    The Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Essential Feature The essential feature of the narcissistic personality disorder is a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy (DSM-IV™, 1994, p. 658). Gunderson, et.al, (Livesly, ed., 1995, p. 208) notes that the grandiosity may not be overt or may involve arrogant and haughty behavior. Kantor (1992, pp. 203-204) describes the clinical characteristics of NPD as:
    • inordinate self-pride;
    • self-concern;
    • an exaggeration of the importance of one's experiences and feelings;
    • ideas of perfection;
    • a reluctance to accept blame or criticism;

    NPA Personality Theory Based on Mendelian Genetics Reference to Narcissistic, Obsessive-compulsive Personality and Schizophrenia
    A. M. Benis, Sc.D., M.D. Summary
    NPA Personality Theory
    The NPA theory of personality was developed by the author on the basis of concepts described in a psychoanalytic framework over fifty years ago by Karen Horney. The theory posits three major behavioral traits underlying personality: Narcissism (N), Perfectionism (P) and Aggression (A), leading to the formulation of discrete character types. Each trait is based on a major pleiotropic gene that follows the rules of Mendelian genetics. The mode of transmission of the traits was deduced from archetypal family pedigrees. The traits N and A were found to be high frequency recessive, with P being dominant.
    The theory has the power to explain aspects of personality that previously had seemed intractable to an analytical approach. In particular, it provides anyone the ability to analyze problems of interpersonal relations on the basis of readily identifiable personality types. Quite unexpectedly, it predicts a relationship between infertility (miscarriage and stillbirth) and the personality types of the parents. It also gives insight into the genetic predisposition to

    An Equifinality Model of Borderline Personality Disorder by Joseph Santoro, Ph.D., Michael Tisbe, M.D, Michael Katsarakes
    Supervised Lifestyles Behavioral Heath Systems

    Borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects as many as six million Americans. It accounts for about 25% of all psychiatric hospitalizations. As many as thirteen percent of males and seven percent of females commit suicide (Stone, 1990). Approximately, 69% of people with BPD are also substance abusers (Miller et al., 1993). The causes of BPD are not well understood. Therapist folklore often labels people with BPD as difficult and treatment-resistant patients. This article outlines a clinical model of BPD. The model is based upon the clinical practice of the authors and the research literature concerning the correlates of BPD. The model identifies the roles played by traumatic environmental conditioning, its effect on neurobiological processes, and biological vulnerabilities in the development of BPD. In this regard, the model postulates two factors which can lead, singly or in combination with equifinality, to BPD: early childhood Psychotraumatic Stress (PTS) exposure (Factor I) and Biologic Vulnerability (BV) (Factor II). Equifinality is a systems theory concept (Miller, 1978) which means "that a final state of any living system [borderline personality disorder] may be reached from different initial conditions [Factor I, Factor II or both] and in different ways [antecedent or consequent biological and family system dysfunction]."
