Although not necessary, the testimony of a medical expert supports the use of the HGN test in the broader community, not just law enforcement, and gives the weight of medicine to the validity of the test. It is preferable to use an expert with an interest in the subject beyond just testifying as an expert and who has actually witnessed officers administering the test. NOTE: The following examination is intended only as a sample. It is adaptable to any medical expert you intend to call. Be sure to discuss the questions in advance with your expert to determine his ability to answer all questions. Delete those which are not appropriate for your expert. Depending on your expert's experience and training, there are many more questions you could ask to qualify the witness as a expert. Do not diminish your expert's credibility by underplaying the qualifications.

Balancing the caloric-induced nystagmus velocity with cold air and water. Publication or Journal: Br J Audiol Volume: Page Numbers: Year Published: View the entry for this publication in PubMed
Abstract: A useful alternative to the traditional water caloric is to use an air stimulus. However, the caloric test has not been standardized and a range of parameters are being used in different audiology clinics. The aim of this study was to determine cold air parameters that resulted in a similar slow-component eye velocity to that for water irrigation. Twelve normal subjects underwent caloric testing using air temperatures in the range 18-33 degrees C. The duration and air-flow rate were held constant at 60 s and 5 l/min. A water irrigation at 30 degrees C for 30 s and delivering 150 ml resulted in a mean slow-component eye velocity of 17 degrees/s. An equal response was obtained with an air temperature of 21.0 degrees C. Further work is required to find equivalent air and water responses for other combinations of parameters.

    b. Vestibular Nystagmus (continued):
    There are two types:
    1. Peripheral Vestibular nystagmus.
    2. Central Vestibular nystagmus.
We are not talking anymore about the vestibular nystagmus as a physiologic response but as a symptom of a lesion or disorder in the vestibular labyrinth, or in the vestibular nerve or in the central nuclei or central vestibular pathways. 1) General characteristics a) Direction If the patient has a vertical nystagmus (upward or downward) he will see things turning around a horizontal bitemporal axis. If he has a type of rotatory nystagmus, things will move about a horizontal anteroposterior axis. These are the most frequently observed types of nystagmus. Occasionally we see an oblique nystagmus which seldom is a very neat one. b) Intensity The second thing that we notice is the "intensity." It has been graded as "F irst degree " when the nystagmus is only visible during gaze in the direction of the quick component. " Second degree " when the nystagmus is present on forward gaze, and "T hird degree " when present during gaze also in the direction of the slow component.

Mots-Clés : Ésotropie, Blocage, Nystagmus, Traitement médical, Strabisme accommodatif, Diplopiaphobia, Paralysie du Droit Externe, Cyclotropie, Compensation sensorielle, Prisme, Occlusion, Orthoptie, Correction optique Summary : The "blockage syndrome", may be found in different pathologic types of Esotropias : in Nystagmus (Nystagmus with Esotropias, Esotropias with Nystagmus compensation syndrome) in refractive Accommodative Esotropias, in diplopiaphobia, in Esotropias with rectus primary abducens paralysies, in decompensated microstrabismus, in the pseudo-blockage syndrome of cyclotropia. The medical treatment aims to improve the sensorial conditions (sensorial compensation of Nystagmus) : vision, binocularity, fusion. Prisms, occlusions, orthoptics are good medical aids, but the exact optic correction of hypermetropia and of myopia is the only necessary and sometimes sufficient medical treatment in those cases of Esotropia with a blockage syndrome.
