Table of Contents Conditions Pharyngitis Also Listed As: Signs and Symptoms Causes Risk Factors Diagnosis ... Supporting Research Pharyngitis is inflammation of the back of the throat. This results in a sore throat, which is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. Swallowing can be mildly painful as well. Sore throats, which are often caused by an infection, are very common, especially in children. Signs and Symptoms The symptoms of pharyngitis may include the following:
    • Sore throat Pain when swallowing Fever Enlarged lymph nodes in your neck Runny nose and postnasal drip Headache In rare cases, difficulty breathing
Causes Certain viruses or bacteria can infect your throat and cause it to swell. You can catch such organisms through direct contact with someone who has one of these infections. They are passed via nasal secretions and saliva. Viruses that cause pharyngitis include the common cold, the flu, and mononucleosis (often called "mono"). Bacteria like Group A sterptococcus (commonly known as strep throat) can also cause pharyngitis. Risk Factors
    • Cold and flu seasons Someone living in your house has a sore throat or cold
Diagnosis Your health care provider will check your temperature and examine your throat, sinuses, ears, nose, lungs and neck, including feeling for swollen lymph nodes which may indicate strep throat. A swab from your throat may be taken to test for strep infection. A blood test may be done to check for mononucleosis. If concerned about possible mono, your doctor will also examine your abdomen looking for an enlarged liver or spleen and feel for lymph nodes in your body in places in addition to your neck.

If caused by the group A streptococcus, it is called "strep throat". The chronic form can be caused by a continuing infection of the sinuses , lungs or mouth, or by constant irritation from smoking, breathing heavily polluted air, food allergies or consuming too much alcohol, or by swallowing substances that scald, corrode or scratch the throat. Pharyngitis is a common illness. Even strep throat is usually a self-limiting disease. Controlled trials show that clinical recovery is similar in cases with and without the use of antibiotics. The "streptophobia" associated with the risk of rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is probably unwarranted today, although proper care is still important. Epidemiological surveys demonstrate a correlation between vitamin C deficiency and the development of post-streptococcal consequences. Rheumatic fever is virtually nonexistent in the

Focus IssuesViral Pharyngitis What Is Viral Pharyngitis? Pharyngitis or sore throat may be caused by numerous infections (bacterial and viral) as well as irritants. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and often accompany cold symptoms. Viral pharyngitis is thus a sore throat caused by a virus. Viruses cannot be cured with antibiotics. What are other common causes of sore throats?
    • Low humidity, especially in the winter.
    • Smoking or air pollution.
    • Vocal strain from yelling or talking a lot.
    • Seasonal Allergies - postnasal drainage and mouth breathing often irritates the throat.
    • Apthous ulcer (canker sore).
    • Bacterial infections including Group A Beta-hemolytic Strep and chlamydial infection.
    How is Viral Pharyngitis Diagnosed?
Viral pharyngitis is frequently diagnosed based on symptoms and findings on exam. If indicated, a rapid strep test and/or a throat culture may be done to detect a bacterial strep infection. If I have viral pharyngitis, what can I expect?
Symptoms are often similar to strep throat and include fatigue, body achiness, headaches, nasal congestion, runny nose, postnasal drainage, cough, swollen tender neck glands, and low grade fever. Initial symptoms of sore throat and fatigue usually improve followed by more sinus congestion and drainage. Symptoms usually last 5-7 days with complete improvement by 10 days.

    (Strep throat)
    What is streptococcal pharyngitis?
Streptococcal pharyngitis (sore throat), or "strep throat", is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by the bacteria Streptococci pyogenes , also known as Group A streptococci (GAS). What are the symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis?
The symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis include sore throat, pain on swallowing, fever, swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck, and fatigue. The tonsils are swollen and often covered with pus. The roof of the mouth may have fine red lesions called petechiae. Cough, hoarseness, and runny nose are NOT symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis, but indicate viral upper respiratory infections. It is important to realize that most sore throats are not due to streptococcal infections. When strep throat is accompanied by a red rash and fever, it is called scarlet fever. If left untreated, streptococcal pharyngitis lasts from 2 to 5 days; with antibiotics it lasts about 1-3 days. The rash of scarlet fever fades after several days but can be followed by flaking or peeling skin, especially around the fingertips, 1 to 3 weeks later.

Commonly among adults who live or work in dusty or very dry environments, use their voices excessively, use tobacco or alcohol habitually, or suffer from chronic sinusitis, persistent coughs, or allergies.
Acute pharyngitis may precede the common cold or other communicable diseases. Chronic pharyngitis is commonly an extension of nasopharyngeal obstruction or inflammation. Uncomplicated pharyngitis usually subsides in 3 to 10 days. Cause; In children, it is often caused by streptococcal bacteria. In 90% of cases, pharyngitis occurs as the result of a virus. Symptoms: Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing (swallowing saliva is usually more painful than swallowing food)
Sensation of a lump in the throat
Have the urge to swallow constantly
    Redden, inflamed posterior pharyngeal wall
    Mild fever
    Headache
Muscle and joint pain - especially in bacterial pharyngitis Treatment: Treatment is usually symptomatic - consisting mainly of rest, warm saline gargles, throat lozenges containing a mild anesthetic, plenty of fluids, and analgesics as prescribed by your doctor.
