Reyes Syndrome in Children
Posted by Mike Kremer on Oct 26, 2002 at 17:51
Reyes syndrome, the causes are not fully understood
but it may be triggered in children who are given 'Aspirin' to bring down their fever, while suffering a viral illness.
The UK Gov had already banned the giving of Aspirin products to any child under 12 years old, has now hardened that advice to include all children of 16 years and under.
*I cannot find the latest UK Gov warning, but "Reyes Syndrome" will find similar on the Web.*

STATE HEALTH DIRECTOR WARNS THAT ASPIRIN CONTAINS INGREDIENTS THAT ARE DANGEROUS TO CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS
Parents and caregivers should use medicines that contain acetaminophen to
treat flu or cold symptoms or chickenpox in children and teenagers because aspirin contains ingredients that have been linked to a rare disease. Salicylates, the main ingredients found in aspirin, have been associated with the development of a rare condition known as Reye's syndrome, a disease that can lead to coma, brain damage and even death in children and teenagers suffering from the flu, flu-like illnesses or chickenpox. If children and teenagers have flu symptoms, it is very important for parents and caregivers to remember not to give them aspirin as a remedy. In general, children and teenagers should not be given aspirin or aspirin-containing products unless prescribed by their physician. Medicines that contain acetaminophen, such as Tylenol®, Datril®, Liquiprim® and Tempra®, should be used to treat symptoms of flu and colds, such as fever, headache, muscle aches, coughing and sore throat, in children and teenagers.

Reye's Syndrome is a childhood complication that can occur after a viral infection. The child will get a very high fever, convulsions that sometimes will result in a coma. This article will go over what causes Reye's syndrome, what the symptoms are and what to do if your child gets it. The cause of Reyes Syndrome is not totally understood by doctors yet: however there have been connections made between taking aspirin while having a viral illness. This is why you should never give a child any form of aspirin or any product containing aspirin. bodyOffer(22895) Reyes Syndrome is most commonly developed in children up to the age of 18. And strangely enough it occurs mostly in the fall and winter months. The symptoms of Reyes Syndrome are fatigue, fever, disorientation, headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, irritability, aggression or apathy and loss of memory. Your child will have just been recovering from a viral illness, such as chicken pox, and then they will get the above symptoms and be sick all over again. The condition will change rapidly to more serious complications; loss of consciousness, hallucinations, hyperventilation, weakness and seizures. Take your child to the emergency room immediately with any of the above symptoms. The earlier you can get them treatment the complications will be less severe. Some of the complications of this disease are life threatening and debilitating involving the pancreas, liver, brain, kidney, heart, spleen and lymph nodes.

Reye's Syndrome
Dear Editor, Reye's Syndrome is a disease which affects organs of the body, but most lethally the brain and liver. It appears with greatest frequency during January, February and March when influenza is most common. Cases have been reported in every month of the year. An epidemic of flu or chicken pox is commonly followed by an increase in the number of cases of Reye's Syndrome. No age group is immune; however, the disease usually affects children from infancy to about 19 years of age. The largest number of reported cases has occurred in the 10-14 age group. Increasing numbers of reported cases have been in adolescents and young adults. Reyes is defined as a two-phased illness because it is almost always associated with a previous viral infection, such as influenza or chicken pox. Scientists do know that Reyes Syndrome is not contagious and the cause is unknown. Clusters of cases have occurred in some areas. Reyes Syndrome is often misdiagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, drug overdose, poisoning, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or psychiatric illness. Reyes Syndrome usually appears soon after a flu-like infection, chicken pox, or any virus. Early signs are continuous vomiting, listlessness, loss of energy, drowsiness, irritability, aggressiveness, contusion and irrational behavior. If any of the symptoms of Reye's Syndrome develop, do not use aspirin or anti-nausea medicine. Phone your physician immediately.

Our Thinkquest team wanted to do something that all kids could relate to. Most kids (and some adults) are afraid of going to the doctor or afraid of a disease they might get.To paraphrase Dr. Martin Luther King, people are afraid of what they don't know. We hope that by giving people knowledge of medicine, people will be able to make good choices about their health. We decided to include information on Aches and Pains, History of Medicine, Home Remedies, Childhood Diseases, and the gross part of medicine that we call Gross Anatomy. We also included some interactive sites and a chat room so kids could share experiences and get immediate feedback. October 20, 2001 The Reyes Syndrome So, I’ve finally figured out what was bothering me: it’s the Reyes Syndrome. I’ve tried so hard but I’ve just come back full circle. Reyes, himself, brought great joy and companionship to my life. Putting aside all of his many, many, many, many good points, he showed me that regardless of my best intentions and my personal inability to harm anyone for any reason, I still could hurt someone I cared for, someone I loved. Never quite got over that. Kind of changed me. If it was possible, I felt more withdrawn from the world as ever. In a word, I shut down, never dealt with it. Just tried to move on and did. I think I did quite well burying it deep inside: that is, until now. Now, the time when everything about people’s idea of the world seems to be slipping, I feel powerless to help them realize how much things haven’t changed. It seems that I am powerless to help them. All the sciences, analysis, statistics, theology, philosophy, sociology, tid-bits of dreams, and endless hours of wonderment don’t add up to a hill of beans if it can’t be relay it to another person: something I’ve always prided myself on being able to do. So, it’s back. That makes it a syndrome: the Reyes Syndrome. The feeling of being powerless to change, rather, to unchanged things and having to deal with those things that are against your nature, experience, and desire. I suppose I’m dealing with it though. Not by burying it but actually working through it. How? staying home, thinking, talking, writing, reading, watching, waiting. Nice thing is: it’s all working out, as usual. Realization: somewhere up there I have the knowledge and the ability to resolve.

  • Join a Discussion on Science in the News By LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN M.D. n 1951, pediatricians in Sydney, Australia, were puzzled by the death of a 10-month-old boy. The child had been screaming and vomiting for 30 hours, and doctors believed that he had a systemic infection or meningitis. But it was neither. Peering into a standard microscope at tissues from the boy's autopsy, Dr. Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye found no evidence of infection. Instead, he noticed distinct liver and brain damage of a type that he had never seen. Over the next 11 years at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Dr. Reye identified 20 more cases of what his colleagues nicknamed Reye's syndrome. The doctors suspected the damage had resulted from a toxin they could not identify. In 1963, Dr. Reye (pronounced like rye) described the cases in The Lancet. Although the report came from the same hospital where in 1942 Dr. Norman Gregg first recognized the damage that rubella virus infection in a pregnant woman could have on her fetus, Reye's syndrome drew little attention. Still, these reports started a chain of events that led to one of the century's major public health triumphs, while leaving the man the syndrome was named for nearly obscure.
