Pancreatitis
What is pancreatitis?
Your pancreas is a large gland behind your stomach and close to your duodenum. The pancreas secretes powerful digestive enzymes that enter the small intestine through a duct. These enzymes help you digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. The pancreas also releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. These hormones play an important part in metabolizing sugar. Pancreatitis is a rare disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed. Damage to the gland occurs when digestive enzymes are activated and begin attacking the pancreas. In severe cases, there may be bleeding into the gland, serious tissue damage, infection, and cysts. Enzymes and toxins may enter the bloodstream and seriously injure organs, such as the heart, lungs, and kidney. There are two forms of pancreatitis. The acute form occurs suddenly and may be a severe, life-threatening illness with many complications. Usually, the patient recovers completely. If injury to the pancreas continues, such as when a patient persists in drinking alcohol, a chronic form of the disease may develop, bringing severe pain and reduced functioning of the pancreas that affects digestion and causes weight loss.

Pancreatitis in Cats
Main Index Cats Diseases and Problems
PANCREATITIS IN CATS Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, is a disease seen frequently in dogs. In cats it used to be considered rare but we now believe that it is simply difficult to diagnose when it occurs and is probably a common problem, especially in older cats. The pancreas is an important organ located near the small intestine. It is responsible for the production of most of the enzymes that digest food, and it also produces insulin. When the pancreas is diseased or injured, the enzymes it produces leak in and around the pancreas, damaging it and the other organs nearby. These enzymes that are leaking out break down fat and protein locally, instead of traveling down the pancreatic duct to the intestines. In effect, the cat or dog digests its own tissues. The abdomen soon becomes inflamed, and may subsequently become infected. An animal with pancreatitis may show such symptoms as lethargy, fever, vomiting, diarrhea (which is often bloody), refusal to eat and abdominal pain. Symptoms may start suddenly or come on gradually, and can range from mild and intermittent to severe and life threatening. In cats it is often subtle, appearing as vague signs such as poor appetite or gradual weight loss, without the more dramatic signs that are usually seen in dogs. The disease may be seen in any breed at any age, but it seems to be more common in older pets. Pancreatitis occasionally occurs soon after ingestion of garbage, dead animals or a fatty meal (scraps of fatty meat, cheese, whole milk, chicken skins, etc.). In many cases, however, the disease is caused by the body

Pancreatic Insufficiency
HomeVet This disorder of the digestive system is potentially life threatening (particularly in its acute form) but often responds well to treatment. It is more common in some breeds than others and is frequently seen in German Shepherd Dogs. Successful treatment of pancreatic problems requires close cooperation between owner and veterinarian, as well as a certain flexibility in working with changes in the animal's condition. The pancreas serves two separate functions, endocrine and exocrine. The endocrine gland secretes hormones, notably insulin, and the most feared pancreatic malfunction seen by endocrinologists (human and veterinary alike) is of course diabetes. The exocrine gland secretes enzymes into the small intestine, aiding digestion. Pancreatic insufficiency in dogs is not, thus, an endocrine problem like diabetes but rather an exocrine problem, referring to the organ's failure to produce digetive enzymes. The condition is therefore properly referred to as Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, often shortened in the veterinary field to EPI. Some authorities note that pancreatitis (the acute form) is particularly common in spayed, overweight females in middle age, and most agree that excessive amounts of fat in the diet are likely to trigger this form. As to animals suffering from EPI that have not previously had pancreatitis, some sources designate an onset by the age of two to three years in previously healthy animals, but seldom later. The prevalence of the chronic disease in German Shepherd Dogs has led to speculation about genetic links.

Pancreatitis in Dogs and Cats
Pancreatitis in Cats and Dogs The pancreas (image normal pancreas) is an organ in the body located next to the small intestine just after the stomach. It has two primary functions. It is an integral part of the digestion of food and it is the primary organ responsible for regulation of blood sugar in the body. When the pancreas is diseased, it can result in a very painful and debilitating condition called acute pancreatitis. Disease of the pancreas may also cause diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes) or chronic pancreatic insufficiency, EPI. EPI results in the inability of the body to digest foods properly. Pancreatitis has been documented in dogs for many years. Until recently it was not thought to exist in cats. A recent study has shown that acute pancreatitis. is almost as frequent in cats as dogs. Chronic forms are more common than acute forms. Pancreatic insufficiency and pancreatic cancer are less common than inflammatory disease. Other forms of pancreatic disease in cats are cysts and pancreatic parasites. Acute pancreatitis (image acute pancreatitis The cause in most cases is not known. Several cases have been reported that were caused by trauma, abscessation of the pancreas, ingestion of certain food borne toxins, and of pancreatic duct obstruction. In cats, infectious agents such as toxoplasma, herpesvirus, FIP, and feline parvovirus may cause pancreatitis. . Some cases of liver disease may also cause pancreatitis, such as cholangiohepatitis and fatty liver disease in cats.
