David Kinchin's reassuring and sensitively-written book validates, explains and relieves the silent unseen suffering of trauma.
"Most people will survive a major trauma but many do not believe this.
David Kinchin's compassionate and informative contribution will help them."
Suzanna Rose, Institute of Psychiatry Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a natural emotional reaction to a deeply shocking and disturbing experience. A former sufferer of PTSD, David Kinchin tells his story and those of ten others. He describes in plain language what it is like to suffer from PTSD and explains all the complications the disorder can include. The causes of PTSD range from a single major life-threatening incident (eg war, act of violence, accident, disaster, etc) to a prolonged series of events (eg bullying, harassment, abuse, living with a violent partner, etc).

What is post traumatic stress disorder?
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has many origins. Symptoms are identified and recoveries are listed for the reader's benefit.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is defined by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-IV (DSM-IV)as an overwhelming response to an extreme event or series of events that occurred at least more than 1 month prior to the onset of symptoms. The event itself does not qualify a person for PTSD. An earthquake, a war, sexual/physical/emotional abuse, a devastating fire, a rape, a stock market crash and accidents of all kinds can be the precipitating factors to the development of symptoms. Moreover, as also can be noted, the duration of the trauma does not determine whether or not a diagnosis is made. Some traumas are of a one-time occurrence; others are chronic and pervasive. bodyOffer(27914) Symptoms of PTSD include the recurrent and intrusive distressing recollections of the event; recurrent nightmares of the event; intense psychological distress at exposure to internal or external triggers that symbolize or resemble an aspect of the trauma; avoidance of thoughts, feelings, or conversations associated with the event; avoidance of activities, places, or people that arouse recollections of the trauma; inability to recall an important aspect of the event; markedly diminished interest in important activities; a restricted range of feeling or estrangement from others; a sense of a foreshortened future; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; irritability or outbursts of anger; difficulty concentrating; hypervigilance and an exaggerated startle response. Not all of the symptoms must be present; however, what symptoms there are must be connected to the trauma experienced.

(Expanded version of an article first published in the November 1995 issue of For the Defense , the monthly journal of the Defense Research Institute, Chicago, Illinois.) In prehistoric times, when our earliest ancestors lived in dread of their mortal enemy, the saber-toothed tiger, those cave men (and women) who were fortunate enough to be genetically endowed with the quickest "fight or flight" reactions survived, and became our ancestors. That's where the story begins... a story which flourishes today in a medical-legal climate where Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) claims comprise a substantial and costly portion of personal injury and employment litigation....
Introduction
Among the various psychiatric diagnoses found in psychological injury claims, the major stress diagnosis, PTSD, is one of the most highly compensated. Consequently, in recent years natural disasters (such as earthquakes, floods or fires) or man-made disasters (such as airplane crashes, industrial accidents, assault, rape) as well as workplace allegations of discrimination, abuse or sexual harassment, have generated a rising tide of psychological damage claims with allegations of PTSD. As a result, in order to properly manage these claims, both defense counsel and insurance claims adjusters require a sophisticated and detailed understanding of the psychiatric diagnosis of PTSD: what it is, and possibly more importantly what it is not.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder:
Identification and Diagnosis
Invited article for Soziale Arbeit Schweiz
(The Swiss Journal of Social Work), February 1998. By Babette Rothschild, MSW, LCSW Member:
International and European Societies for Traumatic Stress Studies
National Association of Social Workers (USA) Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) disrupts the functioning of those afflicted by it, interfering with the ability to meet their daily needs and perform the most basic tasks. Trauma continues to intrude on the lives of people with PTSD as they relive the life-threatening experiences they have suffered with visual, auditory and/or somatic reality, reacting in mind and body as though such events were still occurring. Not everyone experiencing traumatic events develops PTSD; it is a complex psychobiological condition that can emerge in the wake of life-threatening experiences when normal psychological and somatic stress responses to a traumatic event are not resolved and released. In this paper it is proposed that Autonomic Nervous System hyperarousal is at the core of PTSD and the driving force behind phenomena such as dissociation, freezing and flashbacks. Acute traumatic reactions are differentiated from PTSD and strategies for intervention are suggested. INTRODUCTION Events that are threatening to life or bodily integrity will produce traumatic stress in its victim. This is a normal, adaptive response of the mind and body to protect the individual by preparing him to respond to the the threat by fighting or fleeing. If the fight or flight is successful, the traumatic stress will usually be released or dissipated allowing the victim to return to a normal level of functioning. PTSD develops: when fight or flight is not possible; the threat persists over a long period of time; and/or the threat is so extreme that the instinctive response of the victim is to freeze.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
pdf version
Difficult situations are part of life. We all must cope with tough circumstances, such as bereavement or conflict in our personal and professional relationships, and learn to move on. But sometimes people experience an event which is so unexpected and so shattering that it continues to have a serious effect on them, long after any physical danger involved has passed. Individuals with this kind of experience may suffer flashbacks and nightmares, in which they re-live the situation that caused them intense fear and horror. They may become emotionally numb. When this condition persists for over a month, it is diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of several conditions known as an anxiety disorder. This kind of medical disorder affects approximately 1 in 10 people. They are among the most common of mental health problems. Children and adults can develop PTSD. The disorder can become so severe that that the individual finds it difficult to lead a normal life. Fortunately, treatments exist to help people with PTSD bring their lives back into balance.

P ost traumatic stress disorder, or "shell shock" as it was originally called, is a psychiatric disorder that was officially recognized after being observed in war veterans. The phenomenon has now been studied and better defined. A Definition of PTSD A person suffering with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been exposed directly to a traumatic event. This is an essential ingredient in PTSD. A traumatic event is one that is not considered usual in normal life. Generally, the traumatic event will involve an individual experiencing a close encounter with their own death, or it will involve observance of the unexpected or horrific death of others. Who is at risk?
