Infectious Diseases Parasitic Infection Parasitic Infections: The most common parasitic infection of the CNS is neurosyphilis. It involves the infection of a microbial parasite, Treponema pallidum. Neurological symptoms do not appear until the secondary or later stages of the syphilis infection. They are characterized by chronic onset of paralysis and dementia. Many cases can be successfully treated before the CNS is involved. Examination of the CSF for presence of the organism (treponemes) is the definitive method to detect the CNS infection. Another parasitic infection is Lyme Disease, caused by Borellia burgdorferi. It is transmitted by a tick bite and begins with flu-like symptoms and skin rash. Symptoms may also include Bell's Palsy. The disease may progress to include encephalopathy, ataxia, and symptoms of meningitis.

AIDS - Parasitic Infections A person suffering from AIDS is susceptible to parasitic infections. Some of the common infections are listed as follows.
Cryptosporidiosis
Cryptosporidiosis (crypto) is a disease of the intestine (gut) which is caused by a parasite. Many people are exposed to crypto, but people with healthy immune systems usually get rid of the parasite without getting any symptoms or illness. Your doctor can give you a test to find out if you have this disease by examining your feces (shit). There is another illness that people with AIDS get called cryptoccocal meningitis that is completely different from cryptosporidiosis.
Symptoms
People with cryptosporidiosis usually have watery diarrhea more than 4 to 6 times a day. Weight loss, nausea, vomiting, cramping, stomach pain, and fever are also common symptoms. These symptoms can develop slowly over time. If you've had diarrhea for a long time, you may be losing important vitamins, minerals, and fluids which you need to live. If you have chronic diarrhea or any of the other signs, you should see your doctor right away.

FDA clears way for nitazoxanide for treatment of diarrhea caused by two parasites.
FDA has approved orphan drug nitazaoxanide (Alinia-Romark) for oral suspension for treatment of diarrhea caused by the illnesses cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in patients 1 to 11 years old. This approval marks the first drug specifically for cryptosporidiosis and the only drug approved for giardiasis treatment in children that is available in a suspension. Both illnesses are caused by protozoans and are characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and weight loss. Giardiasis is associated with impaired growth in children living in developing nations. The efficacy of the drug was based on two controlled studies which revealed that a higher percentage of patients with diarrhea caused by the two illnesses treated with nitazoxanide showed signs of improvement compared with patients who did not receive it. Because nitazoxanide is an orphan drug, the sponsor obtains 7 years of exclusive marketing. For more information, visit the FDA Web site

Parasites
Hulda Clark's book The Cure for All Cancers sold millions of copies. She, like many others before her, was convinced that parasites are a critical factor in the development as well as treatment of cancer. Many years ago, I read something in Tibetan medicine about miniature copper colored forms of life that normal eyes cannot see that are pathologically linked to cancer. Writing almost at the same time in Europe instead of the Himalayas, Hildegard of Bingen, described her violet salve and said that the "vermes" will lick the salve and die. The word "vermes" has been translated "viruses," but a viral link to cancer remains a subject of debate, and one professional translator I know feels that "vermes" could also be translated "lice," not perhaps what we think of when we say parasite, but nevertheless something small and aggravating. The Tibetans and Hildegard possessed a remarkable clairvoyance and were able to witness internal operations of the body that scientists have yet to discover.

Parasitic Infections
Scabies - ectoparasite infection
Scabies is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei . The female mite tunnels into the skin laying her eggs along the burrow. The larvae will hatch within a few days. Scabies is highly contagious and is commonly caught by contact with animals. The characteristic of intense itching usually begins 30 - 40 days after the mite is acquired. It is most commonly found in the individuals webbing, cubital crease, elbows, lower abdomen and perineum. The itching is aggravated at night and black wavy burrow lines can be seen around the itching areas due to the burrowing mites. Itching papules will also arise accompanied by inflamed lymph nodules. The actual mite is white in color and can be seen if it is scraped away from the skin and onto a dark back ground.

A team of researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, lead by Professor Jordi Alberola, has demonstrated the efficacy and safety of a new type of antibiotic, belonging to the family called antimicrobial peptides, for treating canine leishmaniasis, which is a disease that also affects humans. It is the first time that these antibiotics have been demonstrated to be useful against parasitic diseases in real clinical situations. The antibiotic can also improve treatment of other infections, parasitic or not, in that no side effects have been observed and it is very difficult for organisms to develop resistance to them. In addition, it can also have a direct application as a drug for treating co-infection of leishmaniasis with HIV, which 10 % of people with AIDS suffer from. The findings will be published this month (February) in the magazine Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, which is the most prestigious in its field.
Twelve million people around the world are affected by leishmaniasis; 400 million more are at risk of suffering the disease and every year between 60,000 and 100,000 people die from it. Furthermore, nearly 2 million new cases are reported every year. The different forms of leishmaniasis are caused by unicellular parasites of the Leishmania genus, which are mainly spread by biting insects, similar to mosquitoes, called phlebotoms. Clinical manifestations range from slight cutaneous lesions to visceral complications that may lead to the individual’s death.

Parasitic Infections in Tortoises
A parasite is an organism that derives nourishment by feeding on or within another animal. The most noted parasite in tortoises are worms. But worms are only part of the parasitic picture, however, as many non-worm parasites exist as well. Common parasites include ticks, mites, as well as worms, and other intestinal parasites; such as protozoa.
Life Cycles of Parasites
There are generally two types of life cycles. In the direct life cycle, the immature form of the parasite can infect the same host in which it came from. For example, the adult parasite lives in the host’s intestine, lays eggs, which are passed in the stool, and then the eggs can infect the same host over again. Hookworms are an example of a parasite that has a direct life cycle.
In the indirect life cycle, the immature form must pass through a different type of host before it can re-enter and infect the host it came from. An example here would be roundworms. The adult worm lives in the tortoise. The immature form cannot re-infect the tortoise unless an intermediate host picks it up, and then it is reintroduced into another tortoise where it develops into the mature adult and the cycle starts all over again.
Many parasites have life cycles that include a phase of migrating through the body, often from the digestive system to the lungs or other organs such as roundworms. Others, including hookworms, migrate from their entrance through the skin to other organs.

Asian Centre of International Parasite Control It is well known that the prevalence of parasitic infections is high among low-income communities in the tropics. The infections not only have a serious impact on human health, but they are also proving a hindrance to economic growth and development. During the 1997 G8 Summit in Denver, then Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Ryutaro Hashimoto pointed out the importance of parasite control and stressed the need for international cooperation. As a result, the Asian Centre of International Parasite Control (ACIPAC) was established under the cooperation of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mahidol University and the Department of Communicable Diseases Control, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand as a research and training centre for health personnel and related sectors in malaria and parasitic diseases control. ACIPAC MISSION The mission of ACIPAC is to promote parasite control in the Southeast Asian Region with the expectation that at the end of the project the prevalence of parasitic infections in this region will be reduced to the level of a non-significant public health problem. The activity will include human resource development through training courses and operational research, human /information networking, and supportive role through the partnership implementation programme. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT In the first five-year plan, 23 March 2000 – 22 March 2005, ACIPAC will convene an International Training Course on Parasite Control Management organized in collaboration with the countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, such as Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam. The course will have its emphasis on soil-transmitted nematodes and malaria, the highest prevalence and the most common parasites in this region as an Integrated Project, using health education as a tool and school health as an entry point into the surrounding community.
