Sports Sunday, September 14, 2003 ‘Pink eye’ disease just sore eyes By Niel Villegas Mugas, Reporter The Department of Health on Thursday advised the people not to panic over the “pink eye” disease, which has reportedly affected thousands of Koreans this year. Dr. Troy Gepte, epidemiologist from the department’s National Epidemiology Center explained in an interview that the pink-eye disease is nothing more than the common sore eyes Filipinos suffer mostly during summer and added that there is absolutely no reason to panic. Pink-eye disease, or simply sore eyes, is mainly caused by a virus and is characterized by itchiness of the eye or foreign body sensations. It can also cause redness and pain in the eyes and sometimes blurring of vision. Some cases involved low-grade fever, headache and general weakness. Back To Top

Epidemiology and Control of Pink Rot of Potatoes
E. O'Sullivan and L.J. Dowley Crops Research Centre, Oak Park, Carlow ISBN 1 901138 73 9 September 1998
This report is also available in the printer-friendly Adobe Acrobat PDF (29 KB) format.
Summary
Rotting of tubers was reported in early potato crops in Co. Wexford in 1995. Geotrichum candidum , which causes a condition known as rubbery rot, was isolated from a sample of affected tubers. In further investigations in 1996 both G. candidum and Phytophthora erythroseptica , the cause of pink rot, were isolated from diseased tubers. In pathogenicity tests P. erythroseptica re-infected tubers while G. candidum did not. It was concluded that the disease was pink rot. In 1997 foliar applications of the systemic fungicide metalaxyl were evaluated for its control. The level of control obtained was insufficient to overcome the problem which pink rot can cause in early potatoes.
Introduction
There were widespread reports of soft rotting of potato tubers in first and second early crops in Co. Wexford in 1995. An investigation of some crops in late July showed that the problem was not soft rot but a condition similar to pink rot caused by Phytophthora erythroseptica . This disease was first described in Ireland by Pethybridge (1913) and was subsequently reported in several other countries (Stamps, 1978). The affected tubers, while soft and spongy, remained intact. The exposed surfaces of cut tubers turned pink and subsequently black. In a preliminary study

Pink Eye
(Conjunctivitis)
What is "pink eye"?
Pink eye or conjunctivitis refers to a redness or irritation of the membranes on the inner part of the eyelids and the membranes (conjuctiva) covering the whites of the eyes. These membranes react to a wide range of bacteria, viruses, allergy- provoking agents, irritants, and toxic agents, as well as to underlying diseases within the body. Viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are common in childhood. Overall however, there are many causes of pink eye. These can be classified as either infectious or noninfectious. What infections cause pink eye and how are they treated?
Viral Pink Eye

The leading cause of a red eye is virus infection. Viral pink eye is usually associated with more of a watery discharge, not green or yellow in color, and is frequently associated with viral "cold-like" symptoms. The eyelids may be swollen. Sometimes looking at bright lights is painful. While viral pink eye, may not require an antibiotic, the doctor should see the child, as occasionally this form of pink eye can be associated with infection of the cornea, (the clear portion of the front of the eyeball). This infection must be correctly detected and treated. Viral pink eye is highly contagious.

Dr. Alan Meerow provides the following from Betrock's Guide to the Landscape Palms . (YOU SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK)
" Pink rot or Gliocladium blight . This fungal disease is a serious problem on Chamaedorea species and areca palms in Florida, and kentias, majesty, queen, date and the native Washingtonia filifera palms in California. The causal agent is not active at temperatures above 85° F, thus it is primarily a winter disease in Florida, while remaining active most of the year in coastal California. Oozing lesions occur on the stems, and leaves turn brown and droop. The fungus produces salmon-pink, powdery fruiting bodies. The disease is easily spread if affected leaves are pulled off the plant prematurely.  Scotts FungoFlo and Mancozeb fungicides provide good control."

    PINK SNOW MOLD ON TURFGRASS Microdochium nivale F A C T S H E E T
    Introduction
Winter diseases of turfgrasses are often associated with melting snow or cold, wet periods. Bluegrasses ( Poa sp.), fescues ( Festuca sp.), and ryegrasses ( Lolium sp.)may be attacked, but bentgrasses ( Agrostis palistris ) are most susceptible. Two diseases, Typhula blight (gray snow mold) and Pink snow mold, are common in New York, and may occur singly or side-by-side. Since different fungicides may be used to control each of these diseases, it is necessary to distinguish between them.
    Symptoms
The fungus that causes Pink Snow Mold produces roughly circular bleached patches up to 60 cm in diameter. Often the mycelium of the fungus is readily visible. In contrast to Gray Snow Mold , however, a pinkish cast to the symptomatic area might be observed under wet conditions. Moreover, no tan sclerotia are associated with the diseased plant tissue as seen in Gray Snow Mold. This disease can become severe when turf is subjected to prolong periods of cool, wet weather from early autumn to late spring, and does not require snow cover to develop. A severe infection by M. nivale

This is a group meant to support Christians, or their loved ones, who suffer mental disorders ranging from, say, Depression through Bipolar to Schizophrenia.
Bear in mind that any disorder can, at times, be equally disabilitating and cries out for some support especially by or from those who have been or are going through the same dark valley. As a group of Christians, we see our role to simply pray for the person in intercession with Jesus as Paul said when he advised Christians to comfort one another. Naturally, we encourage other talk and exchange of ideas and experiences outside that of mental disorders trying not to offend with intent.
This, of course, can best be achieved via good thought before replying and obeying the usual written and unwritten rules of what might be termed loosely as netetiquette. Keep in mind that those of us who are suffering from a disorder such as Bipolar may be in a downswing when we might be tempted to write something we regret later. No one can stop another from writing in such a way, but those of us who are not in a valley should try to understand and help . I can testify that the people already on here have been that way toward me which is an attitude of forgiveness and patience that Jesus asked us to display.
