4.1 What is the connection between insulin resistance and PCOS?
At least 30 percent of women with PCOS are insulin resistant, although some investigators claim a much stronger association exists. Hyperinsulinemia produces hyperandrogenism by stimulating ovarian androgen production and by reducing serum sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG). This can heighten PCOS symptoms. Reducing insulin resistance through the use of insulin-sensitizing medications can restore ovulatory function in many women with PCOS. It appears that even some patients who do not test as being insulin resistant may benefit from these medications. TOP

What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (also referred to as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, polycystic ovarian disease or hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation) is an endocrine disorder found in 5%-10% women. It can cause a myriad of symptoms that appear, on the surface, to be unrelated, including:
  • irregular or absent periods lack of ovulation weight gain (particularly around the waist - the "apple" shape as opposed to the "pear" or "hourglass" shape which is more typical for women) hirsutism (excess body hair) which tends to worsen over time insulin resistance (now thought to be a cause rather than a symptom, more on this later). When insulin resistance is found along with high blood pressure, high triclyceride levels, decreased HDL (good cholesterol) and obesity, it is sometimes termed "Syndrome X". acne male-pattern balding multiple small cysts on the ovaries acanthosis nigrans (darkening of the skin under the arms and breasts and at the nape of the neck)

Hair Balding and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Frederick R. Jelovsek MD
"Could you please give more information on polycystic ovarian syndrome? I want to become pregnant but of course I am starting to bald. Everything I read states I better get treatment before it really goes bad. Neither my parents nor any of my 3 older brothers are balding in the crown area, so may I ask where on what side of genetics does this come from? My primary MD answers that it is probably my (testosterone) level which is 102. Background: I am 34, irregular menses after off of the BCP after 9 years and never had a problem with periods prior. I started back on BCPs due to balding. I have been off BCPs for 14 months only. My basic question is... how have I inherited the PCOS and the baldness".
anonymous Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is often considered a symptom rather than a disease. In other words, many conditions that inhibit ovulation can cause the ovaries to appear polycystic and to secrete more androgens (testosterone) than normal. On the other hand, this condition often seems to run in families so it must represent a specific genetic disease in some instances. Suffice it to say that PCOS may have multiple causes, and at least sometimes there is a genetic inherited cause, but not always. PCOS, originally described under the name of Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is often associated with excess body hair growth (hirsutism), obesity, non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure. Current concepts are that the obesity is either a cause or a result of

A couple of announcements!
  • I know this site has been neglected and getting out of date; this is because I've been working 70+ hours a week for a long time now. I plan to make updates when I can and get the site back in order. The contact link has been taken down because it's come to my attention that the form has been broken for an embarrassingly long time. Lastly, along with updating the site, I plan to move it to my own domain, where there will be no dang ads anymore. Please check back - I won't take the site down here, but there will be a link to site's new home once it's moved and from that point on all updates will take place at the new site.

You Are Not Alone! Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex endocrine disturbance found in 5 - 30% of the world's female population. First diagnosed in 1935 as Stein - Levinthal Syndrome, it is one of the most common causes of
infertility, and yet it still is misdiagnosed in most cases.
The symptoms of PCOS vary within each individual, but common complaints include: irregular menstrual periods, male pattern baldness, obesity or unexplained weight gain, excessive facial and/or body hair, insulin resistance and infertility. Women who have PCOS have an increased risk of adult onset diabetes, hypertension, early onset heart disease, cancers of the reproductive organs, and a higher chance of miscarriage and infertility. Though there is currently no cure for this disorder, it can be controlled to an extent with certain medications and a proper diet.
I want to add my name to the list of "cysters" out there on the web, those who know what they are dealing with, and those who are just now discovering what their bodies have been telling them all along. Just knowing that what I am facing has been dealt with for decades, gives me the strength and courage to make it through another day. Thank you all! We are angels with but one wing, and to fly we must embrace each other.

This condition is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, scanty or absent menses , multiple small cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovaries), mild hirsutism (excessive hair), and infertility . Many women who have this condition also have diabetes with insulin resistance. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Abnormal ovarian function sometimes causes incompletely-developed follicles (ova) to accumulate in the ovaries. These ova fail to mature and be released from the ovaries. The ova accumulate as cysts in the ovary, contributing to infertility. Polycystic ovaries are two to five times larger than normal ovaries, and they have a white, thick, tough outer covering. This condition is commonly called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, and usually develops shortly after puberty.

Through this website, I have documented my journey down the long, sometimes complicated road of attempting to conceive our first child, which we have decided now not to actively pursue. I hope that, through my experiences, you can learn a little bit about me and perhaps get enough information to question your doctor about the symptoms and diagnosis of PCOS. When I was first diagnosed, I found that talking to others who were going through the same experiences, treatments and procedures, and using the same medications as I was helped so much.

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?
The ovaries are the organs that produce the eggs in the female reproductive system. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a syndrome in which the ovaries are enlarged and have several fluid-filled sacs or cysts. These cysts may look like a string of pearls or a pearl necklace. A woman can develop one cyst or many cysts. Polycystic ovaries are usually 1.5 to 3 times larger than normal. Women with PCOS may experience a number of other symptoms as well. PCOS is a leading cause of infertility and is the most common reproductive syndrome in women of childbearing age.
    How many women have PCOS?
An estimated five to 10% of women of childbearing age have PCOS (ages 20-40). At least 30% of women have some symptoms of PCOS.

You are about to enter the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Zone… Beware, the subject matter found within this web page is designed to enlighten and encourage women with this dreaded condition. If you enjoy being miserable and feeling like you’re the only person in the universe who must endure PCOS, then you have come to the wrong place! Hello and Welcome to my web site! My name is Dawn and I am a 34 year-old woman who lives with a condition called PCOS.
My original intent for publishing this web site was to help educate and comfort the average PCOS-inflicted woman who happened to find her way into my domain. In retrospect, it was a rather cathartic endeavor that greatly helped to lift my own spirits as well. Please feel free to explore my little chunkof the universe and e-mail me with any comments you might have. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), and Stein-Leventhal Syndrome are all names for the same condition, which I will simply refer to as PCOS throughout my site. PCOS is an endocrine condition that afflicts roughly 6-10% of all pre-menopausal women.
