High carbohydrate diet implicated in pancreatic cancer
A diet high in carbohydrates may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer in sedentary and overweight women, some new US research suggests. The study is the first to implicate a modifiable risk factor other than smoking in the development of pancreatic cancer Journal of the National Cancer Institute [Abstract/ Free Full Text] Led by Dr Dominique Michaud of the US National Cancer Institute, and Charles Fuchs of the Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, the researchers set out to determine if foods that raise glucose levels after eating were linked to the development of pancreatic cancer.

Purpose of the Study
Mayo Clinic scientists are working with other scientists throughout the U.S. to identify susceptibility genes for pancreatic cancer, and to learn whether these genes manifest through exposure to cigarette smoking. The large research study is being conducted by the Pancreatic Cancer Genetic Epidemiology (PACGENE) Consortium and is funded by the National Cancer Institute. The purpose of the study is to compare any inherited or genetic characteristics from blood and tissue specimens collected from individuals who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the blood and tissue of their family members. We will study responses to a family history and lifestyle survey and biospecimens (blood and tissue) to look for patterns of inheritance of cancer risk.

    Overview
To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us According to the National Cancer Institute, about 26,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, or carcinoma of the pancreas, each year. Pancreatic hormones help the body use or store the energy that comes from food. For example, insulin helps control the amount of sugar (a source of energy) in the blood. The pancreas releases insulin and other hormones when they are needed. The hormones enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. More than 100 different types of cancer are knownand several types of cancer can develop in the pancreas. Most pancreatic cancers begin in the ducts that carry pancreatic fluids. A rare type of pancreatic cancer begins in the cells that produce insulin and other hormones. These cells are called islet cells, or the islets of Langerhans. Cancers that begin in these cells are called islet cell cancer. As pancreatic cancer grows, the tumor may invade organs that surround the pancreas, such as the stomach or small intestine. Pancreatic cancer cells also may break away from the tumor and spread to other parts of the body. When pancreatic cancer cells spread, they often form new tumors in lymph nodes and the liver, and sometimes in the lungs or bones. The new tumors have the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary (original) tumor in the pancreas. For example, if pancreatic cancer spreads to the liver, the cancer cells in the liver are pancreatic cancer cells. The disease is metastatic pancreatic cancer; it is not liver cancer.

Previously, the only known risk factor for pancreatic cancer, which kills 30,000 people a year in the United States, was smoking. The researchers found that the risk for women who are both overweight and sedentary is 2.5 times higher. What role does diet and insulin have in the increased risk of pancreatic cancer?

Cancer Information:
Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic Cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the second most common gastrointestinal malignancy, with nearly 29,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It is one of the most difficult cancers to diagnose because the pancreas lives in a "silent" area of the body. A cancer is a new and abnormal growth that grows uncontrolled and invades the surrounding tissues and sometimes metastasizes (i.e. spreads to other organs). Sometimes the terms tumor and cancer are used synonymously, but this can be misleading. A tumor is not necessarily a cancer. The word tumor simply refers to an abnormal mass. A cancer or neoplastic growth is the same as a malignancy or malignant growth. When someone is diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor, it usually requires further testing to confirm that it is a cancer (or malignant tumor). These tests include:

Participants will receive Arsenic trioxide intravenously for five days in a row, once every 4 weeks. Patients will be monitored for response with CT scans (a special type of X-ray that can produce detailed pictures of structures inside the body), and weekly blood tests will be obtained to monitor for the side effects of chemotherapy. Patients will stay on the Arsenic trioxide for as long as their tumor does not grow and the side effects are tolerated.

    http://www.post-gazette.com/healthscience/20010711cancer0711p2.asp
Study finds smoking triggers earlier pancreatic cancer Wednesday, July 11, 2001 By Byron Spice, Science Editor, Post-Gazette Cigarette smoking, already known to double the risk of pancreatic cancer, may also cause the deadly cancer to strike decades earlier in smokers than in nonsmokers. A study of almost 500 people with hereditary pancreatitis found that smokers developed pancreatic cancer about 20 years earlier than nonsmokers did. The findings, which appear as a letter in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, provide insight into how smoking affects cancers in organs that are not directly exposed to smoke, said Dr. David Whitcomb, a gastroenterologist at the University of Pittsburgh and a study co-author. Smoking also increases the risk of cervical, bladder and kidney cancers. Hereditary pancreatitis is a rare genetic disease that causes chronic inflammation of the pancreas, a gland that produces digestive enzymes and such hormones as insulin. Only about 1,000 Americans have this disease, but researchers are interested in studying these patients because they are at high risk for pancreatic cancer. People in the general population have a little less than a 1 percent risk of developing pancreatic cancer by age 70; people with hereditary pancreatitis face a 40 percent risk, Whitcomb said.

In two trials targeting some of the most challenging traits of pancreatic tumor cell growth, researchers from Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC) at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) have demonstrated success in slowing and preventing tumor development. The NCCC research team was led by Dr. Murray Korc, a pioneer in early research on growth factor receptors in pancreatic cancer, and chair of the department of medicine at DMS and DHMC. An endocrinologist and cancer biologist, he focuses much of his research on the mechanisms that make pancreatic cancer so resilient and aggressive. Work reported in the May 15 issues of Clinical Cancer Research and Cancer Research addresses the team’s latest advances.
