What is Hypnosis and Trance? Hypnosis is a method of communication that induces a trance or a trance-like state. Trance is a naturally occurring state in which one's attention is narrowly focused and heightened. Most of us are in and out of trances all day long. Anyone who is absorbed in a book or a TV program is in a trance. Attention may be focused either internally (e.g. on thoughts, self-talk, feelings and/or images) or externally (e.g. on a task, book, or movie). The narrowed focus of attention allows other stimuli in the environment to be ignored or blocked out of conscious awareness. Examples of trance states are daydreaming, driving a car, watching TV, and some forms of meditation.

The roller coaster hesitates for a split second at the peak of its steep track after a long, slow climb. You know what's about to happen, and there's no way to avoid it now. Terrified, you grip the handrail, palms sweating, heart racing, and brace yourself for the wild ride down. We've all experienced that sudden rush of fear. What is fear? What causes it? And why do some people seem fearless, seeking out horror flicks, thrill rides, and extreme sports, whereas other people avoid things that trigger any fear reaction? What can people do to conquer fears? What's the difference between fear and anxiety? When is a fear considered a phobia? Read on for the answers to these questions and more. What Is Fear?
Fear is a normal human emotional reaction - it is a built-in survival mechanism with which we are all equipped. Even as babies, we possess the survival instincts necessary to respond when we sense danger. Fear is a reaction to danger that involves the mind and body. Fear serves a protective purpose - signaling us of danger and preparing us to deal with it. A fear reaction happens whenever we sense danger or when we're confronted with something new or unknown that seems potentially dangerous. Fear can be brief - like the startled reaction you have if a balloon unexpectedly pops or if you are surprised by something you didn't expect. This is often over in seconds, as soon as the brain gets enough data to realize there's no danger. If the brain doesn't receive the "all clear" signal, fear can last longer and feel more intense.

Useful Information On Phobias And Panic
(posted by Hopkins Technology)
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration The Varieties of Fear Phobias take many forms. Some people are terrified of dogs, even tiny dogs with wagging tails. Some people stiffen with fright at the mere thought of talking in front of a group. Some can't fly. Some tremble and hide at the crack of thunder. Some can't ride an escalator. Some are struck by panic attacks for no apparent reason. And some never leave their homes. Fears such as these are very common. Millions of Americans are afflicted with phobias or panic disorder. They suffer intensely. To escape their fear, they go to great lengths to avoid the object, place, or situation that provokes it. They change jobs merely to avoid an elevator ride, for example, or cut back their social life. Some wear down their families with their clinging dependency. Nearly all lose out on much of life. Many people to from doctor to doctor seeking cures for the physical symptoms that accompany their phobias. Often, even the doctor fails to recognize that stomach pains, high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, and other symptoms may be related to intense fear. Unless questioned, patients may not think to mention their fears. Doctors may not ask. While the bills keep mounting, the medical condition fails to improve.

What are "The Phobias"? In the anxiety literature, you read about them all the time...." the phobias "... The big problem with using this terminology is that everyone interprets "the phobias" in a different way, and many professionals interpret it only as relating to panic and its associated phobias. It is not accepted scientific practice to be imprecise. It is very important to define terms as precisely as possible. So, when someone uses the phrase "the phobias", ask them just what they mean. Are they talking about agoraphobia Or perhaps specific phobias , such as fear of snakes, claustrophobia, or emetophobia? Or maybe they're also including social phobia (social anxiety disorder).....a completely separate anxiety problem that is the THIRD largest mental health care problem in the world. That is precisely the problem....when someone says they treat "the phobias"

