Question: Do narcissists also suffer from eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa? Answer: Patients suffering from eating disorders binge on food and sometimes are both anorectic and bulimic. This is an impulsive behaviour as defined by the DSM (particularly in the case of BPD and to a lesser extent of Cluster B disorders in general). Some patients develop these disorders as a way to self-mutilate. It is a convergence of two pathological behaviours: self-mutilation and an impulsive (rather, compulsive or ritualistic) behaviour. The key to improving the mental state of patients with dual diagnosis (a personality disorder plus an eating disorder) lies in concentrating upon their eating and sleeping disorders.

Powered by groups.yahoo.com Do all personality disorders have a common psychodynamic source?
To what stage of personal development can we attribute this common source?
Can the paths leading from that common source to each of these disorders be charted?
Will positive answers to the above endow us with a new understanding of these pernicious conditions? Acute Anger Anger is a compounded phenomenon. It has dispositional properties, expressive and motivational components, situational and individual variations, cognitive and excitatory interdependent manifestations and psychophysiological (especially neuroendocrine) aspects. From the psychobiological point of view, it probably had its survival utility in early evolution, but it seems to have lost a lot of it in modern societies. Actually, in most cases it is counterproductive, even dangerous. Dysfunctional anger is known to have pathogenic effects (mostly cardiovascular). Pathological anger is neither coherent, not externally induced. It emanates from the inside and it is diffuse, directed at the "world" and at "injustice" in general. The patient does identify the IMMEDIATE cause of the anger. Still, upon closer scrutiny, the cause is likely to be found lacking and the anger excessive, disproportionate, incoherent. To refine the point: it might be more accurate to say that the personality disordered is expressing (and experiencing) TWO layers of anger, simultaneously and always. The first layer, the superficial anger, is indeed directed at an identified target, the alleged cause of the eruption. The second layer, however, is anger directed at himself. The patient is angry at himself for being unable to vent off normal anger, normally. He feels like a miscreant. He hates himself. This second layer of anger also comprises strong and easily identifiable elements of frustration, irritation and annoyance.

Borderline Personality Disorder. The DIB was revised in 1989 to sharpen its ability to differentiate between BPD and other personality disorders.
http://www.palace.net/~llama/psych/bpd.html
Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most controversial diagnoses in psychology today. Since it was first introduced in the DSM, psychologists and psychiatrists have been trying to give the somewhat amorphous concepts behind BPD a concrete form. Kernberg's explication of what he calls Borderline Personality Organization is the most general, while Gunderson, though a psychoanalyst, is considered by many to have taken the most scientific approach to defining BPD. The Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines and the DIB-Revised were developed from research done by Gunderson, Kolb, and Zanarini. Finally, there is the "official" DSM-IV definition. Some researchers, like Judith Herman, believe that BPD is a name given to a particular manifestation of post-traumatic stress disorder: in Trauma and Recovery, she theorizes that when PTSD takes a form that emphasizes heavily its elements of identity and relationship disturbance, it gets called BPD; when the somatic (body) elements are emphasized, it gets called hysteria, and when the dissociative/deformation of consciousness elements are the focus, it gets called DID/MPD. Others believe that the term "borderline personality" has been so misunderstood and misused that trying to refine it is pointless and suggest instead simply scrapping the term.

Max and Oscar are missing. =( - See thier missing posters by clicking on their names. **NOTE** It's been a while since I have worked on my site - I am sorry about that. I am planning on removing broken links and working on things over the next month so hopefully things here will be brighter by the end of the summer. I have taken a chance and have created a page here all about me. This site came in to creation in several ways. I am a survivor of child abuse, both physical and sexual abuse as well as the emotional abuse that came hand in hand with what they did to me. I also am healing and surviving from a sexual assault. After the assault, I spent many hours searching the web for information on how to survive this horrible thing that had happened. I found lots of information on prevention and lots of technical things but not a whole lot on surviving. This was back in late 1995. So, when I found geocities and saw that they offered a free web page service, I was excited. It gave me the possiblity to create the type of site that I had been searching for. So, Mollykat's Resources for Survivors was created.

Personality Disorders Foundation What are Personality Disorders? Personality Disorders are generalized, inflexible patterns of inner experience and behavior. These patterns significantly differ from cultural expectations, and begin in adolescence or early adulthood. Personality Disorders are long-term, maladaptive patterns of perception, emotional regulation, anxiety, and impulse control. They can lead to enormous personal and societal costs, including lost productivity, hospitalizations, significant unhappiness, imprisonment, and suicide. Personality Disorders are among the least understood and recognized disorders in both psychiatry and general medical care. Ironically, as a group of disorders, they are among the most common of the severe mental disorders, and occur frequently with other illnesses (e.g., substance use disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders). Many imprisoned individuals also have a diagnosable personality disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV, American Psychiatric Association, 1994), organizes personality disorders into three groups, with three or four disorders per group: Eccentric Personality Disorders: Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2 percent of adults, mostly young women. There is a high rate of self-injury without suicide intent, as well as a significant rate of suicide attempts and completed suicide in severe cases.

37. Activity Oriented Group Therapy For Children With ADD/HD At Quest Therapeutic Da
A day camp in Huntington Beach, California which provides group therapy in an activity oriented environment for children ages 614 with ADD, ADHD and certain other forms of learning and personality disorders. Supervised by Dr. Linda C. Sanicola. Three, four, and five week sessions.
http://www.QuestCampHB.com
THE QUEST PROGRAM: Quest's therapeutic program uniquely combines behavioral methods, group therapy, recreational activities and instructional athletics to assist each child in developing new skills and eliminating those actions which create difficulties for them. By observing a child in a naturalistic setting, Quest staff are able to intervene as problems occur. Issues are presented to the child in a positive manner, helping the child to see the problem and possible positive solutions. Through instruction in athletics, each child builds skills and self-esteem. This enables them to participate with peers more effectively and successfully. Quest campers range in age from 6 to 14 years old. The typical Quest camper has above average intelligence and many strengths. They may experience frustration in their lives and poor self-esteem due to their perception of failure and lack of acceptance from peers. They might be kids that struggle in finding stable, good friends, in achieving consistently the goals they desire, a kid who comes home from school upset because of a sense of rejection or failure. Campers may have diagnoses of Attention Deficit Disorder, learning disabilities, adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression, or self-esteem problems. Children with more complex problems are not appropriate for Quest. Our campers do not look or act differently than other children. Problems they experience are more subtle yet significant in their effect on the child and the family. Without intervention, these children are at higher risk for more serious problems in the future.

"…enduring patterns of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and oneself … exhibited in a wide range of important social and personal contexts."
Characteristics common to all personality disorders Patients with personality disorders share certain characteristics:
1. Except those suffering from the Schizoid or the Avoidant Personality Disorders, they are insistent and demand preferential and privileged treatment. They complain about numerous symptoms, though they frequently second guess the diagnosis and disobey the physician, his treatment recommendations and instructions.
2. They feel unique, are affected with grandiosity and a diminished capacity for empathy. Consequently, they regard the physician as inferior to them, alienate him and bore him with their self-preoccupation.
