Understanding Watchtower Phobias
How and Why the Watchtower Uses Fear to Control Its Members
by Randall Watters Nothing is so much to be feared as fear.
Henry David Thoreau 1817-1862
phobia. [Gr. phobos , fear.] any persistent, irrational, and excessive fear of some particular thing or situation. ( Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary People who have struggled with phobias understand how immune such phobias can be to logical analysis. Like the recurrent nightmare of fleeing a hideous monster, it never seems to sink in that monsters don't exist. The irrational fears continue to plague the victim. While nightmares are transitory and often forgotten in the morning, other fears, some just as potent, lie in the consciousness of people even during their waking hours. Fear of heights, dogs, being closed in a room, etc. regularly traumatize people, affecting their lifestyle. Relatively little attention is given to religious fears, however. It is apparent that manipulative minds can readily distort the scriptures in order to produce feelings of fear, guilt, remorse and even hysteria. The followers of Jim Jones and Ayatollah Khomeini can attest to that. What is surprising is that often the victims are aware of their paranoia and know it to be destructive, but feel powerless to overcome it. This is especially true among Jehovah's Witnesses. Not satisfied with scripture alone, the Watchtower has added much commentary to the Bible, comprising a "Talmud" of rules and prohibitions involving smoking, holidays, etc. which create unnecessary fear of disobedience and finally guilt.

The Introduction Of phobias (Deep Rooted Fears) And Other Development Traits In The Jehovah Witness Child. They were the victims of carefully planted phobias.
http://www.freeminds.org/psych/kidphob.htm
The Introduction Of Phobias (Deep Rooted Fears) And Other Development Traits In The Jehovah Witness Child by Randall Watters Parents obviously have a very powerful influence on their children. Even when they are abusive and insensitive towards their offspring, children still desire whatever vestige of love and approval they can get from their parents, and will often be obedient just to receive attention and care. Understanding this dynamic helps to explain how children growing up in the Watch Tower may be so heavily influenced by the need for approval that they are willing togive up whatever goals or aspirations they may have in order to please their parents, even long after they leave home and/or get married. In order for the indoctrination to be lasting and effective, PHOBIAS (deep-rooted fears) must be introduced to the child in order to "scare" them away from a course contrary to Watch Tower idealology, and the organization is very adept at planting and nuturing these phobias. As in the case of the elder in Korea with the four children (mentioned previously in our first article), the fear may be the threat of being cut off financially as well as losing dad's approval, but it also comes directly from the pages of THE WATCHTOWER in the form of warnings about being in the very last days, and how Jehovah will not look with approval upon those who "squander their time and energies" in non-Kingdom interests. Jehovah thus becomes the all powerful parent who, even if the child's real parents may not be too concerned, will himself cut the child off from his favour and possibility even eternal life. A powerful motovation indeed!

What is a Phobia? A phobia is an excessive and persistent fear of :a situation (e.g., enclosed places, driving, flying, seeing blood, heights) or an object (e.g., animals such as rats, snakes, spiders, dogs, or birds). is generally anticipated harm or danger related to the situation or object (e.g., having an accident while driving, being bitten by a dog), or fear of losing control and having anxiety-related physical sensations (e.g., panicking in an enclosed place, fainting upon seeing blood). The fear is considered excessive because it is out of proportion to the actual level of danger associated with the situation. When an individual with a phobia is exposed to the feared stimulus (the object or the situation) or related cues (things that remind us of the object or situation), an immediate anxiety response is triggered that can sometimes grow into a full-blown panic attack. Consequently, people with phobias either avoid the feared situations or objects or they endure a lot of distress. For example, an individual with a phobia of snakes experiences an anxiety reaction in a number of situation including seeing a snake on television, being outside in grassy or wooded areas where snakes may live, and seeing things that resemble a snake such as a coiled garden hose in the yard.

Fears and Phobias
What is a phobia Special fear of flying section Common phobias How to deal with phobias ... Our Phobia Poll Fears and phobias limit our ability to get the most from life. In some cases they can prevent us living even a relatively normal life. In all cases we can overcome them - not necessarily with 'treatment' but through learning how to manage our own thoughts and feelings.
What is fear?
We feel fearful when we believe we do not have the ability to cope with something. This fear may be grounded in reality, as when we fear being knocked down by a car when trying to cross a busy road. Or the fear may be irrational as when we fear a tiny harmless spider. Many of our fears are a mix of reality and misinterpretation of our ability to cope. When there is a large degree of of misinterpretation it is likely that it is a phobia rather than a fear.

Phobias
Definition
A phobia is an intense but unrealistic fear that can interfere with the ability to socialize, work, or go about everyday life, brought on by an object, event or situation. Description Just about everyone is afraid of something-an upcoming job interview or being alone outside after dark. But about 18% of all Americans are tormented by irrational fears that interfere with their daily lives. They are not "crazy"-they know full well their fears are unreasonablebut they can not control the fear. These people have phobias. Phobias belong to a large group of mental problems known as anxiety disorders that include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Phobias themselves can be divided into three specific types:
  • specific phobias (formerly called "simple phobias") social phobia agoraphobia.
Specific phobias As its name suggests, a specific phobia is the fear of a particular situation or object, including anything from airplane travel to dentists. Found in one out of every 10 Americans, specific phobias seem to run in families and are roughly twice as likely to appear in women. If the person rarely encounters the feared object, the phobia does not cause much harm. However, if the feared object or situation is common, it can seriously disrupt everyday life. Common examples of specific phobias, which can begin at any age, include fear of snakes, flying, dogs, escalators, elevators, high places, or open spaces.
