Reiter’s syndrome
Definition: Reiter's syndrome is a group of symptoms consisting of arthritis (inflammation of the joints), urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eye), and lesions of the skin and mucous membranes. The cause is unknown.
Alternative Names: Reactive arthritis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The exact cause of Reiter's syndrome is unknown. It occurs most commonly in men before the age of 40. It may follow an infection with Chlamydia , Campylobacter, Salmonella, or Yersinia. There may be a genetic predisposition to the syndrome.
The symptoms of urethritis usually appear within days or weeks of infection followed by a low-grade fever, conjunctivitis, and arthritis developing over the next several weeks. The arthritis may be mild or severe with involvement being asymmetric and in more than one joint.
The risk factors for the syndrome include infection with Chlamydia, Campylobacter, Salmonella, or Yersinia; being male; and possibly, genetic predisposition. The disorder is rare in younger children, but may occur in adolescents.

Story
I have recently been diagnosed as suffering from Reiters Syndrome as the result of a diarrheal illness of unknown origin that I caught in Bangladesh, India or Sri Lanka. Owing to the relative rareness of this disease I am very keen to learn about it and to determine the extent to which I can control the future of it myself. A great deal of useful information is posted on the net but, owing to the low incidence of Reiters in women, I have been able to locate relatively little information describing the experience of women with this disease. Please reply here if you are a woman who can offer me some of your experience of Reiters, the patterns of frequency and severity of recurrences, suitability of various forms of exercise, alternative medical approaches, etc. Last changed: October 20, 2003

Story
I was diagnosed as suffering from Reiter's Syndrome in the summer of 2000. The cause/origin is unknown but it is suspected a bacteria that I came into contact with while living in Asia (Japan). There is relatively little known about the syndrome and most of what is known pertains to European men. I have read the HLA-B27 positive is a precursor to Reiters, except in Blacks (Africans) where HLA-27 negative is a precursor to Reiter's. I am curious to know more about this. Also, if one where mixed EuroAfrican how could the HLA-B27 test help or would it. Beyond how reiters is recognized I am also anxious to hear from anyone who has been living with the syndrome and how or if they have been able to control it. Please reply to me if you are anyone who can share your experience on frequency, severity, coping methods etc.

An infectious cause is suspected, as the disease often follows an infection of the bowel or lower genitourinary tract. Men are affected much more commonly than women, who tend to develop the disease after intestinal disorders, including bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery and shigellosis. The characteristic skin lesion, termed keratoderma blenorrhagicum, affects the palms and soles most frequently. Superficial erythematous ulcerations may also be evident on the buccal mucosa and the tongue. The serum histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 may be present in as many as 75% of patients. Involvement of the lower extremity usually becomes evident initially in the knee and the ankle, followed in descending order of frequency by the metatarsophalangeal joints, the heel, the shoulder, the wrist, the hip and the lumbar spine. Heel pain and tenderness are sometimes initial manifestations of Reiter's syndrome. The arthritic attacks of in this disease are usually self-limiting and of short duration; recurrences are frequent, however. On radiographs the features of joint involvement in Reiter's syndrome are similar to those in the other seronegative spondyloarthropathies and differ from the findings of

Reiter's syndrome is also called "reactive arthritis". It is considered to involve an immune system which is "reacting" to the presence of bacterial infections in the genital, urinary or gastrointestinal systems. For a general description, see Reiters syndrome Reiter's syndrome most frequently occurs in patients in their 30s or 40s, but it can occur at any age. The form of Reiter's syndrome that occurs after genital infection (venereal) occurs more frequently in males. The most common bacterium that has been associated with this post-venereal form of Reiter's syndrome is Chlamydia . Typically, the arthritis develops one to three weeks after the onset of the bacterial infection.

This is one of the screwy ones - you've spelled it like it sounds, but it's actually spelled "Scleroderma", we've got links right here at ArthritisInsight - just go to the Web Links section and look in the "disease specific" section. GREETINGS FROM THE WEBRARY! Last night, during our Featured Chat, one of our Community Members, who happens to be a Pharmacist, mentioned that she'd like to find a device that would make opening and closing medicine bottles with childproof caps easier on the hands. I've found two links for products that claim to do just that and since they really took some digging to find, I thought there might be others out there that would like to take a look at them too. The first one is called a Pill Bottle Opener (okay, I heard that - who's the wise guy that just said "Duh!"?) and it can be found at

What Is Reiter's Syndrome?
Reiter's syndrome is a disorder that causes three seemingly unrelated symptoms: arthritis, redness of the eyes, and urinary tract signs. Doctors sometimes refer to Reiter's syndrome as a seronegative spondyloarthropathy because it is one of a group of disorders that cause inflammation throughout the body, particularly in parts of the spine and at other joints where tendons attach to bones. (Examples of other seronegative spondyloarthropathies include psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and inflammatory bowel syndrome arthritis.) Inflammation is a characteristic reaction of tissues to injury or disease and is marked by four signs: swelling, redness, heat, and pain. Reiters syndrome is also referred to as reactive arthritis, which means that the arthritis occurs as a reaction to an infection that started elsewhere in the body. In many patients, the infection begins in the genitourinary tract (bladder, urethra, penis, or vagina). The infection is most commonly passed from one person to another by sexual intercourse. This form of the disorder is sometimes called genitourinary or urogenital Reiter's syndrome. Another form of the disorder, called enteric or gastrointestinal Reiter's syndrome, develops when a person eats food or handles substances that are tainted with bacteria.
