The Basics
Symptoms What Is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is when the lungs get inflamed, usually due to infection. Breathing in certain chemical fumes can also cause pneumonia. It's a more common problem than most people think. Usually it's a mild disease, but some forms are very dangerous. In all cases you'll need a doctor's advice. Pneumonia can affect just one section of the lung or many sections of the lung. When both lungs are affected, it's called double pneumonia.

"Super-Pneumonia" or Super Scare?
By Michael Fumento
Scripps Howard News Service, March 26, 2003
"It is the worst medical disaster I have ever seen," the Dean of Medicine at the Chinese University in Hong Kong told a prominent Asian newspaper. This irresistible quote was then shot 'round the world by other media, seeking desperately to hype the "mysterious killer pneumonia" or "super-pneumonia." But a bit of knowledge and perspective will kill this panic. Start with those scary tags. "Mysterious" in modern medicine usually means we haven't yet quite identified the cause, although it appears we have now done so here. What's been officially named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) appears to be one or more strains of coronavirus, commonly associated with colds. "Killer pneumonia" is practically a redundancy, since so many types of pneumonia (there are over 50) do kill. The real questions are: How lethal, how transmissible, and how treatable is this strain? And the answers leave no grounds for excitement, much less panic. Super?

Definition
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. Effects of Pneumonia on the Lungs www.nucleusinc.com
Causes
Pneumonia affects the lower respiratory tract (small bronchi and air sacs in the lungs). There are three main causes: Bacterial Pneumonia – caused by bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus pneumoniae. Tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial pneumonia common throughout the world. Viral Pneumonia – caused by a virus. Viruses cause half of all pneumonias. Mycoplasma (Walking) Pneumonia – caused by mycoplasmas, tiny disease agents that have traits of both bacteria and viruses. This type of pneumonia is often milder. Other causes of pneumonia include:
  • Fungal infections, such as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) – a fungal infection common in people with AIDS Pneumonitis – inflammation of the lungs caused by inhaled chemicals, food, liquids, or foreign objects (can lead to an infectious pneumonia)
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.

pneumonia
Anything that causes a consolidation, or filling up, of the air sacs and tubes of the lung is called a pneumonia. Pneumonia is distinct from and should not be confused with bronchitis. Usually, and as is commonly understood, a pneumonia is caused by an infection, most often bacterial , but sometimes viral in origin. Bacterial pneumonia is most commonly caused by a germ called Streptococcus pneumoniae , and generally involves high fever, cough, and some degree of "toxicity," that is feeling pretty bad. Pneumonia is also caused by mycoplasma , commonly called "walking pneumonia," because the patient isn't all that sick and is literally walking around. Chlamydia can cause pneumonia, especially in very young infants as a consequence of an infection picked up travelling down the birth canal. These babies usually have an eye infection ( conjunctivitis ) to go along with a severe, hacking cough. However, our definition does not exclude pneumonia from other causes, and chief among these is consolidation of a section of the lungs by foreign material, usually vomited food - or aspiration pneumonia. Severely handicapped children who are lying horizontally all the time are at risk for this complication. Hydrocarbon solvents down in the lungs can cause incredibly bad chemical pneumonias. A certain furniture polish is an example of a substance pediatricians advise strongly against having in the home at all for just that reason. It has been lethal on quite a few occasions. Ask your doctor about that and remember that

DUST PNEUMONIA BLUES (Woody Guthrie) (1938)
He [Woody Guthrie] wrote a bitter parody of Jimmie Rodgers, who'd sent so many people yodeling out to California on the promise that the water there would taste like wine. Woody called the song the "Dust Pneumonia Blues," and announced right off that "there ought to be some yodeling in this song," but he couldn't do it because of the dust rattling in his lungs.
Joe Klein, Woody Guthrie: A Life, London, 1981, pp. 115-116. Lyrics as recorded by Woody Guthrie, RCA Studios, Camden, NJ, 26 Apr 1940, released on " Dust Bowl Ballads ," transcribed by Manfred Helfert.

SARS: Mystery illness on the move
... World Health Organization WASHINGTON (Reuters) Worried about catching the stubborn and frightening virus suspected of killing more than 50 people and infecting hundreds worldwide? Wash your hands, health officials advise. Ordinary infection-control measures that can protect people from viruses ranging from the common cold to influenza should work to kill the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise. At least 55 people have died and about 1,500 others have contracted the mystery virus since late last year, according to the World Health Organization. Most of the cases have been in southern China and Southeast Asia. Worried citizens of Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan have taken to wearing surgical masks in public and many avoid cinemas and shopping malls.

Pneumonia causes panic in Guangdong province
Lesley Rosling Mark Rosling , Guangzhou The past fortnight has seen the province of Guangdong in southern China become victim to a serious pneumonia epidemic that seized its people with fear and caused major temporary economic damage but that eventually turned out to have relatively slight medical impact. By last week, there had been eight deaths. However, considerable anxiety was created by an "epidemic of rumours." During the first week of February the public became aware of a mysterious respiratory illness, which apparently had a very high mortality and caused death within hours. Symptoms included cough, fever, and breathing
