What are pinworms? lice How can I tell if my child has pinworms? The nighttime itching is the big tip-off. You can confirm your suspicions by checking your child for worms at night with a flashlight. You can also check for the presence of worms by pressing a piece of transparent tape to your child's anus. Eggs will stick to the tape, and you can take it to your pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor may also have a special kit designed to collect pinworm eggs. (You can often find the eggs even if you can't detect the actual worms.) If you don't find pinworms or eggs, anal itching may signal other problems, including dryness from cleaning the area too vigorously with soap. Red, tender skin around his anus could also be the result of irritation from

Are there any alternative therapies for pinworms?
Pinworms are small, white, threadlike worms that can live in the large intestine. Pinworms are spread when people who are infested unknowingly transfer the eggs to their fingers, clothes, or bedding. Other people then pick up these eggs through food or by touch. The main symptom of a pinworm infestation is intense nighttime itching near the anus. No alternative therapies have been shown to be effective in the treatment of pinworms. Over-the-counter drugs are usually very successful in eliminating the problem. Doctors can prescribe medicines if over-the-counter products don't work. To prevent spreading or getting pinworms, always wash your hands after using the bathroom and before eating. Be sure to wash after petting animals as well, because they can easily carry pinworm eggs. Cook food carefully and thoroughly. Use soap and water to clean all knives and utensils used on raw meat. Avoid restaurants that seem unsanitary. Shower daily in the morning, and keep fingernails short.

What are pinworms?
Pinworms are small, white, threadlike worms that can live in the large intestine. Pinworm infestation is very common, especially in children. Pinworms spread very easily. Female pinworms exit the anus during the night to lay their eggs. This causes itching, and people with pinworms may unknowingly transfer the eggs to their fingers, clothes, or bedding. Other people then pick up these eggs through food or by touch. The eggs enter the mouth and mature in the large intestine. The pinworm's life cycle is four to six weeks. The main symptom of a pinworm infestation is intense nighttime itching near the anus. Pinworms rarely cause any damage, but the itching is uncomfortable and can cause trouble sleeping, leading to tiredness and irritability.

Pinworms
Pinworms are small curved worms that live as parasites on horses, rabbits, and other mammals. One type infests the human intestines and rectum. These pinworms are also called "seatworms" or "threadworms." They most often occur in children between the ages of five and fourteen. Pinworms are not dangerous but can be irritating and lead to skin infections due to scratching. The female pinworm lives in the intestine and crawls to the opening of the rectum at night to lay her eggs. The sticky coating that attaches the eggs to the skin is irritating and causes itching. The young pinworms are transferred to the hands when the child scratches around the rectum. Pinworm eggs are very small and can be breathed in from the air or can be swallowed when a child puts dirty hands in their mouth. Pinworms may also be spread from objects such as toys or clothing.

Threadworms Pinworms, Enterobius vermicularis) www.Studenthealth.co.uk It is estimated that threadworms infect more than 400,000,000 people throughout the world (10% of humans), and in many areas of the world (e.g., North America and Europe) it is the most common nematode parasite of humans. Adult threadworms live in the large intestines; males and females are about 5 mm and 10 mm long, respectively. After copulation the males die. When the female is ready to lay eggs she crawls out of the anus and deposits the eggs on the surrounding perianal skin; a single female can produce more than 10,000 eggs. After laying her eggs, the female also dies. At body temperature the eggs develop quickly and are infective in a few hours. When ingested by another person the eggs hatch in the small intestine, and the juvenile worms grow into adult, sexually mature worms in about a month. The commonest symptom associated with threadworm infections is an itchy bottom (Pruritus ani). Scratching of the perianal skin to relieve the itching can lead to bacterial infections. This cycle can result in a situation where the infected person becomes very uncomfortable. In women, the adult threadworms can enter the vagina and cause additional irritation. Threadworms are highly contagious. The eggs are infective within a few hours of being laid, and they are deposited directly on the perianal skin. Bed linen, clothing, carpets, etc., can be contaminated with eggs. The infected person's hands will, invariably, be contaminated with eggs, providing a route for reinfection and egg dispersal. It is for this reason that if one member of a family is infected for threadworms, the whole family is treated.

Does everyone have pinworms?
19-Dec-2000 Dear Straight Dope: I've been itching to ask these questions for some time, but it's not exactly a subject you bring up with your roommate or business colleague. Is it true that everyone has some pinworms in their colon and the worms are only noticed when they overpopulate? Also, is it true that garlic can rid the bowels of pinworms? Irae Noir SDSTAFF Lynn replies: Enterobius vermicularis . Alternative names: seatworm; enterobiasis Enterobius vermicularis; oxyuriasis; threadworm; pinworm infection Mom was right. You should always wash your hands thoroughly with soap after using the bathroom and before handling food or eating. We don't all have pinworm, but an awful lot of us do. Pinworm is the most common human worm infection in the United States. According to various reports, rates of infection vary from 10% to almost 50% in children under 12, depending on the group. School-age children have the highest incidence of infection, followed by preschoolers. Like lice, pinworm is readily spread through schools and child care centers. Adults are much less likely to have pinworm, unless the adult is a caretaker of infected children. Sometimes pinworm is spread to other family members as well. Pinworm eggs are collected on the fingers, generally when the patient scratches his itchy bottom. From there, the eggs can be spread to other surfaces, where they can live for several days, just waiting to be picked up and swallowed by their next host. If the patient puts his fingers in his mouth, the eggs can be swallowed and reinfect him. These pinworms, incidentally, infect only humans and a few kinds of apes. They do not infect common household pets.

Pinworms
Within the Order Ascaridida, in the superfamily Oxyyuroidea is a nematode parasite commonly associated with children in daycare centers, boarding schools and also in senior citizens homes. Commonly known as the pinworm Enterobius vermicularis is a nematode which is not highly pathogenic but can be considerably irritating to those infected. The eggs which are very resistant to desiccation are ingested orally and contain infective L3 larvae. They hatch on entering the duodenum and migrate gradually down to the ileo-cecal junction molting twice to become adult worms. This can take anywhere from 15 to 45 days. Males die soon after copulation, but females migrate down the colon through the rectum and out onto the perianal area where they lay their eggs. The gravid females can lay up to 16,000 eggs before they die. The eggs are already partially embryonated and at body temperature reach the L3 stage within 6 hours. The adult worms are very distinctive having a very short stout body with a pointed tail and a very prominent pharyngeal basal bulb. They also have the 3 lips, characteristic of this Order. The eggs also have a very characteristic flattened appearance similar in shape to a grain of rice. An infection with these worms are generally asymptomatic. However, the worms which tend to lay their eggs at night when the host is at rest, can cause irritation when they appear on the perianal area promoting scratching by the host. This scratching can sometimes be aggressive enough to cause bleeding and secondary bacterial infections.

What is a pinworm?
A pinworm is a white, very thin worm about 1/4 inch long that moves. If it doesn't wiggle, it's probably lint or a thread. Pinworms usually are seen in the anal and buttock area, especially at night or early in the morning. Sometimes a pinworm is found on the surface of a bowel movement. More than 10% of children have pinworms. They do not cause any serious health problems. However, they can cause much itching and irritation of the anal area and bottom.

What are pinworms?
A pinworm is a white, short, very thin worm. You may see them around your child's anus (where the bowel movements, or BM's, come out). You may also see them in a BM. If your child's bottom itches, your child may have pinworms. Pinworms are not serious. But they need to be treated. Use a flashlight to check for pinworms.
  • Look around the anus for the small, white worms. Look a few hours after your child goes to bed or check first thing in the morning. Check two nights or two mornings in a row.
