Pinworms
By Henriette Pinworms are admirably adapted to the human host, and don't do any damage, except that you scratch your ass all the time. If friends visit your place, and you have had pinworms for a while (which implies microscopic pinworm eggs everywhere, including your breathing air), your friends start scratching -their- asses about two weeks after their visit. Two weeks is the time it takes the eggs to grow into mature pinworms, mate, and lay eggs outside your rectum, making it itch.
Hmmmm, your friends go, trying to figure out where they might have caught it, remembering the way your cat, dog, and toddler dragged their asses along the floor. And your social life suffers. Lots. The females make short excursions around the anus to lay their eggs (which is why the itch). Older pinworms die and are eliminated with your feces. The eggs sort of fall off. However, you get new pinworm eggs in your breathing air with every breath you take, if you live in a pinworm household. First you burn the pinworm house. (I once asked those in the know about vacuum cleaners. They looked at me with pity in their eyes, and sniggered.)

The best preventive in the world is available at EVERY supermarket and drugstore ... it's called SOAP. Lax hygiene spreads worms. And ALL members of the household need to be treated at once. One non-prescription treatment is green pumpkin seeds, ground into a powder and uses to thicken a sauce or soup (approximately 1 tablespoon powder for toddlers up to 1/4 to 1/2 cup for adults). Give three days in a row, and repeat in a 2 weeks.

Topic Overview
What are pinworms? Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) are a type of parasite that live in the lower digestive system of humans and survive by eating nutrients from the person's food. They are common, especially in school-age children. Adult pinworms are small, thread-like roundworms no more than 13 mm (0.5 in.) long. Their eggs are oval-shaped, flat on one side, and cannot be seen without a microscope. Pinworms are also called "seat worms" or "bits of white thread" worms. How do I get pinworms? You usually get pinworms by swallowing their eggs. This happens when someone with pinworms scratches around the anus , gets eggs on his or her hands (or under the fingernails), and touches you or an object that you later touch. Pinworms are spread easily in families, daycare centres, schools, camps, and institutional adult living environments.

Pawpaws and Mastodons, Logferns and Pinworms Lytton John Musselman Asimina (which appropriately is a Native American name). There are nine species in the Southeastern United States. Only two are widespread, however. These are the dwarf pawpaw ( Asimina parviflora ) which occurs in deep sand and the common pawpaw, ( Asimina triloba) . Common pawpaw is found mainly in forested Wetlands and reaches its greatest ecological importance in alluvial forests of the Ohio Valley. In Southeastern Virginia and neighboring North Carolina, plants associated with pawpaw include red maple, Japanese honeysuckle, American holly, etc.,- all plants typical of forested wetlands. I note that in Region I, pawpaw is listed as a FACU+² but based on my field experience in the southeast, I suggest it may better be classified as a FACW. Eurytides marcellus Cramer) feed almost exclusively on pawpaw but few other insects cherish it. This is particularly interesting because the leaves are large and somewhat succulent, and would appear inviting to insects. But there is good reason why pawpaws are not attacked. They contain a natural insecticide based on a group of compounds called acetogenins. In limited tests at Purdue University, extracts from all parts of the plant have yielded significant amounts of the compound. This insecticide has shown efficacy against a broad group of insects. Dryopteris ) are plants found in diversity of habitats including Wetlands. For many years, we have been studying the Dismal Swamp logfern

Enterobius vermicularis, Oxyuris spp.)
Over 200 million people worldwide are thought to be infested by pinworms with 30 to 40 million living in the United States. This worm is found in both warm and cold climates and no socioeconomic group is immune to infection. It is commonly found in crowded institutions such as day-care centers, schools, hospitals and orphanages. It is most prevalent in children. They are tiny, 2-13 millimeters, and ivory or pearly-white in color. Eighty percent of the children between 2 and 10 years of age contract pinworms at some time. Adult worms inhabit the cecum and other portions of the large and small intestines. Female worms crawl down the intestines and pass out of the anus to lay their eggs around the anal region at night. Occasionally, they can be found on the first stool in the morning. One female can deposit over 15,000 eggs that become infective immediately or within a few hours. This common occuring worm is acquired through contaminated food, water, and house dust, as well as human-to-human contact. The crawling of the female worm on the skin around the anal area often produces intense itching causing a person to scratch there, getting the eggs on the hands. Without washing, the hands touch the mouth. Now the eggs are swallowed and hatch in the lower colon where the worms mate, and cycle continues. The eggs are usually found on the infected person's pajamas and bed linen. Children can easily infect the entire family through the bathtub, toilet seat, and bedclothes. The eggs are easily transported by air currents making it common to find them in every room of the house; on sheets, clothes, walls and carpets. They can easily stay viable for weeks. Infections and reinfections continue by wearing clothes or sleeping in the bed of an infected person, as well as handling infected pets. It can be passed from an infected person that handles the food in the household. If one person in the family has pinworms, it is common to find others infected as well.

Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis , for all you taxonomists) are a common parasite of humans. I've read that perhaps 40 or 50% of us harbor at least a few pinworms at any given time. They are tiny white threadlike creatures, about a quarter of an inch long. They live in the colon of humans only. They are harmless and cause no symptoms except itching around the anus. Repeat: no belly aches from pinworms, no weight loss, nothing but itch (admittedly, it can be quite an itch). It's icky to think of, but let's face it: pinworms are a manifestation of our generally poor hygeine when it comes to the toilet. A brief review of the life cycle of the pinworm explains why. The little creature crawls out of the anus and lays eggs. The eggs cause itching. Itching gets scratched. The fingernails have eggs on them. Things get touched with contaminated fingers. Fingers go directly in the mouth (reinfection) or new fingers pick up eggs by touching contaminated objects. Then THOSE fingers go in the mouth. Then the eggs hatch in the GI tract of a new person and off we go. The symptoms are squirming and scratching of the area around the anus, especially at night when the little buggers come out. If you want to check the child suspected of pinworms, go in about a half hour after bedtime and examine the area around the anus for the little white threads. Alternatively, your doctor may want you to do a Scotch-tape slide test before treating.

Darkfield Image Gallery Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis As the most common nematode parasite of humans in North America and Europe, pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) infect more than 400 million people worldwide. Living in the large intestine, pinworm infestations may be asymptomatic or result in mild irritations of the gastrointestinal tract. Mature female pinworms are about twice as long as the 5-millimeter-long males, which live only until copulation occurs. When she is ready to lay her 10,000 plus eggs, the female nematode crawls out of the host's anus, deposits the eggs on the perianal skin, and then dies. At the average human body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the eggs develop rapidly and reach their third juvenile stage as infective eggs in approximately 6 hours. The eggs are ingested by another human host and hatch in the small intestine. In about a month, the parasitic nematodes reach maturity and reproduce sexually, reinitiating the life cycle. A common symptom of a pinworm infestation is perianal itching associated with the nocturnal egg-laying habits of E. vermicularis

    PINWORMS
    (Enterobiasis; Oxyuriasis)
A common intestinal parasitic infection which primarily affects children.
    Causes and risks
Pinworm infection is due to the small worm called Enterobius vermicularis. It is the most common worm infection in the United States and it most commonly affects school-age children. Its only reservoir are humans, and it is transmitted from person-to-person by ingesting eggs (oral-fecal route), or by contact with contaminated bedding, food, or other items. Upon ingestion of eggs, larvae eventually hatch in the small intestine and worms then mature in the colon. Female worms then migrate to the anal area, especially at night, and deposit their eggs which may lead to itching and sometimes infection of the involved area.
    Prevention
Good personal hygiene with emphasis on washing hands after using the bathroom and before preparing food is essential. Minimizing overcrowding, frequent washing of bedding and underclothing in particular of affected individual is also important.

    How to Treat Pinworms
Pinworms are tiny parasitic worms that live in your large intestine. While they do not pose a significant health problem, they are a nuisance. Symptoms include anal itching, sleeplessness, irritability, and anal irritation due to scratching. Steps: Assess whether you or your child have pinworms. The simplest method is to place a piece of cellophane tape against the anus. Do this first thing in the morning, before bathing or having a bowel movement. The eggs and sometimes a worm will get stuck to the tape. Then they can be brought to your doctor for a diagnosis. Treat the pinworms once they're diagnosed. Many safe and effective medications are available, both over the counter and by prescription. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a recommendation. Treat all family members, whether they have symptoms or not. Pinworms are very easily transmitted. Curing pinworms is easy, but reinfestation is very common. Take precautions to keep this from happening.
