The word is derived from the Latin word senex , meaing "old man" or "old age." Cellular senescence is a phenomena where isolated cells demonstrate a limited ability to divide in culture. Organismal senescence is the aging of organisms. Organismal aging is generally characterized by the declining ability to respond to stress, increasing homeostatic imbalance and increased risk of disease. Because of this, death is the ultimate consequence of aging.

Progeria
Progeria is an extremely rare genetic condition which causes physical changes that resemble greatly accelerated aging in sufferers. It is an autosomal recessive condition and effects around 1 in 8 million newborns. The condition was first identified in by Jonathan Hutchinson and Hastings Gilford. The condition was later named Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria syndrome , the name was derived from the Greek for "prematurely old". Around 100 cases have been definitely identified since then. The condition is distinguished by limited growth, alopecia and a characteristic appearance with small face and jaw and pinched nose. Later the condition causes wrinkled skin, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular problems. Mental development is unaffected. Individuals with the condition rarely live more than 16 years, the longest recorded life-span is 21 years. The development of symptoms is comparable to aging at a rate six to eight times faster than normal, although certain age related conditions do not occur. Compare: Werner syndrome

Progeria is a rare genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. Its name is derived from the Greek and means "prematurely old." The classic type is the Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome which was first described in England in 1886 by Dr. Jonathan Hutchinson and again in 1886 and 1904 by Dr. Hastings Gilford. HOW COMMON IS PROGERIA?
The classic syndrome has a reported incidence of about 1 in 8 million newborns, and the total incidence is estimated to be about 1 in 4 million. It affects both sexes equally and all races. Since first described, more than 100 cases have been identified around the world. In this decade, children with progeria have been reported in Algeria, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South America, Switzerland, Turkey, the United States, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
