Anyone who has ever experienced the blisters, swelling, and extreme itching from an unfortunate encounter with poison ivy, learns quickly to avoid it whenever possible. It grows in non-cultivated sites, such as along stream banks, roadways, fencerows, and woodlands. It can even make an appearance in your ornamental shrub or perennial borders. Therefore, knowing how to identify and control it are the best defenses against accidental contact.
Identification
The best way to identify poison ivy ( Rhus radicans ) is by its characteristic compound leaf consisting of three leaflets. The leaflets are two to four inches long, dull or glossy green with pointed tips. The middle leaflet is generally larger than the two laterals. The margins of the leaflets are variable, appearing irregularly toothed, lobed, or smooth. The leaves are positioned alternately on the stems. In contrast, Virginia Creeper, a non-poisonous vine often mistaken for poison ivy, has five leaflets radiating from one point of attachment.

POISON IVY
Toxicodendron rydbergii
Poison ivy was one of the earliest plants noted by the first colonists to reach what would become the United States. Captain John Smith is credited with bestowing the common name because he thought the plant resembled English ivy or Boston ivy. He also observed that the plant "caused itchynge, and lastly, blisters."
At least ten species and subspecies, ranging from eastern Asia to Guatemala, bear the common name "poison ivy." Our local representative is known as Toxicodendron rydbergii. The generic epithet comes from the Greek Toxikos (poisonous) and dendron (tree), while the species name honors Per Axel Rydberg (1860-1930), a Swedish-born botanist how wrote two important books on the flora of Colorado and the Rocky mountains.
Description
This small, woody shrub lacks the climbing, vine-like structure of its better-known eastern relative, T. radicans. The western variety is typically less than three feet tall, although unde r favorable site conditions, where plants have remained relatively undisturbed for several decades, individuals sometimes reach heights of 10 feet or more. Stems are simple or sparsely branched and grow from much branched rhizomes. Long-stalked leaves are borne alternately near the summit of the stem and, like the eastern variety, are divided into three coarse-toothed leaflets, giving rise to the well-known aphorism "leaves of three don't bother me." In fall, the leaves turn brilliant red.

Available at CVS, Rite Aid, and Eckerd Pharmacies. Poison Ivy Wash is a safe and effective topical solution for poison ivy, oak, and sumac. It is the only product known to remove urushiol, the toxin responsible for the reaction, from the skin after bonding, enabling the affected area to immediately begin healing. After using Zanfel, itching and pain are the first things to be relieved, usually within 30 seconds. Unlike Zanfel, other products temporarily reduce itching but do nothing to remove urushiol. Zanfel removes urushiol by binding with it to create an aggregated cluster, which can quickly and effectively be washed away with water. Zanfel can be used at any time after exposure. Zanfel can be applied on any external body area, including the face and genitals, and is safe for use by children and pregnant or nursing women. In the case of systemic, or blood-based reactions, prescription steroids are usually required. If you suspect a systemic reaction, see your doctor immediately. Zanfel can be used in conjunction with steroid treatments. Home Site Map Feedback

http://www.skinsite.com/info_poison_ivy_poison_oak.htm
Poison Ivy/Poison Oak Allergy (Rhus Allergy) I. Causes: Poison ivy and poison oak rashes are caused by an allergy to the resin of these plants, called Rhus plants. You don't have to come in direct contact with the leaves, roots, or branches of Rhus plants to get the rash. The plant resin can reach your skin indirectly when you touch clothing or a pet that carries the resin. Posion oak can spread through the air from the pollen. Like other allergies, Rhus allergy is acquired; you're not born with it. While some lucky people never become allergic to Rhus plants, most persons become sensitized at some time and remain allergic. Unfortunately, there's no way to desensitize persons allergic to Rhus plants. These types of Allergies are forms of allergic contact dermatitis II. Contagion:
  • Your poison ivy or poison oak rash is not contagious. The fluid in the blisters does not spread the rash. Rhus rash doesn't appear immediately after exposure to the plant resin, but only after a time called the latent period. This latent period between exposure to the plant and appearance of the rash may be as short as four hours or as long as 10 days, depending on individual sensitivity and the amount of plant contact. Sometimes, more rash appears after treatment has begun. These new patches are areas that had a longer latent period.

Poison ivy on the knee This is a typical early appearance of a poison ivy rash, located on the knee. These early lesions consist of multiple small blisters (vesicles), often in a line where the skin has brushed against the poison ivy plant. The person may then spread the toxin to other areas of the body by scratching. POISON IVY
Summer is here and it is time to spend some quality time outside. Whether you are hiking or working in your garden, you are always at risk for getting poison ivy. There are three types of plants that cause the same itchy red rash. They are poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. Poison ivy is by far the most common cause of the allergic skin reaction. The spring and summer are the most common times of the year for poison ivy and oak. Poison ivy and oak have three leaves on each stem and grow as a vine or bush. Sumac has two rows of leaves opposite each other and one leaf at the end of the stem. It grows as a bush or tree. The leaves of all three plants are shiny and coated with an oily chemical, which causes the allergic reaction. The oils are also in the stems and roots of these plants. Pets can get the oil on their furry coats and spread the oil to humans. A particularly severe case of poison ivy can occurs when you are burning debris that contains poison ivy plants. The fire produces a vapor that can be inhaled or deposited on the exposed parts of the skin.

    Distribution in Ontario
Poison-ivy ( Rhus radicans L.) is widespread throughout southern Ontario and reaches north approximately as far as Cochrane and Kenora. It is found most abundantly, however, south of a line from the north shore of Lake Huron through North Bay. This includes the densely populated portions of the province and the popular vacation areas. The plant is often mistakenly called "poison oak", but the true poison oak occurs only in the southern and Pacific states of the U.S.A. and not in Ontario. Poison-ivy is extremely variable in both its habit of growth and kinds of habitat. It grows in deep woods or in the open; in dry, sandy areas, crevices of rocks, or swamps; along the borders of woods, fencerows, or roadsides. You are not safe even in your own garden, and you may be surprised to find it growing in your flower beds or shrubbery. Usually it is found in low-growing, rather dense colonies, sometimes practically carpeting the ground. In the counties bordering Lake Erie, there is also a vine form which twines around and climbs up trees, shrubs and posts, often reaching several metres (yards) above the ground.
