Now researchers are learning that it also has far-reaching effects on a woman's overall health. This hormonal disorder affects about 6 percent of premenopausal women, and its repercussions probably echo throughout life. During the reproductive years, the most common symptom of PCOS is irregular or infrequent menstrual periods. Other signs include prominent facial or body hair, severe acne, thinning hair on the head, and obesity. The disease gets its name from the many small cysts that build up inside the ovaries. Many therapies target specific symptoms of PCOS, but may not address the underlying cause. Treatments
Oral contraceptives. Traditionally, physicians have prescribed oral contraceptives (birth control pills) to regulate menstrual periods in women with PCOS. Oral contraceptives contain a combination of hormones (estrogen and progesterone). Used properly, oral contraceptives can assure that women menstruate every four weeks. Because they cause women to menstruate regularly (and, thus, shed the endometrial lining), oral contraceptives as treatment for PCOS help to reduce a woman's risk of endometrial cancer. Anti-androgens. Anti-androgenic agents, such as spironolactone, block the effect of androgens (male hormones, including testosterone). In high doses, anti-androgens can reduce unwanted hair growth and acne.

The only thing that I have found that works, after having it for 20 LONG years, is exercise...20 years ago, they told me that I'd either have to go on the pill (back then, it gave me migraines) or exercise...I chose exercise...and it worked, I don't mean lifting weights, I mean serious aerobic exercise, but it made my cysts go away for years! Really, it does work and as far as I know, it is the only thing that really does work...

Apropos < (ha, ha...spelling, anyone? this doesn't look right...) I was "diagnosed" by a doctor three years ago as having PCOS, but the only thing with me is that I just tend to not get my period for a very, very long time if I am no on the pill. I once waited seven months! So I was wondering (bsides exercise) if there is something I can do that will help regulate my cycle.
I am currently on Ortho Evra, the bc Patch, since pills turn me into a raving, unstable lunatic. While I will not find out until month number three if I can tolerate it or not (the usual time it takes me to find out with the Pill), I would rather just like to regulate my period the natural way and not by sticking hormones to my skin.

What is PCOS?
PCOS stands for PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome, a.k.a. Polycystic Ovary Disease and Stein-Leventhal Syndrome (after the team that identified it). PCOS can be treated, but not cured. Although this medical condition has been known by the medical field for many years, it hasn't received much exposure. Some medical experts believe as much as 10 percent of women are affected by PCOS. Women who think they may have PCOS are urged to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. In the 3FC Guide to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, we hope to provide the necessary information and resources to help you with this battle. General Information
Some sections may seem very technical as this is a complex disorder Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a set of clinical findings and not a disease itself. There are many abnormalities which may collectively produce the findings which characterize PCOS. Originally the syndrome was termed Stein-Leventhal Syndrome after the investigators who published papers on the clinical findings in 1935. With the advent and availability of ultrasound, the term polycystic ovaries became more common. This name refers to the characteristic ultrasound appearance of the ovaries. Due to abnormal follicular development, the ovaries have multiple small follicles usually measuring <5mm dispersed around the periphery of the ovary in a pattern often referred to as a "string of pearls".

Basic Information

Description
Ovary enlargement from many small cysts. The hormonal regulation of the ovary malfunctions resulting in a reduction or absence of ovulation (the monthly release of the egg from the ovary). Women with this problem are often infertile.
Frequent Signs and Symptoms
  • Irregular menstrual bleeding resulting in periods of light flow along with heavy flow.
  • Increased time between periods, often up to several months.
  • Increased hair growth on the face, arms, legs and from pubic area to navel.
  • Higher energy level.
  • Obesity.
  • Acne.
Causes
An imbalance between the pituitary gonadotropin luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), resulting in a lack of ovulation and an increased testosterone production.
Risk Increases With
  • Endometrial hypoplasia or carcinoma.
  • Obesity.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Diabetes mellitus.
  • Breast cancer.
Preventive Measures
Cannot be prevented at present. Women should receive appropriate cancer screening tests to reduce the risk factors of uterine cancer and breast cancer.
Expected Outcome
Hormone therapy can be used to decrease masculine characteristics and other hormonal therapy can be used to restore fertility. Some signs and symptoms may never disappear completely.

Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOS)
Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a metabolic disorder that affects the female reproductive system. The key characteristics include irregular menstruation, obesity, infertility, acne and hair growth on the face, chest, and back (hirsutism). Polycystic means "many cysts," and the ovaries in women with PCOS are usually large and full of cysts, although they may not have symptoms. About 6% to 10% of women have PCOS. To be diagnosed with PCOS, a woman must have at least one of the clinical signs mentioned above. Many women with PCOS are insulin resistant and overweight or obese and some may have Type 2 diabetes. Women who have PCOS have a hormonal imbalance. Their ovaries and adrenal glands produce more androgens, specifically testerone, and often less estrogen and progesterone than normal. This imbalance causes many of the symptoms. Cysts develop in the follicles where the ovary produces eggs. As many as a dozen cysts may occur at once and eventually may damage the follicle. This is the cause of the infertility.

  • History . Menstrual irregularities usually of teenage onset (patients often state that they never have had regular menses), hirsutism, acne, family history of PCOS (50% chance of first-degree female relatives being affected), or type II diabetes.
  • Physical . The traditional description of the patient with PCOS is an obese female with acne and excess body hair. However, not all women with PCOS have these manifestations and those with PCOS may be thin with a fair complexion. Patients may have palpably enlarged ovaries. Virilization is uncommon (deepened voice, etc.)
