Encyclopedia Index P Home Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Index P Pericarditis Definition Pericarditis is an inflammation of the two layers of the thin, sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart. This membrane is called the pericardium, so the term pericarditis means inflammation of the pericardium. Description Pericarditis is fairly common. It affects approximately one in 1,000 people. The most common form is caused by infection with a virus. People in their 20s and 30s who have had a recent upper respiratory infection are most likely to be affected, along with men aged 20-50. One out of every four people who have had pericarditis will get it again, but after two years these relapses are less likely. Causes and symptoms The viruses that cause pericarditis include those that cause influenza polio , and rubella (German measles ). In children, the most common viruses that cause pericarditis are the adenovirus and the cocksackievirus (which is most likely to affect children during warmer weather). Although pericarditis is usually caused by a virus, it also can be caused by an injury to the heart or it can follow a heart attack . It may also be caused by certain inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus . Bacteria, fungi, parasites

[Return to main] Inflammation of the Heart Myocarditis/Pericarditis What is myocarditis or pericarditis? How does inflammation affect the heart? Is it harmful? congestive heart failure (the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to meet the demands of the body) may result. How is the diagnosis made? Diagnosis of myocarditis is hard because it looks like so many other diseases. The diagnosis is made first by the history and a physical examination by a doctor. Symptoms of fever (a common symptom with inflammation) rash, diarrhea, fatigue, abnormal heart rhythms, shortness of breath, chest pain, and lightheadedness or fainting can occur Some of these are symptoms of congestive heart failure, however, there may be other causes of these. The physical examination may show a fast heart rate, abnormal blood pressure, fast breathing rate, an abnormal examination of the heart and lungs, and sometimes an enlarged liver. Very few laboratory or blood tests will give a quick answer. Special tests such as an X-ray of the chest, electrocardiogram and echocardiogram may help with the diagnosis. Sometimes blood tests are obtained to help show the presence or cause of inflammation.

Overview Pericarditis is a swelling and irritation of the pericardium, the thin, two-layered, membranous sac that surrounds your heart. This condition causes chest pain and other signs and symptoms, which may develop suddenly. Under normal circumstances, the pericardial sac contains a small amount of lubricating fluid. But when the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid in the sac may increase. Doctors use the term pericardial effusion to describe this fluid collection. The collection of excess fluid in the pericardium can place pressure on your heart. This can squeeze your heart and interfere with its ability to fill adequately and pump blood efficiently, a disorder known as cardiac tamponade.

This publication contains information to help you understand and live a heart-healthy lifestyle. Published for friends of the Texas Heart Institute. Pericarditis The pericardium is a thin, sac-like covering (a membrane) that surrounds your heart. The outer layer of the pericardium surrounds the roots of your heart's major blood vessels. Ligaments attach this layer to your spinal column, diaphragm, and other parts of your body. The inner layer of the pericardium is attached to the heart muscle. A coating of fluid separates the two layers of membrane, letting the heart move as it beats, yet still be attached to your body. Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium. When pericarditis occurs, the amount of fluid between the two layers of the pericardium increases. This increased fluid presses on the heart and restricts its pumping action. What causes pericarditis?

Pericardium
Constrictive Pericarditis
Pericardium Constrictive pericarditis is a chronic form of pericarditis in which the pericardium is rigid, thickened, scarred, and less elastic than normal. The pericardium cannot stretch as the heart beats, which prevents the chambers of the heart from filling. A direct consequence is a reduced cardiac output (the amount of blood pumped by the heart). The blood backs up behind the heart, resulting in symptoms of heart failure.

Pericarditis is inflammation or infection of the pericardium, the thin sac (membrane) that surrounds the heart. There is a small amount of fluid between the inner and outer layers of the pericardium. When the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid between its two layers increases, compressing the heart and interfering with the heart's ability to function properly. What causes pericarditis? In children, pericarditis is most likely to occur following surgery to repair congenital (present at birth) heart defects or acquired heart disease. However, other causes may include the following:
  • infection (viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic) chest trauma or injury connective tissue disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus)

What is pericarditis?
What is pericarditis, its treatment and diagnosis.
Pericarditis is a condition that is caused when the linning surrounding the heart (the Pericardium) is inflamed. This sac has two thin layers of membranes. Normally a very small amount of fluid is between these two layers, providing support, lubrication and insulation for the heart. But when the Pericardium becomes inflamed the fluid between the layers increases making it difficult for the heart to function properly. This puts undue pressure on the heart and it's surrounding blood vessels. It decreases the amount of blood the heart is able to pump. The most serious side effect of this is called Cardiac Tamponade. When this occurs the hearts inability to provide adequate blood flow, deprives the bodies major organs and tissues of oxygen. This restriction is severe and the rapid symptoms of heart failure causes a medical emergency. The symptoms of Pericarditis appear quickly and some times without warning. Some people that develop Pericarditis have a form of acute or recurring Pericarditis, where they recover only to develop it again and again. When someone develops chronic Pericarditis the heart will sometimes scar and constrict causing a thickening of the pericardium which eventually interferes with the hearts ability to pump properly. This type of constrictive Pericarditis causes symptoms to not be as severe. Usually there is no chest pain. bodyOffer(26223) Symptoms of Pericarditis will include but are not limited to: Fever, chills, chest pain, weakness, sweating (especially at night), achy muscles or joints, fast or labored breathing, shortness of breath, loss of appetite and weight loss. There is no one indicator for this disease. Some people describe the chest pain as a crushing sensation while others say it feels sharp or piercing. Pain can begin anywhere but usually it starts in the middle of the chest and moves to the left over the heart. Most people think that they are having a heart attack and in the truest sense they are. Pain may radiate down the left shoulder or the back of the neck. It may also worsen when you inhale or swallow. And some times it is lessened when sitting or standing and leaning slightly forward.
