What is prostatitis?
Prostatitis is common and affects many men at some time. Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. When part of your body is inflamed, it is red, hot and sore. Prostatitis can cause many symptoms. It can make urinating difficult or painful. It can make you have to urinate more often. It can also give you a fever, low-back pain or pain in your groin (the area where the legs meet your body). It may make you less interested in having sex or unable to get an erection or keep it. Prostatitis is easy to confuse with other infections in the urinary tract. Return to top
What is the prostate gland?
The prostate is a gland that lies just below a man's urinary bladder. It surrounds the urethra like a donut and is in front of the rectum. The urethra is the tube that carries urine out of the bladder, through the penis and out of the body. Your doctor may check your prostate by putting a finger into your rectum to feel the back of your prostate gland. The prostate gland makes a fluid that provides nutrients for sperm. This fluid makes up most of the ejaculate fluid. We do not yet know all of the ways the prostate gland works.

This is chronic prostatitis. Numerous small dark blue lymphocytes are seen in the stroma between the glands. There may be a bacterial agent accompanying this inflammation, and cystitis or urethritis may also be present. However, more commonly, chronic prostatitis is abacterial and there is no history of urinary tract infection. The serum prostate specific antigen may be slightly elevated.

M156 updated 5/12/03 CHRONIC PROSTATITIS CAN BE CURED Gabe Mirkin, M.D. Prostate infections are extremely difficult to diagnose and treat because most doctors do not order the right tests and even when they make the correct diagnosis, they often fail to treat the condition long enough or they fail to treat infected partners. SYMPTOMS: Chronic prostatitis is characterized by a feeling of having to urinate all the time, discomfort during urination, terrible discomfort when the bladder is full and having to get up many time each night to urinate. Benign prostatic hypertrophy or large prostate causes difficulty starting stream and dribbling. Prostate cancer rarely causes burning on urination or urgency. Failure to see white blood cells in your secretions does not rule out a prostate infection. Most urologists do not order semen cultures because they claim that they are always contaminated with germs from the skin. Recent studies from Cornell and Mexico City show that they are wrong (2,3). Most men collect semen cultures from the vagina or mouth which always is contaminated. If the patient is asked to shower and clean himself with soap and water, then collect the specimen with his hands and then let it squirt into the culture jar without touching it, the culture is very dependable (2). 1) DA Shoskes, SI Zeitlin. Use of prostatic massage in combination with antibiotics in the treatment of chronic prostatitis. Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, 1999, Vol 2, Iss 3, pp 159-162.

life-threatening disease. Prostate disease may be among the most common problems that men of all ages experience, but a recent poll taken among American men revealed that 11 percent of those who responded had no idea what a prostate was, or if they had one! Over half the men could not name a single symptom they might experience if they had a prostate problem. For younger men, perhaps the most common prostate problem is prostatitis...which simply means inflammation of the prostate gland. It may be very uncomfortable, but prostatitis is not life-threatening and it does not mean that the sufferer has or ever will have prostate cancer. The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut and wraps around the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. When inflammation and swelling occurs, a man may feel the need to urinate more frequently or a sense of urgency to urinate. Urination may be painful, and the urine stream may be weak or interrupted. He may experience pain in the groin area as well as low back pain. If the inflammation is caused by bacteria, symptoms may come on quite suddenly and might also include chills, fever, and blood in the urine. There are several different kinds of prostatitis, including nonbacterial prostatitis the most common form pros-tatodynia, and chronic and acute bacterial prostatitis. Each variety may have similar symptoms, but is unique in its characteris-tics and calls for a physician's diagnosis.

BPH AND PROSTATITIS B enign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, a condition that affects at least 50 percent of American men over age 50. Historically, BPH was treated by an open surgical approach and subsequently by transurethral resection. In the last decade, new pharmacologic methods have replaced surgery in many cases and patients who require more aggressive intervention are now being managed by using energy sources such as laser and transurethral microwave hyperthermia. Stuart Fisher, MD, H. David Leff, MD, James R. Orecklin, MD, and ... Arthur E. Schapiro, MD Two New Treatments for BPH at UCLA We are offering two new treatments for BPHone is Transurethral Microwave Therapy and the other is called Greenlight PVP (photoselective vaporaization of the prostate) The first one is a minimally invasive, office based, procedure without anesthesia for mild to moderate symptoms of BPH either not responsive to medications or in lieu of medications. The second is an anesthetic procedure to replace conventional TURP, with the advantage of almost immediate relief of symptoms, vitually no bleeding and rapid removal of urinary catheters. For more information regarding these new treatments or to make an appointment with Dr Robert Reiter please contact the Urology Appointment Line at Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate that may be caused by an infection and accompanied by chills and fever. Though usually cured with antibiotics the condition can become chronic.

Jock Itch and Prostatitis
Jock Itch Jock Itch is an infection of the groin by the fungus which causes athlete's foot. The fungus is more likely to grow in conditions of increased heat and humidity common among male athletes who wear jock-straps. However, this condition is not limited to male athletes; women can also be infected. Some of the symptoms are burning, itching, and red, scaly lesions. Treatment involves the applications of such medicines such as Micatin, Cruex, Desenex, Lotrimin, or Tinactin until the rash clears; the infection may reoccur if the medication is not applied long enough. In addition, the groin area should be kept dry and clean and absorbent cotton underwear should be worn. Prostatitis Prostatitis is an inflammation or infection of the prostate, the organ between the bladder and the penis through which urine passes and the source of fluid found in semen. Prostatitis may result from a bacterial infection or sexually transmitted disease and is treatable by a course of antibiotics. The symptoms of Prostatitis include burning, discharge, fever, chills, and difficulty urinating.

Prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland, is a term that encompasses four disorders of the prostate: acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis, and prostadynia. Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP), also called chronic abacterial prostatitis (CAP), is the most common form of prostatitis. NBP is usually caused by infectious agents such as fungi, mycoplasma, or viruses. Prostadynia (PD), also called chronic pelvic pain syndrome, is a noninfectious form of prostatitis. Although the cause is unknown, it has been proposed that PD may be a neuromuscular condition, causing pain of the pelvic floor muscles. Acute bacterial prostatitis (ABP) occurs from a urinary tract infection (usually from E. coli
