Ask the Doctor
Q. Restless Leg Syndrome Every night before I fall asleep I develop an unpleasant wriggly sort of sensation in my legs. Massaging my legs sometimes helps it go away, but otherwise I have to get up and walk around. It can go on for ages and is now regularly disturbing my sleep so that I feel tired all day. What's causing this and, what can I do about it? Mary Dr Trisha Macnair responds You are describing what is known as 'restless legs syndrome', a very common condition which affects up to 1 in 12 of the population. For most people, it is mild and improves with simple measures, although for a few, more intensive medical therapy is needed. There are 4 characteristic features in restless legs syndrome. These include:
  • An irritating, non-painful sensation in your legs that gives you an overwhelming urge to move your legs. Occasionally, this sensation also occurs in the arms. Symptoms occur (or are worse) when you are resting. They improve when you move your legs around.

Can't Sit Still Promising Treatments for Restless Leg Syndrome May Be on the Way
    By Dr. Tim Johnson
    Feb. 19
The Baltimore woman is among the estimated 12 million Americans who suffer from restless legs syndrome, or RLS. It is a neurological disorder characterized by unusual sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them in order to relieve these feelings. The disorder's unusual sensations can strike at any time. Some patients with restless legs say it is like having caffeine shooting through their veins. Others say it feels like a surge of electricity. For now, most patients are treated with dopamine drugs, including Requip, Mirapex and Permax, which are commonly prescribed for Parkinson's patients. Ropinerole, the newest in a long line of treatments, is currently being reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration. If approved, it will be the first drug to specifically treat the condition. Mews says the hardest part about the disorder is that she can't make it stop.

Penn State University researcher James Connor, PhD, led a team that autopsied the brains of seven deceased people with restless leg syndrome. The findings: Nothing was wrong with the brains themselves. That's good news. Some experts had feared that the syndrome might mean some kind of Alzheimer's-like degenerative disease. What Connor's team found was a problem with brain cells in a specific part of the middle brain known as the substantia nigra.

    Restless Legs Syndrome
Imagine having an uncomfortable feeling that causes you to constantly move your legs. Then imagine the sensation gets worse at night. It's called restless legs syndrome, and it's a real-life nightmare for as many as 15 percent of Americans. Restless legs syndrome is a common problem, but one that is not always easy to diagnose. That was the case for Patricia Rash, a Marshall county woman who went more than five years without a good night's sleep. Then she learned about an experimental medication that's helping her sleep better. "I would be awake maybe a half-hour or so each time I got up, and I was getting up like six times in the night with this," says Rash. Then Rash learned about a new treatment for restless leg syndrome, available through the Sleep Disorders Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Researchers are currently studying a drug, which is designed to replace chemicals in the body that are missing in people with restless leg syndrome.

Periodic Limb Movement/Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
    General Information
Periodic Limb Movement condition is characterized by the jerking of a persons leg (or arm) during sleep. Each twitch may last from 1-3 seconds; about every 10-60 seconds. This may occur for only a few minutes or last for hours. In severe cases, the twitches may last all night. The movements themselves seem to do no damage, and some good sleepers experience them without problem. However, if the twitches are strong, or the person is a light sleeper, they can wake a person up. Because they occur before the wakening, you don't know what woke you up. If the awakenings are frequent, it can result in excessive daytime sleepiness. No one really knows the cause of these movements; there are likely to be a variety of causes. Sometimes they are related to certain medications, poor circulation, a metabolic disease, kidney disease or folic acid defficiency. There are some medications which have been used to successfully treat this condition.
    Restless Legs Syndrome
Many people with periodic movements also have Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), and almost all those with RLS have Periodic Movements. With RLS. there are strong sensations deep within the leg muscles and knees that cause a powerful urge ot move. "It feels like bugs crawling!" This causes problems falling asleep. There are a variety of causes - poor circulation; changes associated with pregnancy and vitamin deficiencies. There are some medications which seem to help. All stimulants such as coffee, tea and chocolate should be avoided.

Does anyone have any information to share regarding restless legs syndrome? Interested in causes and remedies, including info. on Calm's forte night time remedy or other medications. Thanks from A Very Unrested kicker. An unrested kicker I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia early this year. One of the associated symptoms was restless leg syndrome. I have to say that Calmsforte has done the trick 99% of the time for me. I'm 38 weeks pregnant at this point and wouldn't be able to sleep much without it. Someone recommended Boiron's Quietude, but it did nothing for me. Homeopathic remedies work differently for everyone, so I hope the Calmsforte works for you. Before Calmsforte, I had to get out of bed, do a series of squats, calf raises and one-leg dips on the stairs, and then a series of stretches before I could go back to bed...and then there was no guarantee that my legs wouldn't start up again. I do remember my doctor (UCSF) saying that there was some prescription medication I could take, but I didn't want to go that route since I was pregnant. Good luck! Jill I have had Restless Leg Syndrome for years and finally have a combo of things I use when it is really bothering me.