Fighting Phobias,
The Things That Go Bump in the Mind
by Lynne L. Hall From 50 yards away, you see the animal approaching. Silently it watches you as it slinks ever so much closer with each padded step. Stay calm, you tell yourself. There's nothing to fear. But suddenly, panic seizes you in a death grip, squeezing the breath out of you and turning your knees to Jell-O. Your heart starts slam-dancing inside your chest, your mouth turns to cotton, and your palms are so sweaty you'd swear they'd sprung a leak. You'd escape this terrifying confrontation, if only you could make your legs work! Just what is this wild and dangerous animal making you hyperventilate and turning your legs to rubber? A man-eating tiger, hungry for a meal? A lioness bent on protecting her cubs? Guess again. That's Tabby, your neighbor's ordinary house cat, sauntering your way. Ridiculous, right? How can anyone experience so much fear at the sight of such an innocuous animal? If you're one of the thousands who suffer from galeophobiathe fear of catsor any one of hundreds of other phobias, sheer panic at the appearance of everyday objects, situations or feelings is a regular occurrence. Irrational Fears A phobia is an intense, unrealistic fear of an object, an event, or a feeling. An estimated 18 percent of the U.S. adult population suffers from some kind of phobia, and a person can develop a phobia of anythingelevators, clocks, mushrooms, closed spaces, open spaces. Exposure to these trigger the rapid breathing, pounding heartbeat, and sweaty palms of panic.

Phobias:
When Fear is a Disease
Cyro Masci, MD Introduction F
ear is a very ancient and universal emotion in man. It can be defined as the sensation that you are in danger, that something bad is about to happen. Fear is almost always accompanied by a host of physical symptoms which are quite disturbing. When it is not justified by the presence of real danger or threat, or by any rational cause, and when it is also accompanied by a systematic avoidance of the situations which lead to it, then we have what is called a phobia Phobia is actually a kind of panic reaction caused by specific stimuli or situations. There are three basic types of phobia:
  • Agarophobia, literally, it is the irrational fear of the agora (in ancient Greece, this was the place where the market was located), in other words, the generalized fear of places or situations where there is a potential difficulty or embarassment to escape from it, or where help might not be available in case of need. This includes going out of our own's home, travelling without company, or being in the middle of a crowd, standing in queues to leave a place, etc. Social phobia , when the person has a marked and persistent fear of some specific or generalized social situations, such as the shame of misbehaving in front of other people, the fear of participating in group reunions, of starting or maintaining a conversation with strangers, of initiating a romantic encounter, of talking to persons of authority, etc.

A specific phobia, formerly called a simple phobia, is a lasting and unreasonable fear caused by the presence or thought of a specific object or situation that usually poses little or no actual danger. Exposure to the object or situation brings about an immediate reaction, causing the person to endure intense anxiety (nervousness), or to avoid the object or situation entirely. The distress associated with the phobia and/or the need to avoid the object or situation can significantly interfere with the person's ability to function. Adults with a specific phobia recognize that the fear is excessive or unreasonable, yet are unable to overcome it. There are different types of specific phobias, based on the object or situation feared, including:

Animal behaviorism is an infant science, but it has dramatically changed the way many dog owners understand their animals
by Mark Derr

M ANY years ago we had a dog who at age four announced her fear of thunder by trying to launch herself through a second-story window. Over the next eight years her phobia intensified, so that a darkening sky, a backfiring car, or the hum of a distant power saw would send her into jaw-jiggling, saliva-raining frenzy. She demolished doors, tile floors, windows, and the interiors of cars. Veterinarians we consulted recommended tranquilizers; distracting her with play, obedience drills, or music; or confinement ineffectual advice still commonly given to dog owners with fractious pets. Unless we were willing to use them around the clock, tranquilizers were useless. She could focus on nothing but her fear; she ignored music and destroyed a chain-link kennel. She was our albatross, and she was finally euthanized when old age and her phobias left her unable to function. In recent years animal behaviorists have theorized that thunderphobia arises from a hearing impairment, a trauma, or a biochemical imbalance. Nicholas Dodman, the head of the behavior clinic at the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, speculates in

With therapy, almost anyone can get over their phobias. By Carol Sorgen WebMD Feature Archive Reviewed By Michael Smith, MD Refuse to fly? Can't drive across a bridge? Will do anything to avoid speaking in public? You, like millions of others, may be suffering from a phobia. The bad news is as you know all too well that phobias are uncomfortable and can disrupt your life. But the good news is that phobias are not dangerous, and what's more important, they can be cured. In "doctor-speak," a phobia is an irrational or excessive fear of a situation or a particular object, says Michael Kahan, MD, a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of phobias at Hillside Hospital, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York. Being afraid of something is not the same thing as a phobia, says Kahan. "Many people are afraid of snakes, for example, but it's not a phobia if it doesn't interfere with your life or sense of well-being," he explains.
