Yes No VIEW RESULTS WASHINGTON (CNN) The Army surgeon general said Monday that the number of cases of serious pneumonia reported since March 1 among U.S. service members has risen to 18, up from 16 since the last report 10 days ago. Two of the patients have died. Their deaths are being investigated, said Lyn Kukral, a public affairs officer with the office of the army surgeon general. No infectious agent common to the 18 cases has been found, she said, and there is no evidence that exposure to chemical or biological weapons, or severe acute respiratory syndrome or environmental toxins, caused any of the cases. All 18 patients 17 men and a woman were placed on ventilators. The cases were geographically dispersed, and the afflicted serve in different units.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Atypical pneumonia due to Mycoplasma and Chlamydia usually cause milder forms of pneumonia and are characterized by a more drawn out course of symptoms unlike other forms of pneumonia which can come on more quickly with more severe early symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumonia often affects younger people and may be associated with symptoms outside of the lungs (such as anemia and rashes), and neurological syndromes (such as meningitis, myelitis, and encephalitis). Severe forms of Mycoplasma pneumonia have been described in all age groups.

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection. It is very common in the UK, with around 250,000 cases each year, mostly in people over 65. ... With the most common type of pneumonia, symptoms may come on quite suddenly. There may be pain in the side of the chest that can make breathing and coughing uncomfortable. This is due to the inflammation of the air sacs (alveolar sacs) and narrowing of the fine tubes in the lungs (bronchioles) caused by the infection (see diagram below).
The respiratory tract The cough might be dry at the beginning of the illness but then tends to be productive, with phlegm that is often green/yellow or rust-coloured and may be smelly. Pneumonia also makes you feel ill, with fever, aches and pains, and loss of appetite. The exact symptoms vary depending on how much of the lung is affected and the type of infection responsible.

Centers for Disease Control World Health Organization HONG KONG (CNN) School officials in Hong Kong are telling some students to stay at home for a week because they have been exposed to a form of pneumonia that appears resistant to common treatments. Sunday's order affects only 180 of the 1.2 million students in the area, but officials say the number will grow if cases of the disease continue to mount. So far, five Hong Kong students, a teacher and a school assistant have contracted the illness, a school system statement said. First recognized in Asia in the middle of last month, the pneumonia strain, called severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), has hit nearly 400 people in three continents and by Saturday had claimed 11 lives. Hong Kong, where authorities have reported 222 cases, remains the most seriously affected area in the world.

Pneumonia is caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms. The severity of pneumonia depends on which organism is causing the infection. Viral pneumonias are usually not very serious, but they can be life-threatening in very old and very young patients, and in people whose immune systems are weak. Even severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which is believed to have a viral cause, has caused very few deaths (~3-4% of all cases) as of March 19, 2003. Bob Hope hospitalized for pneumonia
Bob Hope BURBANK, California (CNN) Comedian Bob Hope is responding well to treatment for pneumonia and could be released from the hospital "in a few days," his doctor said Wednesday. Hope's physician, Dr. Lee Kagan, said the 98-year-old entertainer is receiving antibiotics and breathing treatments and was reported in stable condition. Hope's publicist, Ward Grant, said Hope called his doctor Sunday after experiencing difficulty breathing and, following the doctor's recommendation, checked into St. Joseph Medical Center that evening, accompanied by his wife of 67 years, Dolores. "He was in serious condition when he was first admitted," Kagan said. "He was quite ill, but as I say, he has improved." The entertainer was hospitalized in June 2000 for gastrointestinal bleeding. Grant said the current hospitalization has nothing to do with Hope's previous health problem. VIDEO Entertainer Bob Hope checked into a Los Angeles hospital to receive treatment for pneumonia. Pneumonia is a lung disease that can be caused by a variety of viruses, bacteria, and sometimes fungi. The U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate nearly 90,000 people in the United States died from one of several kinds of pneumonia in 1999. In the United States, pneumonia is the fifth leading cause of death [Natl Vital Stat Report 47 (25), 10/5/1999] . Rates of infection are three-times higher in African Americans than in whites and are 5- to 10-times higher in Native-American adults and 10-times higher in Native-American children J Infect Dis On an international scale, acute respiratory infection ranks as the third most frequent cause of death among children less than 5 years old and was responsible for approximately 3.5 million deaths in 1998.

  • General . An infection of the lower respiratory tract, including bacterial, viral, or fungal etiologies. Clinical manifestations include fevers, cough with or without sputum production, shortness of breath, and pleuritic chest pain. Physical exam may reveal crackles (rales) in the lungs with dullness to percussion and egophony. Infiltrates with or without pleural effusions may be seen on CXR. Patients may have few of these findings, particularly the very young or old, or those with other chronic illnesses. Additionally, these findings are nonspecific, and other diagnoses deserve consideration. In children, tachypnea is the most sensitive physical finding and warrants an x-ray even in the absence of rales, etc. The differential diagnosis includes heart failure, malignancy, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary vasculitis, eosinophilic pneumonia, and inflammatory lung diseases, etc.
