Pinkeye
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Pinkeye, known medically as conjunctivitis (cun-JUNK-tuh-VI-tis), is an irritation of the inner eyelid and the surface of the white part of the eye. If caused by an infection, the disease spreads easily from person to person. With care, the problem should clear up in 7 days.
Causes
Infections and allergies are the most common causes. Air pollution, smoke, dust, and pollen may also be at fault.
Signs/Symptoms
Typically, you'll have painful red eyes, puffy eyelids, or a gritty feeling in the eyes. You may have clear, yellow, or green-colored eye discharge that may form crusts and cause the eyelids to stick together, especially in the morning.
Care
Your doctor will order tests to find the cause. If a bacterial infection is the culprit, the doctor may prescribe antibiotic medication.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
  • To ease discomfort, apply a clean, warm or cool washcloth to your eye several times a day for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Do not touch or rub your eyes with your hands.

PINKEYE
Pinkeye ( infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis ) is a common infectious disease affecting the eyes of cattle. The name describes the redness and inflammation of the lining of the eyelid and eyeball. Although pinkeye is non-fatal, it has a marked economic impact on the cattle industry. It is known to occur at all seasons of the year and in all breeds of cattle. Pinkeye and foot rot are the two most prevalent conditions affecting all breeding beef females One or both eyes may be involved. Excessive weeping of the affected eye and closure due to pain are the two signs most commonly observed. As the disease progresses, the cornea becomes cloudy or white. An ulcer (eroded circular spot) frequently develops near the center of the cornea. Cattle with pinkeye keep the affected eye or eyes closed because of pain and to avoid bright sunlight. They lose weight because they are reluctant to forage for feed and water. The course of the infection may run for 4 to 8 weeks, or even longer. As the eye begins to heal, white scar tissue infiltrates the cornea. In most cases this scar will gradually disappear as healing progresses and vision will be restored. However, in severely affected eyes, a white scar often persists and interferes with vision. If the ulceration is severe enough to penetrate all layers of cells forming the cornea, the fluid in the eyeball will escape. This results in the iris and/or lens protruding partially or entirely through the ulceration. If this occurs, there will be permanent blindness in the affected eye.

Today's Answer (Published 05/05/1997) (Published 5/5/97) "Pinkeye" is a term used for common eye infections, and yes, it's not unusual to have a thick or crusty discharge with it. Some cases of pinkeye result from infection by an adenovirus. With this or any other viral infection, the discharge from the eye is usually watery and thin. It can't be treated with medications - but it often helps to bathe the eye with a sterile saline solution. The problem usually goes away on its own within a few days. Bacterial eye infections will emit a thicker, pus-like discharge that can crust over and make it hard for you to open your eyes in the morning. They may feel scratchy or burning and the lids may be moderately swollen. Antibiotics, like sulfacetamide sodium 10 percent drops or gentamicin 0.3 percent (used over seven to ten days) are the usual treatment. Eye infections are extremely contagious, and are spread easily from fingers to eyes. In general, ways to avoid infecting the other eye or others in the family include:

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
This condition is also known as pink eye because the infected eye becomes inflamed, red and irritated looking. Conjunctivitis is one of the most common infectious diseases of the eye and generally seen more common in children than adults. Conjunctivitis is generally highly contagious, however, it rarely causes injury to the child's eye or to the child's vision. The first symptom of conjunctivitis is discomfort in the eye, usually itching or burning sensation. This is then followed by redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva , the tissue covering the outer surface of the eye and inner surface of the eyelids. Most of the time there is only mild to moderate discomfort created, however, at times there can be pain associated with the conjunctivitis. It is also common for infected individual to complain of the sensation of a foreign body in their eye. Generally, neither the itching nor the feeling that there is something in the eye, is made better by rubbing or scratching and often the discomfort is made worse.
There may be a white, yellow, or green discharge from the eyes. When the conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria, the discharge will generally be somewhat thick and often greenish in color. When conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, the discharge is generally thinner and may be yellow or greenish. In some children bacterial conjunctivitis is often associated with an ear infection, the same bacteria causing both infections.

