Yes No VIEW RESULTS FALLS CHURCH, Virginia (CNN) The U.S. Army said Monday it has activated two medical teams to help investigators determine what has caused about 100 cases of pneumonia two of them fatal among service members in the Persian Gulf since March 1. A team of two doctors, an epidemiologist and an infectious disease specialist is at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where most of the patients have been treated, said Lyn Kukral, a spokeswoman for the Army surgeon general. The second team has been sent to Iraq, where most of the cases occurred, Kukral said. The team will sample soil, water and air. Cases also occurred in Uzbekistan, Kuwait and Qatar, she said.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pneumonia is infection of lung parenchymal tissue . This can be caused by any sort of microorganism ranging from bacteria to viruses to fungi . Doctors classify pneumonias into community acquired pneumonia (both from typical and atypical organisms), nosocomial pneumonia immune compromised pneumonia chronic pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia Before the advent of antibiotics , pneumonia was often fatal, but most community-acquired pneumonias are readily treatable today. Many patients with pneumonia are treated by their own general practitioner and never admitted to hospital . This is often called walking pneumonia because although they can be very ill the patients are still mobile. Some people with walking pneumonia never realise they are ill at all, but merely feel ' run down ' and exhausted. The most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae , also known as Pneumococcus Pneumonia is a serious illness, especially among the elderly and the immuno-compromised and is often a cause of death for these groups. AIDS patients frequently contract pneumocystis pneumonia , an otherwise rare form of the disease. Persons with

Pneumonia
What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an infection of one or both lungs which is usually caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungus. Prior to the discovery of antibiotics, one third of all people who developed pneumonia subsequently died from the infection. Currently, over 3 million people develop pneumonia each year in the United States. Over a half a million of these people are admitted to a hospital for treatment. Although most of these people recover, approximately five percent will die from pneumonia. Pneumonia is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. How do people "catch pneumonia?"
Most cases of pneumonia are contracted by breathing in small droplets that contain the bacteria or virus that can cause pneumonia. These droplets get into the air when a person infected with these germs coughs or sneezes. In other cases, pneumonia is caused when bacteria or viruses that are normally present in the mouth, throat, or nose inadvertently enter the lung. During sleep it is quite common for people to aspirate secretions from the mouth, throat, or nose. Normally, the body's reflex response (coughing back up the secretions) and immune system will prevent a pneumonia from starting. However, if a person is in a weakened condition from another illness, a severe pneumonia can develop. People with emphysema, heart disease, and

Pneumonia in Sheep
Author: Dr. S. John Martin - Veterinary Scientist, Sheep, Goat and Swine/OMAF Creation Date: 1 June 1999 Last Reviewed: 1 June 1999 Pneumonia outbreaks are rarely simple, especially in a group of lambs. The actual infecting agent could be one of a number of bacteria, a mycoplasma or a virus. Many of these organisms are commonly found in the respiratory tract of healthy lambs where they cause no trouble that is until some predisposing factor stresses the respiratory system. The stressor could be the collection of a group of lambs from grass to a dusty yard for shipping, poor ventilation in a barn, build up of ammonia from a manure pack in a building, high humidity, overcrowding or any combination of these. The clinical signs will vary with the severity. Early in an outbreak you may realize that there is more coughing in the group than previously; when moving the lambs some may lag behind and be breathing hard. There can be very sick animals which require individual treatments; there may be some deaths. In one New Zealand report of a pneumonia outbreak, 2-3 days after driving 850 lambs from pasture to a dusty collecting yard, 24 were dead; another 12 died in the next two weeks. There were sporadic cases of pneumonia in the survivors every time that they were handled.

Former Mayor Ed Koch NEW YORK (CNN) Former Mayor Ed Koch has been hospitalized with pneumonia, but issued a statement saying his condition is not life-threatening. The outspoken 76-year-old Democrat, who served three terms in the nonpartisan office from 1978 to 1989, was recovering at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and expects to be released by Friday. "I am alive and well," Koch said in a statement released by his office. "There is no danger to my situation and I am not infectious. I expect to be back at the office by Monday and resume a full work schedule." Koch suffered from shortness of breath and a fever while he was visiting friends in Washington, Connecticut, during the weekend, his aide Mary Garrigan told CNN in a phone interview. He was taken to a Connecticut hospital and then transferred to Columbia Presbyterian in New York City.

Yeltsin hospitalized; pneumonia suspected
November 29, 1999
Web posted at: 12:08 p.m. EST (1708 GMT) MOSCOW Russian President Boris Yeltsin was taken to the hospital Monday with suspected pneumonia, just days after falling ill with what doctors described as bronchitis, the Kremlin said. The president, 68, was taken to the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow for examination and treatment. Doctors had examined him earlier Monday at his country home and decided to hospitalize him. Yeltsin had been resting at the country residence outside Moscow after being diagnosed last Thursday with bronchitis. Doctors had said that his condition was not serious and he needed to rest, but his condition apparently deteriorated, forcing his hospitalization Monday.

What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia means that there is an infection or inflammation in the lung tissue. It can be caused by a lot of different micro-organisms - viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites that are too small to see - but it can also be caused by corrosive chemicals breathed into the stomach or toxic gases from a fire.
Pneumonia is still a common disease. Many people die from it every year, most commonly women and people over the age of 70. The overall death rate due to pneumonia is currently 5 per cent.
Half of all pneumonia cases are caused by bacteria . The streptococcus bacteria, known as pneumococcus, is the main cause of the most typical pneumonia.

ASHUK Factsheet on smoking and lung cancer, COPD, pneumonia.
http://www.ash.org.uk/html/factsheets/html/fact05.html
factsheet no:5 Smoking and respiratory disease Action on Smoking and Health – March 2004 Introduction It is estimated that smoking causes some 114,000 premature deaths every year Lung cancer Lung cancer kills more people than any other type of cancer and at least 80% of these deaths are caused by smoking. In 1999, 29,406 people in England and Wales died of lung cancer. Although it has been declining slightly among men under 65 during the past 20 years, it is still rising in women. It is the most commonly found cancer in men in the UK and has now overtaken breast cancer as the leading cancer killer of women, responsible for 13,110 deaths in 1999 compared to 13,020 deaths from breast cancer. The risk of lung cancer increases directly with the number of cigarettes smoked. In a study of male British doctors, Number of cigarettes smoked per day Annual death rate per 100,000 men 78 (8 times that of non-smokers) 127 (13 times that of non-smokers) 25 or more 251 (25 times that of non-smokers) Increased risk of developing lung cancer Age at time of starting to smoke is important. The younger a person is when he or she starts smoking, the greater the risk of developing lung cancer. A recent US study found that smoking during the teenage years causes permanent genetic changes in the lungs and forever increases the risk of lung cancer, even if the smoker subsequently stops.
