Eating Disorders may or may not be present in a person with phobias, and phobias may or may not be present in a person with an Eating Disorder. Intense Fear.... shaking.... can't breath.... can't move.... sweating.... panic.... voices of self-defeat... This describes just some of the symptoms one can feel confronted with the object, event or emotion that creates the phobia for an individual. A phobia is defined as an intense or unrealistic fear, and when confronted with that fear it can cause panic attacks, pounding heartbeat, feelings of nausea, sweaty palms, and rapid breathing. It is important to keep in mind that there may be common traits amongst some Phobias and Eating Disorders, but that it IS NOT a generalized rule that all people with an Eating Disorder suffer from a Phobia, or that all Phobia victims suffer from an Eating Disorder. There are three types of phobias: Agoraphobia: This is the fear of leaving a safe place, such as home It is interesting to point out that a number of people suffering with Eating Disorders can display symptoms of Agoraphobia. It isn't uncommon for those with Anorexia, Bulimia and Compulsive Overeating to have an intense fear of eating in public under a watchful eye of others, and often time an isolationistic type of behavior can sets in, where they will increasingly avoid such situations where they must leave the "safety" of home.

I don't have a problem with elevators or walk-in closets, but I do sometimes get panicky when I can't get out of a sweater. I think that's pretty normal, though. Happens to Navy SEALs all the time. Anyhow: did claustrophobes ever make couch forts as a kid? Maybe they made couch tennis courts. Or couch pastures. "That cushion over there is a hillock. That one's a sheep. Whee!" C- Hydrophobia Unfortunately, a little research tells me that hydrophobia the fear of water is typically a fear of deep water you can drown in, not the fear of water in its many forms. I was all prepared to speculate on the efficacy of substituting sugar-free Kool Aid for water in all cases including hygeine and engine maintenance, and whether it included a fear of ice during power outages. But that's all ruined, it's just the boring old fear that you'll drown. Blast you, reasearch! Blast you!

Are you afraid?
by Debbi Marco A phobia is a really strong fear of an object, animal or situation. Many of you may have no idea why you have these fears. The most common phobias are fear of the dark, fear of spiders and fear of heights.
Causes
No one is really sure what causes somebody to have a phobia. Some phobias are just a result of the way your brain works, while other phobias can be caused by particular events Famous people have phobias, too. Tennis star Andre Agassi is said to be scared of spiders, while superstar Michael Jackson is scared of flying in aeroplanes If something horrible has happened to you, your mind may react by developing a fear about it that makes you feel panicky - in other words, a phobia. For example, if you'd been playing one day and got stuck in a small space and couldn't get out until someone found you, you might develop claustrophobia (a fear of closed-in spaces).
The word phobia comes from the ancient Greek word for fear
What you might feel:
  • Difficulty breathing Sweating Shaking Your heart beating faster
Cures
Phobias can just go away. If you were frightened of the dark when you were younger, you might simply grow used to it as you get older.

Phobia and Fear? "How to be Free from Phobia and Fear

Have you experienced phobia or fear? Or have you been diagnosed with this disorder? While you may or may not know the technical definition of these disorders, if you do have them there is one thing that you know for sure. You know how phobia and fear feels in your body. And it's no fun. I want you to know that there is hope . There are answers even when everything else you have tried hasn't worked. If you suffer from phobia and fear, you probably don't want to talk about it or want people to know that you have this disorder. Why? We both know the answer to that question. First, deep down inside you may feel that there is something "wrong" with you - that you're different. And out of control at times. That because you experienced phobia or fear that you may be defective in some way that can never be fixed. Second, somewhere inside you may feel that no one really understands you and how you feel. No matter how compassionate, understanding or competent a friend or therapist may be, you know that they haven't experienced the feeling and terror that you experience in your body. Definition
A phobia is an intense, unrealistic fear, which can interfere with the ability to socialize, work, or go about everyday life, that is brought on by an object, event or situation.
Description
Just about everyone is afraid of somethingan upcoming job interview or being alone outside after dark. But about 18% of all Americans are tormented by irrational fears that interfere with their daily lives. They are not "crazy"they know full well their fears are unreasonablebut they can not control the fear. These people have phobias. Phobias belong to a large group of mental problems known as "anxiety disorders" that include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder , and post-traumatic stress disorder . Phobias themselves can be divided into three specific types:
  • specific phobias (formerly called "simple phobias")
  • social phobia
  • agoraphobia
Specific phobias As its name suggests, a specific phobia is the fear of a particular situation or object, including anything from airplane travel to dentists. Found in one out of every 10 Americans, specific phobias seem to run in families and are roughly twice as likely to appear in women. If the person rarely encounters the feared object, the phobia does not cause much harm. However, if the feared object or situation is common, it can seriously disrupt everyday life. Common examples of specific phobias, which can begin at any age, include fear of snakes, flying, dogs, escalators, elevators, high places, or open spaces.

phobias. What is a Phobia? A phobia is really an extreme fear about something that is not actually dangerous. How Many People Suffer from phobias?
http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/simplepsych/12.html
PHOBIAS
What is a Phobia?
A phobia is really an extreme fear about something that is not actually dangerous. The stange thing about phobias is that people are usually able to realise that the phobia is not sensible when they are in a safe place, but it doesn't stop the fear when the object or situation that they fear is near.
What Types of Phobia are there?
Phobias are generally classed into 3 different groups:
  • SIMPLE PHOBIAS - could be called a single phobia. Includes things like a fear of flying, heights, spiders and has been known to include seemingly innocent objects like fruit. (Fruit? - Ed)
  • SOCIAL PHOBIAS - these are things to do with situations in public. Includes things like eating or speaking in public and generally leads to the person being afraid that they will do something horrendous or something bad is going to happen which will make other people look on them badly.
  • AGORAPHOBIA - this is often called claustrophobia. Includes things like a fear of enclosed spaces, using buses and trains, even just leaving the house. Agoraphobics often think that if they are put into their feared situation that they will collapse or lose control. Having an escape route generally relieves the situation a little in milder agoraphobics, as indeed it does with Social Phobics.
