Pierre Robin Syndrome
Pierre-Robin Syndrome; Robin Syndrome, Pierre; Syndrome, Pierre Robin; Syndrome, Pierre-Robin An autosomal recessive disorder characterized by brachygnathia and cleft palate , often associated with glossoptosis, backward and upward displacement of the larynx , and angulation of the manubrium sterni. Cleft palate makes sucking and swallowing difficult, permitting easy access of fluids into the larynx . It may appear in several syndromes or as an isolated hypoplasia. (Dorland, 27th ed)

The National Craniofacial Association P. O. Box 11082 * Chattanooga, TN 37401 Pierre Robin What is Pierre Robin? Pierre Robin is not a syndrome or a disease. It is usually referred to as Pierre Robin Sequence, although it is also know as "Pierre Robin Malformation Sequence", "Robin Anomalad", and "Cleft Palate, Micrognathia and Glossoptosis." It is the name given to the following birth defects if they appear together:
  • small lower jaw (micrognathia) a tongue which tens to ball up at the back of the mouth and fall back towards the throat (glossoptosis) breathing problems cleft palate may or may not be present
Why did this happen? Doctos do no know exactly why Pierre Robin occurs. They do not believe it is the result of anything the mother did or did not do during pregnancy. Will this happen to children I have in the future? Pierre Robin does not tend to run in families. The chances of you having another child with Pierre Robin are very small. What kinds of problems could my child have? In addition to the physical characteristics common to Pierre Robin, your child may have the following problems:

91. Welcome To The UC Davis Children's Hospital Cleft & Craniofacial Program
If you or your baby have pierre robin sequence as part of a syndrome, there is an increased risk to have other features associated with that syndrome.
http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/cleft/craniofacial/guide/about/pierrerobin.html
Home Craniofacial Anomalies About Craniofacial Anomalies Team Approach to Care ... Scheduling an Appointment Pierre Robin sequence is a combination of problems that begins during pregnancy with micrognathia (small jaw). If the jaw is small, there is often not enough room for the tongue to lie flat in the mouth, so it rests at the back of the mouth (this is called glossoptosis). When the tongue rests at the back of the mouth, it may prevent the palate (roof of the mouth) from closing, resulting in a cleft palate (cleft lip is not usually associated with Pierre Robin). If a child has a cleft palate this is usually repaired between the ages of 12 and 18 months. Isolated Pierre Robin sequence is often not a lifelong condition. The jaw of an affected child is often able to grow and catch up to normal size. In fact, many children have a completely normal profile by the time they start school. Isolated Pierre Robin sequence does not affect any other part of the body. A baby with isolated Pierre Robin sequence is at no greater risk than any other child for other problems, including learning difficulties. If a baby just has Pierre Robin sequence, there is only a small chance that the parents, other family members, or indeed the baby later in life will have another baby with Pierre Robin sequence. The chances of it happening again if you are the affected baby or the parents of that baby, is thought to be between 1 and 5%. Conversely, there is a 95-99% chance that it will not happen again. The risk to other family members is smaller still.

What are the Special Concerns with Pierre Robin? The infant with Pierre Robin Sequence will get better over time. While we wait for your baby to grow stronger, certain supportive care measures will be required. The most important aspect of care for your baby is to assure that breathing is adequate. Various supports for opening the breathing passages may be necessary. These include a soft plastic tube placed into the windpipe, a tube through the nostril past the back of the tongue, and positioning the baby on the abdomen or side. Most care, including diaper changes, feedings, and baths, will be done while your baby is lying on the tummy.
How Will My Baby Eat?
How Long Will My Baby Be in the Hospital? The length of the hospital stay depends upon how severe the breathing and feeding problems are. The infants must have their breathing monitored until obstructions are no longer as frequent or severe as in the immediate newborn period. Your baby may be discharged with the feeding tube in place. You will be taught how to manage the tube and the bottle feedings and will have plenty of time to practice. Your baby will also go home with a monitor which will sound an alarm if your baby has trouble breathing while at home.
If your infant is among the small number of infants who require surgical intervention this could be accomplished by a gradual lengthening of the mandible utilizing a procedure known as distraction.

Health Conditions and Diseases Rare Disorders Pierre Robin Syndrome Music: The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour
Music: Les Tres Riches Heures du Moyen Age: a Medieval Journey - I have quite a number of CDs with Medieval Age polyphony, byzantine chant and renaissance music, but this collection goes beyond what could usually be expected from such boxsets. I'd highly recommend it to all.
Toy: Teen Titans 5" Massive Figure: Action Sound Robin - My son loves these characters from the new version of Teen Titans on Cartoon Network. One issue I have with the toy is that the voice is not the same as from the cartoon. My son noticed immediately that the voice wasn't "teenage" sounding at all, more like a 35 year old man. And the pieces that come with the toy are hard to snap into Robin's hands. Other than that, my son loves that character so much nothing else mattered. Robin's legs, arms, hands, and head move really well, so the construction itself is great. The price is fine too.
Toy: Batman 6" 2-Pack Figure: Batman and Robin - And of course when my littlest looked at it....he HAD to have it. They are great toys, perfect for his little hands! He will not let his older brother or older sister touch them. He is super huge into batman. We didn't however pay the 11 or so dollars for them. We paid 7.95 for it. Great TOYS!!!!!And my son also LOVES the Robin, it is the only Robin that he has!
