PATHOLOGICAL GAMBLING
What are its main features? Although each person is different, most people with pathological gambling have some or all of the following characteristics:
  • Preoccupation with gambling; Need to gamble with increasing amounts of money; Difficulty controlling or stopping gambling behavior; Returning to the place where they lost their money to recoup losses.
Some people gamble to escape from problems or to relieve depression, some because of the excitement. Whatever the reasons for gambling, pathological gamblers frequently end up having to lie to people they care for about how much they gamble or the consequences of their gambling. It is not unusual for them to engage in fraud or other criminal activities to obtain the money they need to gamble. What are the consequences of pathological gambling? Pathological gambling is not only associated with important money losses, but with a progressive disruption of the individualÂ’s life and, in many cases, of the lives of the people close to him. Many pathological gamblers lose their jobs and have increased emotional and medical problems. These serious personal and social problems, including financial, legal, occupational, medical and psychological difficulties, result in important costs to the individual, the family and society. What are the treatment options for pathological gambling?

More FAQ's about Compulsive Gambling How Common is Pathological Gambling and What is the Typical Course of the Disorder?
Pathological Gambling is very common in the United States and around the world.
Estimates suggest that between .77% and 3.4% of the US population may be diagnosed with Pathological Gambling. For most gamblers, there is a progressive increase in the amount wagered, frequency of gambling and preoccupation with gambling, especially while stressed or feeling depressed.
Pathological Gambling is more common in men than women. It often begins in adolescence and gamblers often present with as much as a 20 year history of gambling. Many gamblers either have or have had a substance abuse disorder or other addictive disorder, and most have a mood disorder such as depression.

Healthinmind
Mental Health Disorders Impulse Control Disorders Pathological Gambling Unlike the other disorders classified as impulse control disorders, pathological gambling is far from rare. The best current estimate is that 2 to 3% of the citizens of the United States are pathological gamblers. The costs to patients and their families is almost incalculable. A summary of the criteria for diagnosis from DSM-IV includes the following: the person is preoccupied with gambling, needs to gamble with increasing amounts of money to experience the original thrill, has tried to cut back (without success, of course), is restless when not gambling, lies to all concerned about the gambling, has lost a relationship, job, and money, and relies on others to get out of trouble. The typical pathological gambler is affable, self-centered, and often likeable. Most are male, and many have committed illegal acts to support their habits. With the rise in the number of Indian casinos, there may well be an associated increase in the number of pathological gamblers. Individual cures are extremely difficult to come by. Gamblers Anonymous (GA), patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous, offers some hope, and Gam-Anon offers support for families of Pathological Gamblers. Few who only enter GA actually quit gambling, but if they enter GA and go to an inpatient treatment facility, recovery rates approach 50% for those who complete the program. Families of pathological gamblers may have a better chance of adapting to the problems than the gambler has of stopping the creation of the problems.
