Stanford University Medical Center Introduction to the FAQ
    (answers to frequently asked questions)
This section consists of our version of "answers" to very general pre-selected questions about pancreatic cancer. This task is not easy, as there are controversies in virtually every aspect of its related diagnosis and treatment. Also, information regarding such treatment is in a constant state of flux, with the results of new studies often challenging assumptions or pushing our understandings just a little further along. Additionally, general guidelines frequently do not apply to individual circumstances. Each person's situation is unique. If a cookbook-approach could work well in these circumstances, doctors would not be needed. And make no mistake about it, in our view, a strong bond with a compassionate and knowledgeable physician-specialist is mandatory. Our brief answers are attempts to give a sense of overview to these very complicated subjects. There are whole books dedicated to many of these individual subjects, so our answers are (at best) summaries. Because they are designed as summaries, it is possible that whole areas of controversy are inadvertently (or intentionally) ignored or not given proper weight. So be careful when reading these answersall of the information given here needs to be checked out with your own doctor. And do not base any action or lack of action on these answers, they are meant for educational purposes only! Please read the

    http://www.cancer-info.com/pancreas.htm
Pancreas / Pancreatic Cancer Description of Pancreatic Cancer Cancer of the pancreas is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. The pancreas is about 6 inches long and is shaped something like a thin pear, wider at one end and narrowing at the other. The pancreas lies behind the stomach, inside a loop formed by part of the small intestine. The broader right end of the pancreas is called the head, the middle section is called the body, and the narrow left end is the tail. The pancreas has two basic jobs in your body. It produces juices that help you break down (digest) your food, and hormones (such as insulin) that regulate how your body stores and uses food. The area of the pancreas that produces digestive juices is called the exocrine pancreas. About 95% of pancreatic cancers begin in the exocrine pancreas. The hormone-producing area of the pancreas is called the endocrine pancreas. Only about 5% of pancreatic cancers start here. This statement has information on cancer of the exocrine pancreas. For more information on cancer of the endocrine pancreas (also called islet cell cancer) see the PDQ Patient Information Statement on Islet Cell Carcinoma. Cancer of the pancreas is hard to find (diagnose) because the organ is hidden behind other organs. Organs around the pancreas include the stomach, small intestine, bile ducts (tubes through which bile, a digestive juice made by the liver, flows from the liver to the small intestine), gallbladder (the small sac below the liver that stores bile), the liver, and the spleen (the organ that stores red blood cells and filters blood to remove excess blood cells). The signs of pancreatic cancer are like many other illnesses, and there may be no signs in the first stages. You should see your doctor if you have any of the following: nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss without trying to lose weight, pain in the upper or middle of your abdomen, or yellowing of your skin (jaundice).

Welcome to Pancreatic Cancer online, my attempt to share all the information I've come across in my reasearch into pancreatic cancer and the alternative treatment options that I've come across in my research. My name is David Rosenberg, and my father, Mort Rosenberg, passed away in 1994 from pancreatic cancer. During this time, I spent a great deal of time researching any treatment options I could find that had any positive results for pancreatic cancer. I looked for both medical and alternative therapy options, and the only criterea I used was that the option show positive, verifiable results for survival of pancreatic cancer. Since I know how quick and deadly this disease is, I thought I should try to share the information I came across so that people interested in looking for alternatives for PC wouldn't have to start from scratch in their research. While I don't claim to have information on all the alternatives out there, I have tried to put up information on those alternatives for pancreatic cancer that have these kind of verifiable positive results of any kind. During our research, we come across a myriad of product and treatment options and from these we culled the ones that made sense to us. We have broken these options into two categories:

29,000 people in the United States and 60,000 Europeans will learn that they have pancreatic cancer this year. In 1995 this site was founded to aggregate current information about pancreatic cancer for them and others worldwide who are afflicted with this condition. Since that time the site manager has changed but the message remains. The Pancreatic Duct is intended to offer a solid introduction to pancreatic cancer. It is intended to provide credible information about pancreatic cancer to enable the patient and their loved ones to learn about the disease. To help them to understand and better accept what is happening to them. And to help them participate effectively as an active part of their health care team. Information about the founder of this site and his experiences with pancreatic cancer are located in the Founder section.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease that swiftly robs patients of both quality and quantity of life. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. In 2001, an estimated 29,200 new cases will be diagnosed, and 28,900 people will die from the disease. Most of these tumors will be ductal adenocarcinomas, from which there currently is little chance of long-term survival median survival is six months or less, and only four percent of patients are alive five years after diagnosis. Given its incidence and almost universal fatality, substantially increased research efforts are clearly warranted to understand, prevent, and control this disease. Pancreatic cancer has been understudied in both basic research laboratories and the clinic. In terms of total research dollars, total numbers of researchers, and numbers of researchers who are highly focused on this disease, pancreatic cancer lags significantly behind all of the most common tumors, despite their far more favorable survival rates. For example, in 1999, pancreatic cancer research received only $17.3 million in National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding.

    Scientists slow pancreatic cancer growth
    United Press International
    Monday , May 17, 2004
LEBANON, N.H., May 17, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) Researchers in New Hampshire have demonstrated success in slowing tumor development in pancreatic cancer cases. Dartmouth University scientists focused on the over-expression of a molecule that hampers chemotherapeutic efforts in pancreatic cancer, said a statement released by the school Monday. The molecule, VEGF, is responsible for angiogenesis, a process that stimulates blood vessel formation. In pancreatic cancer cells, there is a 90-fold higher level of VEGF than in normal cells, which enables the cancer cells to grow and metastasize quickly and efficiently. Researchers injected a protein "sponge" known as VEGF-trap into mice bearing pancreatic tumors derived from four different human pancreatic cancer cells. The sponge was found to absorb much of the angiogenetic VEGF molecules, thereby slowing the blood vessel proliferation and suppressing tumor growth. Pancreatic cancer is notorious for its ability to spread quickly and fatally, while becoming increasingly resistant to traditional chemotherapy.
