This syndrome was first recognized by Mesulam in 1982. We report a 72-year-old male patient whose motor aphasia started at the age of 70 years. Magnetic resonance imaging showed left frontotemporal atrophy and single photon emission tomography showed hypoperfusion bilatheral frontal and pariototemporal lobes, more marked in the left. The clinical symptoms and the neuroimaging findings fit the diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia. But neuropathological investigations should be made for differential diagnosis. TELEROUNDS "Primary Progressive Aphasia" Presenter: Andrew Kertesz, M.D., FRCPC Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a relatively common syndrome of degenerative dementia. It is defined as a slowly progressive language disturbance that is relatively isolated from other cognitive deficits for at least two years. In the end-stage, mutism often develops, frontal behavioral changes, extra-pyramidal deficits, and occasionally amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, may be superimposed. The pathology is often Pick's disease or related non-Alzheimer's pathology described as "Pick complex." Most PPAs begin with anomia but eventually become nonfluent. Occasionally a fluent type of aphasia develops with "semantic dementia." Email Address: DWil13@ix.netcom.com Howdy! Hey, wondered if you folks could help my mother with some information. She has just been diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia. Her words are mixed up, and she can't write like she used to, and this has been going on for about a year now. She was an English/Drama teacher for years, so it is very frustrating for her not to be able to be accurate with her spoken and written English. Her neuroligist told my sister that there is a medication which is used by Alzhimers patients that may benefit her. I can't recall the name of the medication. Also, her mother, my grandmother, had Huntingtons Chorea, and died of the complications of that disease. I can't help but think that there may be some conection between the two. My mother will be 65 in July, my grandmother was 59 when diagnosed with Huntingtons, and 71 when she died. Any advice and or information would be tremendously appreciated. My mother is on Web TV, and once I get more information, I will try to get her to post her herself.

Her memory and speech are affected. She has had this for about 1.5 years and is getting noticeably worse. If you know anyone that has any research or know if any medical facility is doing research or developing medicine for this I would appreciate you contacting me via e-mail. She has gone to Duke University and has had some tests done. Her Dr. there is Dr. Burke. He indicates that there are only about 1,000 people known to have this and that he doesn't know of anyone doing research. We need help if it's out there.
