A hormone-producing tumor in the pancreas or a neuroendocrine pancreatic tumor was first described in 1902. Since then, at least five different clinical syndromes associated with these tumors have been described, i.e. the insulinoma, gastrinoma, WDHA (watery diarrhea hypokalemia hypochlorhydria syndrome or VIP-oma), glucagonoma and somatostatinoma syndromes. About one third of neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors do not present any hormone-related symptoms and are called non-functioning. The majority of tumors can give rise to metastases with time if they are left untreated with the exception of insulinomas which are usually benign. Clinical presentation Neuroendocrine tumors occur with the same frequency in men and women and the median age at diagnosis is 53 years (range 18-80). The annual incidence of neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors is about 3.5-4/ 1 million inhabitants. Some of the tumors (a fifth in our patient material) can be hereditary as a part of a disease called MEN 1 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1), in which also other hormone-producing organs can be involved (the parathyroids and the pituitary). The diagnosis is verified by demonstrating hormone-producing properties in tumor tissue specimen obtained by biopsies or at surgery. Neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors like carcinoids have the property to stain positively with the Grimelius' silver stain. Another important staining technique is the use of specific antibodies against chromogranin, which also stain the majority of tumors.

INSULINOMA
I have an extremely rare form of cancer called an Insulinoma. It is also known as a Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumor. I am currently undergoing experimental treatment and am attempting to locate and correspond with other individuals who also have this condition. I am hoping to start an online support system because I have not been successful in finding a cancer support group that fits my needs and addresses my specialized concerns, specific to my illness. If you or someone you know also has this condition, please e-mail me.
