Snoring What a simple, funny thing that snoring is. Kids think that it is something funny that daddy does. Wives, may even joke to their friends about how loud their husbands snore. It affects approximately 44% of men and 30% of women. The snoring sound occurs when there is upper airway resistance that is caused by the narrowing of the airway passage between the free edge of the soft palate and the back of the tongue. The free edge of the soft palate will vibrate as the air passes over it causing the snoring sound. While most snoring is normal, there is one kind of snoring that can have serious effects...... Sleep Apnea . Sleep apnea can have several different symptoms and can cause many problems. It can even be fatal, if left untreated, especially a particular form referred to as Pickwickian Syndrome The Pickwickian syndrome may be defined as hypoventilation Go here and take our Sleep Quiz to see if you are at risk for sleep apnea.

Snoring is not a laughing matter. You or your spouse may be suffering from a sleep-related breathing disorder. For more than 16 years, Community Hospital's Sleep Lab has been available for the testing and treatment of three major sleep disorders - sleep apnea, Pickwickian Syndrome and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome.
These conditions are potentially life-threatening and can cause extreme daytime fatigue. Sleep-related breathing conditions can steal hours of productive sleep away every night. These conditions are also known to increase the risk of car accidents and emotional distress.

2.1. History of sleep apnea among children
Charles Dickens was probably the first to describe the features of sleep apnea in his famous comic narrative The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (4). The fat boy Joe was snoring heavily, he was falling constantly asleep and was described as having slow perception. Damn that boy...! In 1889, William Hill (5) recognized the symptoms of the syndrome, describing the stupid lazy-looking kid who frequently suffers from headaches at school, breathes through his mouth instead of his nose, snores and is restless at night. He speculated that some of their backwardness was secondary to some hampering of the cerebral functions rather than deafness. Hill also found adenotonsillectomy to be helpful for these children. In 1965 Menashe et al.

Sue Kurucz and Rita Shaughnessy prepared the previous editions on which this edition is based. While there is no single correct method for conducting a MEDLINE search, following some guidelines will make for more satisfactory results. Underlying MEDLINE are the Medical Subject Headings, MeSH for short, which give it structure and make searching more effective. MeSH has several features accessible via all good interfaces to MEDLINE. Watch for these features on the interface you use to enhance your searches. With MeSH, a searcher can create a powerful and unambiguous query. 3.1. What’s In MEDLINE MEDLINE is produced by the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland. MEDLARS is the name of the system used to produce and search MEDLINE and some 50 other NLM databases. Some 3,700 international biomedical journals are indexed by MEDLINE. 31,000 articles are added each month. Currently, MEDLINE contains over 8 million citations. MEDLINE begins with 1966. On some systems, it is cut into several pieces. For example, on NLM’s own system, there are six parts:

he weekend quiet of the ICU was broken by the familiar loud series of beeps and buzzes. The respiratory therapist looked at her watch. ''He's not going to make it for even 10 minutes today.'' She strode quickly into the room. A young man lay in the bed surrounded by equipment. His face gleamed with sweat; his large abdomen heaved. A monitor showed that his heart was beating rapidly. His breaths were fast and harsh-sounding as he struggled to get air through the ''trach'' the white plastic tube that protruded from his throat. His wife looked up at us, tired, worried. Advertisement The respiratory therapist moved quickly to reattach the man to the ventilator, which immediately took over his breathing. We had been trying, once again, to see if the young man could be weaned from the vent if he could breathe without the help of the machine on which he had depended since he came to the hospital a few weeks earlier. ''I can't breathe,'' he whispered the day he arrived at the emergency room. He'd had a cold and a cough, but now he felt out of breath. ''Like I ran up the stairs,'' he gasped, ''but all the time.'' He had no fevers, no chills; just a headache and this difficulty breathing. And he was tired, really tired. He hadn't slept well for several months. But these last few days, he couldn't stay awake. ''I couldn't even drive here today,'' he admitted softly.

Sleep Apnea Pickwickian Syndrome Music: Stockholm Syndrome - Ok Backyard Babies have not put out a bad CD yet and this proves it this CD is awsome. I listen to it all the time it's spinning in my stereo right now. This just proves that America can't do music right so we have to count on Sweden. Also the song Friends is amazing it is one of the coolest songs ever. So get this CD and if you like them check out Hardcore Superstar another awsome Swedish band.
Music: Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome - Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome is definately not just a sequel to Mothership Connection; this is the pinnacle of p-funk, both more laidback and in-yo-face than Mothership and Motorbooty. And it's not so much anti-disco as...totally alien. This is where Dr Funkenstein and the boys really went out of this world into their own parallel universe. Bop Gun is the simplest and deadliest groove you'll ever hear - originally Bootsy's, but here played by Cordell Mosson I think. Listen to the abstract weirdness of Sir Nose and Funkentelechy. And the classic doowop/horny horns ballad Wizard of Finance. And to top it all of the indestructable Flash Light. Essential stuff.