about options that may be available for your specific situation. DESCRIPTION Conjunctivitis, also known as Pinkeye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelid and wraps around to cover most of the white of the eye. The eyes may appear swollen and bloodshot; they are often itchy and irritated. Because the infected membrane is often filled with pus, the eyelids are apt to stick together after being closed for an extended period of time (such as when sleeping). Factors that can contribute to conjunctivitis include bacterial infection, injury to the eye, such as fumes, smoke, contact lens solutions, chlorine from swimming pools, chemicals, makeup, or any other foreign substance that enters the eye. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious if it is caused by a viral infection. NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS Unless otherwise specified, the dosages recommended here are for adults. For a child between the ages of 12 and 17, reduce the dose to 3/4 the recommended amount. For a child between 6 and 12 years of age, use 1/2 the recommended dosage, and for a child under the age of 6, use 1/4 the recommended amount.

How to Care for Pinkeye
Conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, is an inflammation of the membrane that lines your eyeball and eyelid. It can be caused by a foreign body, an allergic reaction or a bacterial or viral infection. Steps: Determine if you have one or more of the following pinkeye symptoms: red, watery eyes; itching; sensitivity to light; or eye discharge that might be crusty around the eyelashes. Wash your hands before touching the eye area. Clean the eye area with a clean washcloth dampened with warm water. Use a cool compress to relieve itching. Wash any clothing, towels and bedding touched by the infected eye; bacterial and viral infections are very contagious. Avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection clears up. Note any yellow or greenish discharge from the eye. If this occurs or if only one eye is affected, it is more likely to be a bacterial infection than a viral infection or an allergy'consult your doctor for treatment. Tips: There is no over-the-counter medicine specifically for pinkeye. If the problem is caused by bacteria, you'll need to see a doctor for treatment. Viruses need to run their course. If the pinkeye is caused by an allergy, get rid of the allergen or see your doctor for allergy relief.

Pinkeye
Pinkeye, or conjunctivitis, is a very contagious infection of the eye. It is characterized by inflammation of the eyelids and eyeballs. It occurs in the membrane that lines the eyelids and the eyeball. Pinkeye can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Pollutants like allergens, chemicals, dust, and smoke may cause or worsen the problem. Swimming may be linked to it because of exposure to chlorine in public pools or to contaminated water. Symptoms may last several days or up to two weeks. they include:
  • redness in the white of the eye a sandy feeling in the eye burning itching blurred vision and sensitivity to light and discharge in the eye that forms a crust during the night, sealing the eye shut
If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed. The child must not touch the eye and must wash his or her hands often. Conjunctivitis can be easily passed from eye to eye or from person to person. It can spread through a whole classroom of children in just a few days. Children should not return to school until they have had 24 hours of treatment. Warm compresses may relieve some discomfort.

Personal MD.com Medical Contributor Probably the most common and misunderstood eye disorder is pinkeye, also known as conjunctivitis. The concern of parents when they find out their child or someone in their childs school has pinkeye is understandable, but it is safe to say that most pinkeye is harmless, and with some common sense, can be easily controlled and eradicated. What causes pinkeye? Pinkeye occurs because the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelids and partially covers the eyeball, becomes inflamed. It is the most common disorder of the eye in North America. Pinkeye can result from either allergic or infectious causes.

The Pink iBook Project
I took on a little customization project last week (as if I wasn't busy enough already) and stripped apart Nora's (Meghan's sister) white iBook and made it into a pink iBook. It turned out pretty nice, if I do say so myself. The white paint was removed using rubbing alcohol and lots of time and gentle scrubbing. Finding the right color of pink paint in a spray can was a challenge and a half and involved finally going to WalMart at 10pm at night. Did you know you can camp in your RV in their lot? Apparently so. Here are some more detailed photos of the pink iBook:
There you have it. A bubble-gum pink iBook.
