Imagery, relaxation techniques help kids cope with pain
In this story: The mind-body connection Mysterious pain RELATEDS By Daryn Eller (WebMD) When 10-year-old Amanda Mellencamp recently awoke in the middle of the night complaining of a tummy ache, her mother Ann didn't offer her Pepto-Bismol or simply invite her to snuggle up. Instead, she made a rather unorthodox suggestion: "Why don't you practice your imagery?" she asked.

A look at this disorder and what it means, the pain and what may bring it on, and suggested lifestyle changes.
http://www.crha-health.ab.ca/hlthconn/items/angina.htm
Angina ("Angina Pectoris") For many people there are warning signs that the blood supply to the heart muscle is becoming poor. These warning signs can appear long before any permanent heart damage, a heart attack , occurs. One of these warning signs is 'angina'. Angina is the pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart muscle isn't getting enough oxygen from the blood to meet its needs. Like a heart attack, angina pain can involve the chest, neck, jaw, shoulders, arms and back, but it is relieved quickly by rest, or sometimes by medications such as nitroglycerine, and no permanent heart damage occurs. In addition, some people become aware that the blood supply to their heart is reduced because they begin to have shortness of breath or unusual tiredness when doing activities they used to find easy. At first, angina pain may only happen during times when the heart has to work harder. For example, during exercise, when out in cold weather or extreme heat, following a large meal or during periods of increased excitement or stress. As the blood flow through the 'coronary arteries' (the arteries that supply the needs of the heart - see diagram below) continues to decrease, however, angina may begin to occur at rest as well. Angina pain usually occurs as a result of gradual narrowing and hardening of the coronary arteries ( atherosclerosis ), but may also occur as a result of a blood clot, spasms in the arteries, rapid heart rate or irregularities in the heart beat (arrhythmias).

Exercise for back pain
Active therapies (exercises) are typically necessary to rehabilitate the spine and help alleviate pain. Importantly, a regular exercise routine provides patients with the means to help avoid recurrences of low back pain, and helps reduce severity and duration of potential future episodes of low back pain. Stretching
A hamstring stretching routine should include applying pressure to lengthen the hamstring muscle for 30-45 seconds at a time, one to two times each day. The pressure on the muscle should be applied evenly and bouncing should be avoided, since a bouncing motion will trigger a spasm response in the muscle being stretched. The hamstring muscle may be stretched in a number of different ways. Options for hamstring stretching, listed from most difficult to least difficult, include:

The Pain When Will It End? Book and Book Tour News
The first trade paperback collection of the best cartoons from The PainWhen Will It End? is being published by Fantagraphics Books . The book should be available in bookstores on the East Coast by June 9, and in the uncivilized territories a week later. It is now available for pre-ordering on Since Fantagraphics will be expending a budget of $0.00 for publicity, Tim Kreider, author of The Pain , and his webmaster, technical advisor, and frequent collaborator Dave Israel will be embarking on a soon-to-be-legendary whirlwind road trip/promotional tour of the East Coast sometime in late June of 2004. We will definitely be visiting Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Ithaca, and State College. Trips out to the West Coast, the South, and possibly Chicago are being vaguely but enthusiastically planned over pitchers of beer. We have yet to determine the other stops on our itinerary, so we are asking you, loyal readers, to tell us why we should visit your town. Promises of free lodging, beers, and any other expressions of appreciation and hospitality will count for much. E-mail your persuasive and tempting offers to: timothykreider@aol.com
