Primary Immune Deficiency WHAT IS PRIMARY IMMUNE DEFICIENCY?

Primary care doctors who suspect a patient has a problem with the immune system will run screening tests. If those tests indicate the person's immune system is not functioning normally, the doctor will consult with a special kind of doctor called a clinical immunologist. The immunologist can run special blood tests to find out the exact type of PI disease and how best to treat it. Other experts the doctor may consult include pulmonologists, rheumatologists, gastroenterologists, and hematologists. In this article, we discuss only a few PI diseases. Selective IgA Defficiency Approximately one out of every 600 people have selective IgA deficiency. Among those with this PI, people of European ancestry greatly outnumber those of other ethnic groups. People with this deficiency lack immunoglobulin A (IgA), a type of antibody that protects against infections of the mucous membranes lining the mouth, airways, and digestive tract.

About Primary Immune Deficiencies
What is a Primary Immune Deficiency Disease? Primary immune deficiency diseases are disorders in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly. In contrast to secondary immune deficiency disease in which the immune system is compromised by factors outside the immune system, such as viruses or chemotherapy, the primary immune deficiency diseases are caused by intrinsic or genetic defects in the immune system. There are a wide variety of primary immune deficiencies. The World Health Organization recognizes nearly 100 primary immune deficiency disease including X-linked Agammaglobulinemia (Bruton's Disease), Common Variable Immune Deficiency, Selective IgA Deficiency, and Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (boy-in-the-bubble disease). Some disorders, such as Selective IgA Deficiency can be quite common, occurring as often as 1/500 to 1/1000 individuals. Others, such as Severe Combined Immune Deficiency, may be as rare as one individual affected per million. Untreated primary immune deficiencies may be characterized by frequent life-threatening infections and debilitating illnesses. Because of advances in our medical understanding and treatment of primary immune deficiency diseases, individuals who in the past would not have survived childhood are now able to live nearly normal lives. Many individuals affected by primary immune deficiency diseases require life long therapies including intravenous gamma globulin infusions, antibiotic therapies, or bone marrow transplantation. The Immune Deficiency Foundation is dedicated to improving the diagnosis and treatment of primary immune deficiency diseases through research and education.

PRIMARY IMMUNE DEFICIENCY DISEASES IN AMERICA:
The First National Survey of Patients and Specialists

Primary immune deficiency diseases represent a class of disorders in which there is an intrinsic defect in the human immune system (as distinct from immune disorder that are secondary to infection, chemotherapy, or some other external agent). In some cases, the body fails to produce any or enough antibodies to fight infection. In other cases, the cellular defenses against infection fail to work properly. The first medical recognition of primary immune deficiency diseases was only fifty years ago. Today, the World Health Organization recognizes more than 80 different primary immune deficiency diseases.
Although primary immune deficiency diseases are often described as rare disorders, the true population prevalence of these diseases, either individually or collectively, is not well established. The major health surveys conducted by the U.S. government, the National Health Interview Survey and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, do not collect information on primary immune deficiency diseases. No national population survey has ever been undertaken in the United States to estimate the prevalence or the population characteristics of the disease. Hence, although the diseases are clinically described in the medical literature, there is no comprehensive portrait available of the patient with primary immune deficiency diseases.

Immune Disorders
The human immune system serves as a defense mechanism, protecting the body from many potentially damaging substances such as cancer cells, blood or tissues from another person, microorganisms, or toxins. In individuals with immune deficiency disorders, their immune system is absent or is functioning incorrectly. Immune disorders can be inborn (where the individual is born with a malfunctioning immune system), or be the result of a virus, or chemotherapy. There are a wide variety of immunodeficiency disorders that affect millions of men, women, and children worldwide. Some common immunodeficiency disorders treated with immunologic products are: Primary Immune Deficiency Primary immune deficiency is a disorder in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly. It is caused by congenital defects in the immune system. The variety of primary immune deficiencies include X-linked Agammaglobulinemia (Bruton's Disease), Common Variable Immune Deficiency (also called Hypogammaglobulinemia), Selective IgA Deficiency, and Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (boy-in-the-bubble disease).
