NIH/National Human Genome Research Institute
Identification of gene gives hope to children with progeria; May shed light on phenomenon of aging
[Boston, MA – April 16, 2003] – The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF), along with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today announced the discovery of the gene that causes Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS or Progeria), a rare, fatal genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. "Isolating the Progeria gene is a major achievement for the medical research community," said Francis Collins, MD, PhD, director, National Human Genome Research Institute and the senior author on the report, which appears today in Nature. "The discovery not only gives hope to children and families affected by Progeria, but also may shed light on the phenomenon of aging and cardiovascular disease." Children with Progeria die from complications of cardiovascular disease or arteriosclerosis at an average age of 13. Researchers now believe finding the gene that causes Progeria may lead to answers surrounding the natural aging process and cardiovascular disease. Heart disease and stroke are the first and third leading causes of death in the United States, accounting for more than 40 percent of all deaths. Within just one year of beginning the research, a group of leading scientists from the PRF Genetics Consortium were able to isolate the Progeria gene. Key aspects of the finding include the fact that Progeria is not inherited and that mutations to the gene LMNA (Lamin A) cause Progeria. The Lamin A protein is the structural scaffolding that holds the nucleus together and has been studied for years. Researchers now believe that the defective Lamin A protein makes the nucleus unstable. That cellular instability leads to the process of premature aging in Progeria.

Progeria: Facing old age is hard – facing it during childhood is unthinkable
Join Discovery Health Channel in understanding an unlikely disease in Progeria: Too young to be old, premiering Tuesday, September 9 at 10 PM ET/PT
Fleur Tobutt was a lot like every other two-year old. She was cute, curious and full of life, but something set her apart from the typical toddler: Fleur had a fatal disease, and her life was destined to be short lived. Little Fleur was one in approximately 30 to 40 children worldwide currently diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Progeria. Children with Progeria are, in spirit, just the same as any other child, but physically, they look like very old men and women and live an average lifespan of only 13 years. Discovery Health Channel features Fleur's story, PROGERIA: TOO YOUNG TO BE OLD, Tuesday, September 9 at 10 PM ET/PT. Progeria is a condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging among children. Although one in eight million are diagnosed at birth, the total incidence is one in four million. Not only do children with Progeria look extremely old, but their bodies are affected by age-related diseases, such as stroke, heart attack and stiffness in joints. Common physical symptoms include dwarfism, baldness, aged skin, a pinched nose, and a small face and jaw relative to the size of the head. Although there is currently no cure for this disease, National Cancer Institute scientists have made remarkable discoveries pertaining to Progeria. In examining an animal model with Progeria, scientists noticed a specific mutation in the Lamin A gene, which seems to account for Progeria symptoms. This new research brings scientists closer to some day finding a cure for this disease and offers hope to those living with it.

"If we crash, I can't win!" Good ol' Speed. Forever stating the obvious in his trademark excitable tone. Speaking of which, this book is perfect for "Speed Racer" fans to get excited about.
Author Elizabeth Moran hits the track with infectious enthusiasm and leaves in her backdraft plenty of fun info on all the various iterations of "Speed Racer," from the original manga and Japanese series to the imported version I grew up with... to the newer versions, including a proposed live action film that never got off the ground. Moran includes the requisite episode guides (and rates them!), plus interviews with both the Japanese and American creative teams, racing terms, a complete dictionary guide to Speed's world and transcripts from the ESPN "Nascar" commercials. And wait until you read the original Japanese lyrics to the now-classic theme. Yep, even master auto-designer Pops Racer couldn't have done a better job, because this book has more features than the Mach 5!
What's especially neat about this is that it's all in glorious full-color! The design matches the vibrant and vigorous animated series. A fun package, and highly recommended for any "Speed Racer" fan. Go, Speed Racer, go!

SITUATION
Since its inception, PRF has developed groundbreaking initiatives that seek to find explanations to the many unanswered questions surrounding this syndrome and has funded basic science research aimed at discovering the biological basis of disease in Progeria. The Foundation formed the PRF Genetic Consortium which was established to work hand-in-hand with the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to find the gene responsible for Progeria. Within just one year of beginning the research, a group of leading scientists from the PRF Genetics Consortium was able to identify the gene that causes Progeria. This discovery was not only a major breakthrough for those suffering from Progeria, but also for the medical and scientific communities. The gene discovery possessed a strong inclination to drawing major media attention on both a national and international level. The Foundation approached Spectrum to assist in maximizing awareness of Progeria and leveraging the profile of PRF surrounding the publication of the gene study in Nature
