March 2003
Pink Disease of Pineapple Clarence I. Kado University of California Department of Plant Pathology One Shields Ave Davis, CA 95616 Contact: cikado@ucdavis.edu Next to mangos and bananas, pineapples are the third most consumed fruit worldwide. Diseases of pineapple [ Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] are therefore economically important in the production of fresh and canned fruit products. The pink disease of pineapple represents one of the most perplexing problems of the pineapple canned-fruit industry. The disease is virtually asymptomatic in the field. Pink disease symptoms are primarily recognized when the diseased fruit is canned. The heating process required for canning causes the formation of red and rusty red colored fruit slices that were processed from diseased fruits. Such blemished canned fruits are not marketable. Pink disease represents one of the most important and challenging diseases of pineapple. History Pink disease was originally described in 1915 in Hawaii (6). The pathogen responsible for causing pink disease remained obscure and the nature of the pink color formation of the pineapple fruit tissue was not understood. A myriad of bacteria associated with the pineapple plant, many of which originated from the surrounding soil, made identifying the primary cause of the disease extremely difficult. The biochemical basis of the disease was thought to be complex and difficult to elucidate, and was therefore left uncharacterized. Attempts at identifying the pathogen led to implicating several distinct bacteria as the causal agents of pink disease (5,10).

The most commonly used product containing mercury WAS teething powder, but other products frequently used on babies also contained mercury. The symptoms include weepy red rash, peeling skin, lethargy, anaemia, sensitivity to light, respiritory distress and general ill health. About 25% of babies who got Pink Disease died. After it was discovered that mercury was the cause of Pink Disease in 1947, mercury was removed from all teething powders and Pink Disease became rare. An information gathering exercise by the Pink Disease Support Group has revealed a higher than average incidence auto-immune disorders, Bronchiectasis, Solar Urticaria, chemical sensitivities, allergies, eye and mouth problems, infertility, co-ordination difficulties, poor health, and a proneness to emotional and psychiatric disorders.

ABOUT THE PINK DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP
The Pink Disease Support Group was founded by Heather Thiele in 1989. Heather's aim was to collect information regarding Pink Disease, provide information and support to other survivors of Pink Disease, and to publicize the health problems associated with Post Pink Disease Syndrome. The group also provides quarterly newsletters, email chat groups for those with Pink Disease and/or bronchiectasis, and is continuing to research Post Pink Disease Syndrome, and Pink Disease itself.

Plant Pathology, University of California, Davis, CA 95616. Phytopathology 87:S80. Publication no. P-1997-0569-AMA. We have previously identified and characterized a gene whose product is responsible for inducing the pink disease of pineapple (Appl. Environ. Microbiol 63:71, 1997). This gene, designated encodes glucose dehydrogenase. Genetic and biochemical analyses have identified a second gene whose nucleotide sequence is 70% homologous to A combination of the products from both genes contributes to the intense pink color reaction in pineapple. is regulated by a 33 kDa protein encoded by gdhR, which confers both positive and negative regulatory action in the presence or absence of the inducer glucose. The amino acid sequence of the GdhR protein shows strong similarities to the AraC family of transcriptional regulators. Following induction of the gdh genes, the oxidation of glucose results in the generation of electrons whose transfer is mediated by the

Background: Now a rare disease, acrodynia (painful extremities) primarily affects young children. The symptoms of irritability, photophobia, pink discoloration of the hands and feet, and polyneuritis can be attributed to chronic exposure to mercury. Pathophysiology: The most frequent sources of mercury prior to the legislated removal of the heavy metal from these preparations were calomel-containing anthelminthics, laxatives, diaper rinses, teething powders, fungicides in paint, repeated gamma-globulin injections, termite-protected wood (mercury bichloride), watch batteries (ie, via ingestion), and mercurial antibacterial ointments. This legislation corresponded to the virtual disappearance of acrodynia. Present-day cases reveal more novel exposure, such as mercuric oxide used to treat eyelid mites. Some have suggested the disease may represent a delayed allergic or hypersensitivity reaction because not all persons exposed to mercurial compounds develop the disease. Because the metal can be stored in the body to some extent and intolerance may develop long after exposure, morbid symptoms may appear weeks or months after the drug administration (ie, exposure), with its cause escaping recognition. The deleterious effects of relatively small doses of mercury on the nervous system that are sometimes seen in the course of acrodynia add to the acrodynic reaction. In acrodynia, no reflex dilatation of the peripheral vessels occurs in response to heat. Vasoconstriction is abolished only when the nerve supply to the arterioles is interrupted.

2. SYMPTOMS
2.1 Symptoms in chronic inorganic Hg-intoxication.
The heavy, mostly occupational, chronic inorganic mercury intoxication has been described as having a triad of symptoms:
  • 1) Tremor (or more wide: neurological symptoms)
  • 2) Gingivitis / stomatisis (or more wide: local oral symptoms)
  • 3) Erethismus (or more wide: psychiatric symptoms)
Tremor and gingivitis are not always present and usually not in milder forms. Tremor can cause alteration of the handwriting. The tremor is usually an intentional tremor. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gingiva (gum). The Erethismus (from Greek; excite) is a pathologically increased excitability . Erethism is usually the first symptom to develop. It goes along with some or many of the following symptoms;
  • irritability,
  • outbursts of temper,
  • stress intolerance,
  • decreased simultaneous capacity,
  • increased sensitivity to sounds and light,
  • resentment of criticism,
  • loss of self-confidence,
  • timidity,
  • excessive shyness

In the English-speaking world the commonest source of the mercury was teething powders, which were widely available and advertised with increasing sophistication.
