Obese Women and Pregnancy Complications
Obese and Morbidly Obese Women More Likely To Have Pregnancy Complications and C-Sections NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia Leads Largest Study of Its Kind New York, NY (May 12, 2004) (HealthNewsDigest.com)... Obese and morbidly obese women are more likely to have pregnancy complications and caesarean sections than women of average weight, according to a new study by physician-scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and published in the April American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The controlled study is one of the largest ever to look at obesity in pregnancy, following more than 16,000 pregnant women at 14 medical centers across the country. Compared with women of normal weight, obese and morbidly obese pregnant women were at greater risk for gestational hypertension (2.5x and 3.2x, respectively), preeclampsia (1.6x and 3.3x), gestational diabetes (2.6x and 4.0x), fetal birth weight greater than 4,000 grams (1.7x and 1.9x), and fetal birth weight greater than 4,500 grams (2.0x and 2.4x), the study finds.

Sidelines provides nationwide support for women and their families experiencing complicated pregnancies. A pregnancy is termed "high risk" or "complicated" when the life or health of the mother or baby may be at risk. It is estimated that approximately 1 out of every 4 women will experience pregnancy complications this year, sometimes leading to the birth of a premature baby. When babies are born preterm, they have a higher risk for serious health problems. We believe that families can cope more successfully with a high-risk pregnancy with appropriate medical intervention, education, and a strong support system. When you find yourself on the sidelines, we're here to help.

Pregnancy Complications
Gestational Diabetes
One of the most common complications or conditions of pregnancy is Gestational Diabetes . Most pregnant women are tested for Gestational Diabetes around the 26th week of pregnancy. If one has a family history of diabetes they are at greater risk of getting Gestational Diabetes. If one tests positive for Gestational Diabetes, a strict diet will be prescribed and close observation is necessary during the pregnancy.
Group B Strep (GBS)
Group B Strep (GBS) is not a pregnancy complication or condition that is harmful to most people. However, during pregnancy it can cause complications and endanger the lives of newborn babies. Group B Strep (streptococcus) lives in the gastrointestinal tract of men and women under normal circumstances. At intermittent times it can move from the intestinal tract to the vagina of a woman during pregnancy, or at any time for that matter, and cause a newborn baby to become ill with a bacterial infection caused by Group B Step (GBS). An infant is at risk until approximately three months of age. A woman who is in labor and about to deliver is usually swabbed to see if the bacteria is present in the vagina at the time of delivery. If it is present, antibiotics will be given to the mother and the baby at birth.

Complications of Pregnancy
What are some of the more common complications of pregnancy?
Although the majority of pregnancies are uneventful, sometimes complications do occur. The following are some of the more common pregnancy complications: amniotic fluid complications
Too much or too little amniotic fluid in the membranes surrounding the fetus may indicate a problem with the pregnancy. Too much fluid can put excessive pressure on the mother's uterus, leading to preterm labor, or can cause pressure on the mother's diaphragm leading to breathing difficulties. Fluids tend to build up in cases of uncontrolled diabetes, multiple pregnancy, incompatible blood types, or birth defects. Too little fluid may indicate birth defects, growth retardation, or stillbirth. bleeding
Bleeding in late pregnancy may be a sign of placental complications or a vaginal or cervical infection. Women who bleed in late pregnancy may be at greater risk of losing the fetus and hemorrhaging (bleeding excessively). Bleeding at any time during the pregnancy should be reported to your physician immediately. ectopic pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy is the development of the fetus outside of the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy can occur in the fallopian tubes, cervical canal, or the pelvic or abdominal cavity. The cause of an ectopic pregnancy is usually a blocked fallopian tube. This type of pregnancy can never produce a live baby because of its position outside the uterus (a womb).
