral illness (such as the flu or chickenpox) that seems to last longer than in others who have the same illness.
  • frequent or persistent nausea and vomiting.
  • a change in personality, confusion, agitation or combativeness.
  • coma.
  • seizures.
If these symptoms occur in a child or teenager who has been given ASA for the symptoms of flu or chickenpox, you should seek medical attention immediately.
This information is of a general nature and may not apply to your special circumstances.If you have specific questions, please contact your physician or an appropriate health care professional.

Something not here that you want to know? Well come on ask your question The question:
What pain reliever should I give to my child? What's the difference between acetaminophen and ibuprofen, and why should we avoid aspirin? The pediatrician answers:
Pain relievers are also called analgesics in medicine, and there are many kinds. One of the oldest and most popular analgesics is aspirin (or acetylsalicylic acid). In the latter part of this century, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) have all been developed as well. Most parents today still remember the yummy bottle of orange-flavored children’s aspirin from our childhood (my cousin ate a whole bottle). In 1974, however, the incidence of Reyes Syndrome, a rare disorder affecting the brain and liver, suddenly increased often occurring in children following influenza ("the flu") or chickenpox, and was possibly associated with the use of aspirin.

The topic you have chosen is aspirin and children under age twelve.
In a moment, there will be information on how to help a child who has a fever. But first, advice has been issued by physicians that you should not give children's aspirin, or any medicine with aspirin in it, to any child under twelve years old. A medicine that has aspirin in it, will say so on the packet.
This advice has been given because of worry about a very rare illness called Reyes Syndrome. Reyes Syndrome is a serious condition and there is evidence that aspirin may be linked with the disease.

Over the years, david castle has composed many symphonic works as well as conducted many of the world's finest musicians including the London Royal Philharmonic, members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and many talented studio musicians. The following are various occasions when david has conducted his compositions for orchestra. Pictured above, david castle conducts his "Adagio For Jaime," a symphonic work that david composed in memory of Jaime Beth Slavin, a bright, young teenager who died of Reyes Syndrome. Her family members are friends of david's. As a result of Jaime Beth Slavin's life experience the national Reyes Syndrome Foundation was created. Jill Slavin, golf pro coach and loving mother of Jaime Beth, organized Celebrity Golf Tournaments and raised donations to find the cure for Reyes Syndrome. Harvey Korman, Maclean Stevenson and Buddy Hackett were just a few of the lengendary celebrities that performed unselfishly to help the Reyes Syndrome Foundation. Jill Slavin's hard work and dedication to this cause brought about great strides forward in the defeat of this disease. Tragically, she died of a car accident some years later. "Adagio For Jaime" became the "theme song" for the Reyes Syndrome Foundation and the performances pictured above were some of those from the Celebrity Golf Tournaments in Calabasas, California, USA.

Information concerning Reye's syndrome.
http://www.thearc.org/faqs/reyes.html
Reye's Syndrome
by Leigh Ann Reynolds, M.S.S.W., M.P.A. What is Reye's syndrome? Reye's (pronounced "rye") syndrome is a disease which is believed to be caused by the ingestion of medicines (such as aspirin) that contain salicylate (pronounced "sa(LISS(a(late") that affects all organs of the body, but affects the liver and brain most lethally. It occurs when abnormal accumulations of fat develop in the liver and other organs of the body, along with a severe increase of pressure in the brain. It affects mostly children and teenagers and appears soon after flu-like infection or chicken pox. Reye's syndrome occurs most frequently during the months of January, February and March when influenza is most common, although cases have been reported throughout the year. Reports of the syndrome appeared as early as 1929, but it wasn't until 1963 that the symptoms were first recognized as a distinct disease by R. Douglas Reye, M.D., an Australian pathologist. Dr. Reye suspected that a drug or poison (later identified as aspirin) triggered the disease's development, but there was no proof of such a substance in the homes of the children who acquired the illness, nor did autopsies reveal the presence of any such substance ingested by the child. Can taking aspirin cause Reye's syndrome?

It is named after the US doctor who first diagnosed it in 1963. It is mostly children that are affected, although adults can also suffer. It is thought, although it has still not been absolutely proven, that aspirin may increase the risk of contracting RS. What is RS? RS is not contagious. It occurs during the recovery period following a viral infection. Symptoms are persistent vomiting, loss of consciousness, convulsions, delirium and personality changes. If not treated in time, it can go on to harm the liver and brain. Brain damage may occur due to an increase in pressure within the brain and the liver can become grossly enlarged. However, RS is so rare and is usually diagnosed in time to prevent severe damage to the body. What causes RS?
