Every so often, one of my students works a little too hard, and begins to feel pain in their hands, fingers, arms or shoulders. I take these warning signs very, very seriously. Many of these students may be on a short, hard road to a variety of injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Tendonitis, or other over-use syndromes. These injuries are classified under the term "Repetitive Strain Injuries" by medical professionals. Trust me, you don't EVER want to go through with this. I'd like you to hear Natalka, a former student of mine, explain her experience with RSI. Natalka's problems began once she started university. The root of the problem lay in years of playing with poor posture and body awareness. Here's the story in Natalka's own words:

On this Page: What is RSI of the hand? Who is at risk? Some Numbers What causes RSI? What causes CTS?
What is Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) of the Hand
RSI is a general term for disorders that occur from prolonged, repetitious use of the hands which results in pain, burning, swelling, tingling, numbness, loss of dexterity and weakness. Other synonyms for RSI include: Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD), Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS) and Repetitive Motion Syndrome (RMS). The more specific disorders are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Tendonitis, Tenosynovitis and a host of others. Of course CTS is the most common malady brought on by repetitive hand motion.
Who is at Risk
Those at risk include: computer users, assembly-line workers, stock clerks, warehouse workers, drivers, transcriptionists, garment workers, athletes, meat and poultry processors, painters, writers, gardeners, golfers, carpenters, bank tellers, data entry clerks, accountants, bricklayers, secretaries, construction workers, CAD and graphic designers, programmers, silkscreeners, artists, needlepoint hobbyists, draftsmen, gardeners, crafts enthusiasts, sportsmen, musicians, knitters, crocheters, checkout clerks and anyone else who uses their hands continually or forcefully. In addition, pregnant women and certain other conditions, have a higher risk due to fluid retention.
Some Quick Numbers
By some estimates, about 27 million people have visited a medical professional for RSI of the hand and, perhaps, another 40 million have experienced symptoms but did not seek professional help. According to the

Preventing Repetitive Strain Injuries
Here is a workout a friend sent me to avoid RSI... For those keyboard jockeys (those with jobs that require sitting at a computer all day) that don't want to spend the money for those fancy exercise machines, here is a little secret for building arm and shoulder muscles. Three days a week works well. Begin by standing (in your cubicle works well) with a five pound potato sack in each hand extend your arms straight out to your sides and hold them there as long as you can. After a few weeks, move up to ten pound potato sacks and then fifty pound potato sacks, and finally get to where you can lift a one hundred pound potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.

RSI - The Problem That Need Not Exist!
By Steven D. Price Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) sometimes referred to as Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs), have been around for decades. Long before computer terminals and their keyboards were ever created. They have existed in the industrial environment, where numerous functions require the constant movement of the fingers, with varying degrees of exertion. The wrist RSIs or CTDs that sometimes develop, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, etc. have been continuously studied and usually found not to be caused by what people did, but by how it was done. It was found that people who completed their task with their hand bent to any degree from a straight, hand-in-line to the wrist position, became a prime candidate for an RSI. Unavoidable in some tasks, bending or arching the hand stretches and compresses tendons, ligaments and nerves. Wrist pain is the usual warning at a potential RSI problem exists and task modification or instructions on maintaining a straight, hand in-line to the wrist position where possible, is the accepted preventative measure in the industrial environment. Applying this knowledge to the office environment, it must seriously be considered that using keyboards is

The aim of these notes is not to enable you to self-diagnose, but to make you aware of the various problems so you can recognise the symptoms and take preventative action. Some very important points to note You should use this understanding to help avoid problems and catch possible problems at an early, sub-clinical stage. Prevention is very much better than cure. Self-diagnosis is often very difficult, as problems in the neck can cause pain in the elbow and a back problem regularly manifests itself as pain in the legs. Terminology Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is an umbrella term, a shorthand to refer to various musculo-skeletal injuries which are normally related to some activity. Acronyms If you are into acronyms you can choose from Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD) Work-related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULD) Occupational Overuse Injuries. (OOI) The medical terms include: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common medical diagnosis for those suffering from RSI.

Many children are now using computers at home or school – or both. Few schools or homes provide proper workstations for children; furthermore, people become injured at "ergonomically correct" workstations every day because of improper posture and technique and sheer overuse of the hands. These injuries tend to be chronic and can worsen over time; they can also greatly impede simple activities of daily living such as dressing, driving and opening doors. If you allow your child to use a computer, here are some suggestions for reducing the risk of injury. Bear in mind that because of the interrelationship, complexity and number of risk factors for injury, it is not enough to take half-measures to prevent RSI. The idea of addressing one out of several risk factors "because it's better than nothing" is not helpful because your child could develop a permanent, crippling injury from the risk factors you left out.
  • Reduce overall exposure to computers. Do not purchase video games, which encourage relentless intensive use, for your child. Instead of sending e-mail, children can talk on the telephone or socialize with friends in person. Have them look something up in a book instead of searching the Web. Let them explore Nature and create their own games to play.

    Why Bother?
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) includes numerous injuries due to computer keyboards and pointing devices. These ailments are real injuries, not just minor aches. Five people on our staff are coping with RSI at this writing. My own injury is mouse-related: "DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis", which involves two of the tendons that operate the thumb. It is just the latest of injuries that have travelled over my entire hand/arm/shoulder system during the past several years. They are painful and can really wreck your batting-average, not to mention your career. I foolishly ignored the problem until recently. (Yeah, it's a guy-thing.) An injection of cortisone has greatly relieved the swelling and pain, but it is too early to know the long-term result . If you have a sore hand or wrist, take a look at some of these RSI sites, get the "Repetitive Strain Injury" book by Pascarelli and Quilter (Wiley), then (try to) find a doctor who knows about RSI. (The most numerous complaints on the "SoreHand" bulletin-board are about not being able to find a physician who knows and/or cares about this stuff.)
