Pericarditis is an inflammation of the lining sac (pericardium) which surrounds the heart. It can be associated with a collection of fluid (pericardial effusion) in the space between the heart and the pericardium. Pericarditis accounts for approximately 1 in 1,000 hospital admissions. It is found in about 5% of patients at autopsy. This implies that many cases of pericarditis occur without symptoms severe enough to come to medical attention. What causes pericarditis?
In most patients with pericarditis, no specific cause can be found, and the condition is termed idiopathic pericarditis. Scientists now believe that many cases of idiopathic pericarditis are probably due to undiscovered viruses, such as the common cold virus, which infects and damages the pericardium. Specific diseases known to cause pericarditis are listed below. These diseases damage the pericardium, thereby triggering the body's immune defenses to attack the pericardium tissue and cause pericarditis. These diseases include:

Answer Pericarditis is a term which describes any inflammation of the pericardium. The pericardium is the membrane which surrounds the heart. There are two portions, an outer, fibrous sac which completely encloses the heart, and an inner membrane, which is called the serous pericardium. This is attached closely to the muscle of the wall of the heart. There is a very small amount of fluid in the sac, which prevents friction as the two surfaces slide over each other when the heart beats. Pericarditis can be caused by infections, bacterial or viral, or as a result of infection in the lungs, or trauma to the heart itself. In some cases the cause is unkown, in which case it is called idiopathic pericarditis.

Pericarditis
Pericardium Pericarditis Definition: Pericarditis is a disorder caused by inflammation of the pericardium, which is the sac-like covering of the heart. Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Pericarditis is usually a complication of viral infections caused by adenovirus and coxsackie virus. Less frequently, it can be caused by the polio influenza or rubella viruses. Infections with bacteria can lead to bacterial pericarditis (also called purulent pericarditis). Some fungal infections can also produce pericarditis. In addition, pericarditis can be associated with systemic diseases such as autoimmune disorders rheumatic fever tuberculosis , cancer, leukemia, kidney failure , HIV infections, AIDS and hypothyroidism. Heart disorders which can cause pericarditis include heart attack (see post-MI pericarditis ) and myocarditis . Radiation therapy to the chest and medications that suppress the immune system can also sometimes induce this condition. Pericarditis can also result from injury (including surgery) or trauma to the chest, esophagus or heart.

Common in adolescents and young adults, acute pericarditis affects males more than females. Pericardial effusion is a form that results when fluid builds up in the pericardium. It is a more serious condition that can require hospitalization and possibly surgery. Constrictive pericarditis is a form that is a chronic condition and worsens gradually over a long period of time. It may ultimately require surgery. Pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis can occur together. Signs and Symptoms The signs and symptoms of pericarditis vary somewhat. Acute pericarditis:
  • Chest pain Fever Flushed appearance Muscle pain Pain with swallowing Feelings of anxiousness, discomfort, or uneasiness

P ericarditis is inflammation of the pericardial sac surrounding the heart and the origins of the great vessels. The condition is most often caused by a viral infection and generally resolves in a few weeks with no sequelae. Severe pericardial syndromes are relatively uncommon, and their clinical features are largely determined by the amount and type of fluid produced by the inflammatory process. The normal pericardial sac contains 15 to 20 mL (maximum: 50 mL) of serous fluid, which lubricates cardiac motion. In pericarditis, the accumulation of serous fluid, inflammatory cells, and fibrin may compromise cardiac function. Over time, pericarditis can result in chronic inflammation with thickening and, ultimately, calcification of the pericardium. This condition is known as "chronic constrictive pericarditis." Conversely, rapid accumulation of serous fluid can result in acute compression of the cardiac chambers, with dire hemodynamic consequences. This condition, which is called "cardiac tamponade," may occur in up to 15 percent of patients with severe pericarditis.
