How Do I Know If I Have Pinworms?
If you have pinworms, you might see the worms in the toilet after you go to the bathroom. They look like tiny pieces of white thread. You also might see them on your underwear when you wake up in the morning. But the pinworm eggs are too tiny to be seen without a microscope. The itching from the pinworms might wake you up in the middle of the night and make you squirm a lot. So if you're itchy and sore on your backside, tell your mom or dad. And if you see worms in your underwear or in the toilet, you should tell a parent right away. You should know, though, that some people with pinworms don't have any symptoms at all. What Will the Doctor Do?
If your mom or dad thinks you have pinworms, she or he will take you to the doctor so you can get medicine to get rid of the worms. To be sure that you have pinworms, the doctor may have your parent help you do an easy test at home. Your parent will place a small piece of tape on the skin around your anus when you first get up in the morning, then take it off and bring it to the doctor. It doesn't hurt at all, and the doctor will look at the tape under a microscope to see if there are any eggs on it. He or she might also take some samples from under your fingernails to see if there are any eggs. If you have pinworms, don't worry. They don't cause any harm (just itching!), and it won't take long to get rid of them. Your doctor will give you some medicine that you will take twice over 2 weeks to be sure the worms are gone. The doctor can also give you a cream to help stop the itching. Because it's easy to pass pinworms on to other people, the doctor may want the other people in your house to take medicine, too. Your mom or dad will probably have to clean the house to get rid of any eggs that might still be around, and everybody's pajamas and sheets will need to be washed.

Today's Question Plagued by Pinworms?
What do you recommend for pinworms? My 9-year-old son has them.
TBW
Today's Answer (Published 05/06/2004) Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) are small, white worms, about half an inch long, that live in the intestines. Infections with pinworms aren’t dangerous, but they are a nuisance. About two weeks after infection, the females crawl out via the anus and lay eggs on the surrounding skin. This causes itching around the rectum that usually is worse at night and can be annoying enough to disturb a child’s sleep. In girls, a pinworm infection can spread to the vaginal area causing irritation, itching, and even a discharge. When kids scratch the itchy area, the eggs can get under their fingernails and then be transferred to toys, eating utensils, dishes, glasses, and other objects where they can live for two to three weeks and infect other youngsters or family members. Kids unknowingly pass pinworm eggs back and forth at school and at child care centers. The adults most likely to pick up infections are the mothers of infected youngsters.

Pinworms
Pin worms are small (1/4 -1/2 inch long), white worms that look like small pieces of thread that cause itching around the anus (without a rash), especially at night. Pinworms infect only humans, living in their intestines and are easily transmitted to other people. The adult female pinworm travels to the skin around the anus at night and lays her eggs. When your child itches the area, he will get the eggs under his nails. The eggs are then transmitted to another person, who gets the eggs on their hands and then places their hands in their mouth, swallowing the eggs. The eggs hatch in the intestines and mature into adults, who mate, producing females who can then lay eggs and continue to spread the illness. If you think that your child has pinworms, you take look at his bottom in the middle of the night and look for the adult worms. If you don't see the worms, your doctor might recommend doing a scotch tape test or using a pinworm prep test to look for the eggs. Scotch tape placed with the sticky part against your child's anus will pick up any eggs that can then be seen under a microscope.

Pinworms, roundworms, hookworms, and ringworms
Pinworms, roundworms, ringworms and hookworms are worms or fungai that commonly infect people, mostly children. I will describe each and what you need to do to get rid of them.
Pinworms, roundworms, ringworms and hookworms are worms or fungai that commonly infect people, mostly children. Worm infestation is common in children throughout the world. There are large worms, microscopic worms, and all sizes in between. The four most common worms that people get will be reviewed in this article. bodyOffer(28737) Roundworms, also known as ascariasis, are most commonly contracted in tropical climates. However, at least 4 million children in the US are diagnosed with it each year. Round worms are found in the soil, but were originally placed there through human or animal feces. The worms can live for years in the soil. When a child plays in the dirt with their hands and then puts their hands into their mouths they can get these worms. Roundworms can be diagnosed through a stool sample by your doctor. Some of the complications that can come of roundworms are nutritional deficiencies, or intestinal obstructions. Your doctor will give you a medication to kill the worm in your intestines. Ringworm is not really a worm, but a fungus. It is still highly contagious and can be spread from person to person. They are usually transmitted via the family pet to a child. Cats are the most common carrier of these worms because the owner doesnt usually know they are infected. When dogs get ringworm you will see the symptoms fairly soon. Their hair falls out and large bare patches will indicate you need to take them to the vet. Hair loss does not occur in cats. The symptoms on humans is scaly patches of skin and hair loss can occur. You will know you have ring worm when the scaly patch is a circle and the outer rim is formed into a ring. The doctor will prescribe an antifungal cream.

Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) are a type of parasite that live in the lower digestive system of humans and survive by eating nutrients from the person's food. They are common, especially in school-age children. Adult pinworms are small, threadlike roundworms no more than 0.5 in.(12.7 mm) long. Their eggs are oval-shaped, flat on one side, and cannot be seen without a microscope. Pinworms are also called "seat worms" or "bits of white thread" worms. How do I get pinworms? You usually get pinworms by swallowing their eggs. This happens when someone with pinworms scratches around the anus , gets eggs on his or her hands (or under the fingernails), and touches you or an object that you later touch.

How can I tell if my child has pinworms?
The nighttime itching is the big tip-off, says Doug Kress, assistant professor and director of clinical services for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center department of dermatology. You can confirm your suspicions by checking your child for worms at night with a flashlight. You can also check for the presence of worms by gently pressing a piece of transparent tape to your child's anus. Eggs will stick to the tape, and you can take it to your pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor may also have a special kit designed to collect pinworm eggs. (You can often find the eggs even if you can't detect the actual worms.) If you don't find pinworms or eggs, anal itching may signal other problems, including dryness from cleaning the area too vigorously with soap. Red, tender skin around your child's anus could also be the result of irritation from diaper rash, diarrhea , or a bacterial infection; if you suspect an infection, call your pediatrician.

Dear Alice, My wife developed pinworms from her special-ed students (we think). Our HMO could not diagnose it (or lost the test results). We felt sure that the symptomology was that of pinworms and proceeded to take 100 mg of Vermox (mebendazole). It seemed to work since the itching started to subside and a cluster of "dental-floss looking" worms was "delivered" in the john. Since the delivery she has taken the Vermox again to destroy the eggs and plans to do it again in 3 weeks. The question is: "How hard is it to get rid of these worms once you've had them for over a year? Should she repeat the dosage every 2-3 weeks if itching returns?" Thank you in advance for any help you might give us (the HMO certainly didn't want to do anything). By some estimates, close to one-fifth of all children in the United States have pinworms at any given time. In fact, pinworms are probably the most common of all worm infestations in humans infective pinworm eggs can live indoors for up to two weeks, presumably in hope of being taken in by a human host. Young children tend to be most effective at ingesting and spreading pinworm eggs. Most likely, then, you're correct in guessing that your wife picked up these little buggers in her classroom. The length of time that you've had pinworms should not affect the treatment or make it more difficult to get rid of them. It's not as if the pinworms will erect an entire city in a year's time, versus a squatter settlement if given only a few weeks. The mebendazole is one of the most effective drugs out there for getting rid of pinworms, as well as other helminth relatives of the pinworm. To treat pinworms, you only need to take one 100 mg tablet at first. Two weeks later, you take one more tablet. After that, it's best to wait about three weeks before deciding whether or not to take a third dose. If symptoms do not reappear, you probably got rid of them and don't require any further treatment.
