On April 10, 2003 I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl via emergency c/sec at 34 wks. We named our 3rd child Chloe Fayth. She was 3 lbs, 11 oz. Due to complications from congenital CMV and an eventration in her diaghram she was in the NICU for 10 weeks. She came home on oxygen and a feeding tube. We enjoyed her at home for 4 glorious weeks before she was admitted to Children's Menical center for further evaluation. Her condition quickly got worse and she ended up on a ventalator needing a lung transplant. After a week of arresting on a daily basis, her little body had decided it had had enough and she moved on to bigger and better things.

Now as her first birthday approaches, I thought I should finally get around to typing up her birth account. I discovered I was pregnant just after Ann Kelly was injuncted, and kept hearing that it was impossible to get a midwife unless you booked before six weeks. Panicked, I rang every one on the HBA's list - I wouldn't even contemplate the thought of a hospital birth. In the meantime I arranged ante-natal care with my GP, who unbeknownst to me until I declared my intentions and waited for the fallout, had his second child born at home. I ended up sharing my care with him all the way through. Thankfully, Kate Spillane eventually called us back and I will always be grateful to whatever power brought us together. The pregnancy was un-stressed and visits from Kate involved Donald as well. Apart from a few 'is it safe?' or 'you're very brave' comments, most people were supportive of our decision to have a home birth. My mother, who had had such a horrendous experience when I was born in hospital, was delighted I wouldn't have to go through what she had. Friends who'd had negative experiences in hospital were envious. Talking to other parents at home birth meetings helped us feel 'normal'.

In the fetus, the kidneys produce urine, which becomes the amniotic fluid around the baby. Potter syndrome occurs when the fetus does not have kidneys, thus, there is no amniotic fluid. This results in a compression of the baby in the womb, which causes the underdevelopment of the lungs.  What causes potter syndrome? The cause is not known. There might be a genetic link, as it appears to reoccur in some families. How do we diagnose potter syndrome? Potter syndrome is suspected in a fetus with no/low amniotic fluid. A sonogram may prove the absence of kidneys. Because the fetus uses the placenta to "breathe", it can often develop somewhat normally. After birth, the babies do not have the placenta for gas exchange and have severe respiratory distress due to lung underdevelopment. The findings on the physical exam are often obvious.  An x-ray or ultrasound can be used to prove the diagnosis.
