Question Reformulated
A number of issues around the question required clarification:
  • The diagnosis of PTSD revolves around a collection of symptoms, some or all of which may be present in people thought to be suffering from the condition, which has implications for the interpretation and applicability of research on the effectiveness of any potential treatments. Individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD have different combinations of symptoms that are troublesome, therefore specific treatments cannot be viewed in isolation and care packages need to be tailored to the individual.

There is one place in which one's privacy, intimacy, integrity and inviolability are guaranteed – one's body, a unique temple and a familiar territory of sensa and personal history. The torturer invades, defiles and desecrates this shrine. He does so publicly, deliberately, repeatedly and, often, sadistically and sexually, with undisguised pleasure. Hence the all-pervasive, long-lasting, and, frequently, irreversible effects and outcomes of torture. In a way, the torture victim's own body is rendered his worse enemy. It is corporeal agony that compels the sufferer to mutate, his identity to fragment, his ideals and principles to crumble. The body becomes an accomplice of the tormentor, an uninterruptible channel of communication, a treasonous, poisoned territory. It fosters a humiliating dependency of the abused on the perpetrator. Bodily needs denied – sleep, toilet, food, water – are wrongly perceived by the victim as the direct causes of his degradation and dehumanization. As he sees it, he is rendered bestial not by the sadistic bullies around him but by his own flesh.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - What are the Treatments?
Q. Can Post Traumatic Stress Disorder be prevented?
A. The answer to this question is not clear. It was thought that Psychological Debriefing might prevent PTSD but this is probably not the case. The causes of PTSD are complex and it would be simplistic to think that a short series of interventions, however well received, would prevent PTSD in an "at risk" individual. It is natural that people have reactions to traumatic events - these cannot be avoided. However, it is clear that unavoidable distress can be minimised by crisis intervention techniques such as Critical Incident Stress Management .Such interventions set up a support network in the workplace for the early detection of PTSD and prompt treatment. Q. Is there a test for PTSD that I could give so that I can know who needs help?
A.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
An audit of the first 90 cases of PTSD treated with the cognitive therapy programme showed improvement rates identical to those obtained in the research trials. Partly as a consequence of these findings, the Northern Ireland Office in collaboration with the Omagh Victims Fund and Omagh District Council have provided funding to create a Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation, that will offer cognitive therapy to a wide range of trauma victims and train other professionals in the new techniques. In contrast to the positive results obtained with individualised cognitive therapy, a controlled evaluation of debriefing 24 hours after major road traffic accidents indicated that this commonly used procedure retards natural recovery. To date most studies of PTSD have focused on adults. However, two studies from the IoP suggest that persistent PTSD is also a substantial problem in children and adolescents who have been exposed to traumatic events. One of the factors influencing the severity of PTSD in children appears to be the severity of parents' reactions, suggesting the need for co-ordinated treatment of adults and children.

Change your beliefs.... Change your life... even in a single session! This is real! Healing at the DNA level. Marlana Lytehaause, MSW, DCH Master of Social Work, Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy Our emotions are how we experience every day life. If we worry about tomorrow, life seems scary and tense. If we regret past mistakes, life seems dark and depressing. We are a collection of beliefs, thought patterns and even myths and illusions. What if you could change those scary or depressing feelings just by being willing to let them go. What if you had a magic wand you could wave and feel better with every wave. We now know that our DNA is responsible for much more than the color of our eyes and hair. Our DNA is where we carry our beliefs or "programs". What is even more fascinating is that we collect these "programs" on four levels:
  • Core: This life time.

" POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
A Police Officer's report"
I have written a book about my personal experiences serving as a Police Officer and my involvement in the shooting of a barricaded gunman and the emotional issues which followed including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. My desire is to help other officers understand that they are not alone with the feelings of isolation and depression that can come from a critical incidence and the possibility of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. My book explains the healing process I went through as well as experiencing the lack of understanding and knowledge on the cities part. A must for any police officer and others including; Senior officers as well as officers starting their career. Non-police officers in understanding what can go on in the mind of the officers involved.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD)
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is not a disorder to be associated solely with military personnel, as it has been in the past. It has been shown that exposure to traumas such as a serious accident, a natural disaster, or criminal assault can result in PTSD. When the aftermath of a traumatic experience interferes with normal functioning, the person may be suffering from PTSD. The increasing stress of living in the 21st century, on both a global and personal level, has been sufficient to considerably elevate the numbers of people who suffer from PTSD. Fast Facts About PTSD
  • 5.2 million Americans ages 18-54 are diagnosed with PTSD. PTSD can develop after an individual experiences a traumatic event such as sexual or physical assault, witnessing a death, the unexpected death of a loved one, natural disaster or a terrorist attack.

What is Trauma Recovery?
Trauma has been described as a profound deviation from normal life experience. Trauma may occur in childhood; when it can actually reprogram the neurological pathways. This impacts normal emotional functioning later in life. (Many adults traumatized as children develop multiple addictions, PTSD, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, or other dissociative disorders later in life.) Adults experience trauma in the form of catastrophic natural or life events, assault and rape, loss of a significant person, abusive relationships, POW experiences, occupational trauma from military / police work, violent crime, exposure to violence, and other severe stresses. Trauma can produce Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the survivor. Ongoing stress will produce PTSD in children later in life, adults generally only develop PTSD in response to specific traumatic events or a series of traumatic events. Symptoms of PTSD include hyper vigilance, free floating anxiety (dysphoria), hyper startle, hyper arousal (being "on guard" all the time), etc. People naturally develop coping mechanisms when they have been traumatized.

This disorder, as the name implies, develops in connection with some type of personal trauma. Rape, earthquakes, an airplane accident or war are just some examples of incidents that may provoke the development of PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder affects thousands of Americans; approximately 10% of the population, who have survived traumatic situations. Not all survivors, however, will develop the symptoms or suffer from the disorder. PTSD usually surfaces within three months of the traumatic experience, though in some cases the disorder can take years to appear. Symptoms of the disorder are split into four categories: intrusive symptoms, avoidant symptoms, hyperarousal symptoms and associative features.
