Paresthesia
Paresthesia is a term that refers to an abnormal burning or prickling sensation which is generally felt in the hands, arms, legs, or feet, but may occur in any part of the body. The sensation, which arises spontaneously without apparent stimulus and is usually not painful, may also be described as tingling or numbness, skin crawling, buzzing, or itching. Most people have experienced transient (temporary) paresthesia at some time in their lives; it occurs whenever inadvertent pressure is placed on a nerve and causes what many describe as a "pins and needles" feeling. The feeling quickly goes away once the pressure is relieved. For some people, however, paresthesia can become a chronic condition caused by an underlying disorder. It more frequently occurs as a symptom of more widespread neurological disease or traumatic nerve damage. Paresthesia can be caused by disorders affecting the central nervous system, such as stroke , transient ischemic attack, multiple sclerosis transverse myelitis , and encephalitis . A tumor or vascular lesion such as an arteriovenous malformation pressed up against the brain or spinal cord can also cause paresthesia. A wide range of conditions including diabetes , hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiencies, alcoholism, heavy metal poisoning (lead, arsenic, and other metals), and nerve entrapment syndromes, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, can also damage peripheral nerves (peripheral neuropathy) and cause paresthesia. Connective tissue disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus also can cause peripheral neuropathy and lead to paresthesia.

Parasthesia / Paresthesia
Paresthesia is a temporary or permanent loss of sensation that can occur after oral surgery. The numbness results from pressure or damage to the nerve, usually occurs after an extraction, and affects the tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, cheek, lip, or chin. Paresthesia mostly occurs after third molar, or wisdom tooth, extractions as the roots of the bottom wisdom teeth are close to the inferior alveolar nerve canal in the mandibular (lower) jaw. Paresthesia also occurs less frequently as a result of a dental implant procedure and anesthetic injections. Temporary paresthesia is usually described as a tingling sensation and occurs when pressure is placed on a nerve. Most people have experienced some kind of paresthesia, usually described as a “pins and needles" sensation. When pressure to the nerve is relieved, the feeling usually dissipates. Paresthesia in the mouth generally feels like a tooth is numbed with anesthetic, however, the numbness doesn't go away after a few hours and persists for days, weeks, or even months.

Jeans: A Britney Spears favourite TRENDY JEANS WARNING Trendy hipster jeans could be a health hazard, doctors have warned. The tight, low-rise trousers popularised by Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears can squeeze a sensory nerve under the hipbone and lead to a condition called paresthesia. The condition causes a tingling sensation in the thighs, said Dr Malvinder Parmar, medical director at the Timmins and District Hospital in the Canadian city of Ontario. While the nerve damage is not too serious, the symptoms might last if the jeans are worn regularly, the doctor added. He told how he had treated three women who were suffering from the irritating condition after wearing hip-huggers for between six and eight months. "All had symptoms of tingling or a burning sensation ... and mild local tenderness," he said in a letter to the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The symptoms disappeared within six weeks after he advised the women to wear loose-fitting clothing.

Forum: The Neurology and Neurosurgery Forum
Topic: Neurology - General ID From To Post Q hudy
(05-May-04) Im a 58 year old woman.I've posted in gastroenterology, but have a new problem. 6 weeks ago I had three 5 minute periods of calf pain while playing the organ, sitting in the car, and walking.Since then I have had a problem with my left leg feeling hot - from the inside, not the outside. Front of leg, from knee to ankle, feels hot for a few seconds, happening every few minutes. Heat not apparent from outside, no swelling. It's settling down now, only 10 or 20 times a day. Past history includes glossopharyngeal neuralgia, lupus-like illness, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, non-specific colitis, possibly due to post-infectious IBS, manometrically-diagnosed impaired esophageal motility with very weak peristalsis, and DES, and also this past month, nausea after eating fat of any kind. No one can seem to connect the dots. A head MRI was done, ruling out MS almost 100%. Blood tests ruled out scleroderma. Normal weight, high-ish cholesteral, impaired glucose, normal BP.
Questions:(1)What could this leg sensation be? (2)Any ideas on what the whole picture could be and how I should proceed. My family dr. thinks stress may be causing whole thing (I fail to see how stress can cause esophageal problem) but I think these problems are causing stress, not the other way around, because my marriage is good, my children doing well, and my career as a writer and church organist satisfying.
