Did You Know That Arthritis Could Cost You Extra Years Of Your Life?
Many Doctors And Medicines Claim To Help Arthritis- Find Out Why They Don't Work
More than 70% of all people in the United States currently suffer from some type of arthritis. This is a staggering number that is on the rise. Every year more than 750,000 new people experience the pain and frustration that comes with arthritis. Many people don't know where to turn other than to their primary care physician. Others try using over-the-counter drugs to no avail. These are only temporary solutions that merely stop the pain for a short period of time- never treating the underlying disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. Some types can lead to blindness, deafness, paralysis… and even premature death! With so many different types, it is difficult for any doctor to diagnose arthritis properly. Many times they will tell you that you simply have arthritis and to take a common over-the-counter medicine. While these medicines may delay the pain, they do not help it to go away. We would like to show you a way you can get the help you need for your arthritis. That is why we offer a FREE initial evaluation to properly diagnose the problem and offer an effective solution.

    Wrist fractures and osteoporosis
FROM Wrist fractures and osteoporosis: A new study of health claims indicates that only 1 out of 4 older women who fracture their wrists is tested or treated for osteoporosis. Kevin B. Freedman, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and colleagues examined records of health plans in 30 states. They identified 1,162 women age 55 and older whose wrists were fractured between 1994 and 1997.

OSTEOPOROSIS:  Nutritional Causes, Prevention and Therapies
Many individuals rely on extra amounts of Calcium + Vitamin D when trying to treat and/or prevent
osteopenia (early stages of bone loss) or osteoporosis, and when unsuccessful, they generally resort
to using drugs specifically formulated to stop the progression of this disease.
Long-term effects of many of these medications are still unclear since increased bone mass doesn't
always translate into increased bone strength.  On the other hand, when analyzing individual reasons
for developing osteoporosis, it becomes clear that most factors can be resolved through a change in
lifestyle, or through individually -tailored nutritional supplementation.
Without the addition of weight-bearing exercise however, no program for the treatment or prevention
of osteoporosis can be considered complete.  Climbing stairs, running, lifting weights - and to some extent walking - are all among those exercises considered beneficial in maintaining bone density, in contrast to activities such as swimming, which are less helpful for osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis drug may reduce risk of breast cancer
    FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER
  • One in nine women will develop the disease sometime during their lifetimes. Breast cancer is the second-deadliest cancer in women. Risk factors include increasing age, close relatives with breast cancer and history of noninvasive breast cancer. The risk for breast cancer increases as we get older. Women who carry a baby to full term in their early 20s have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have later first pregnancies or who have no children.

    Osteoporosis
Medical Author: Carolyn Janet Crandall, M.D.
Medical Editors: Dennis Lee, M.D. and William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is condition that features loss of the normal density of bone. Osteoporosis leads to literally abnormally porous bone that is more compressible like a sponge than dense like a brick. This disorder of the skeleton weakens the bone leading to an increase in the risk of breaking bones (bone fracture). Normal bone is composed of protein collagen and calcium. Osteoporosis depletes both the calcium and the protein from the bone, resulting in either abnormal bone quality or decreased bone density . Bones that are affected by osteoporosis can fracture with only a minor fall or injury that normally would not cause a bone fracture. The fracture can be either in the form of cracking (as in a hip fracture ) or collapsing (as in a compression fracture of the vertebrae of the spine). The spine, hips, and wrists are common areas of osteoporosis-related bone fractures, although fractures can also occur in other skeletal areas such as the ribs.

But the talk show host recently got a new perspective on her health after a routine visit to her doctor. "We're going through medical history, and he noticed that my mom had osteoporosis," Vieira said. "He said, 'Given your age, I really think that it would be wise for you to have a bone mineral density test.'" According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, a bone mineral density test is the only way to diagnose this disease, which usually has no early visible symptoms. Osteoporosis is characterized by a deterioration of bone tissues, which can make bones more susceptible to fractures.

Dr. Felicia Cosman: The facts about osteoporosis
Dr. Felicia Cosman, an osteoporosis specialist and the Medical Director of the Clinical Research Center at Helen Hayes Hospital, joined the CNN.com chat room on Wednesday to discuss osteoporosis and osteoporosis testing. CNN: Who needs to be concerned about osteoporosis? COSMAN: Everyone needs to be concerned about osteoporosis. This is an extremely common condition. About 1 in 2 women will have an osteoporosis-related fracture. Between 1 in 5 and 1 in 8 men will have an osteoporosis-related fracture. MORE STORIES Campaign urges osteoporosis testing CHAT PARTICIPANT: How much calcium does each age group need? COSMAN: Approximately 1200 milligrams, or at least that, for all individuals above the age of 50. Below that, 1000 milligrams a day for adults is probably sufficient. In practice, I go with 1200 for most people seeing me, because most are post-menopausal and above the age of 50. It's important to realize that the calcium target amount includes what's in the diet, plus a calcium or vitamin supplement if it's required. But people who get 1200 milligrams in their diet don't have to take a calcium supplement. CHAT PARTICIPANT: Does osteoporosis affect your entire skeletal body, as opposed to just one area?

    Exercise for Osteoporosis
Warren A. Katz, MD, with Carl Sherman
Series Editor: Nicholas A. DiNubile, MD THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 26 - NO. 2 - FEBRUARY 98 F or patients who have osteoporosis, exercise is an essential part of treatment. Just as regular workouts build muscle, they also maintain and may even increase bone strength. By strengthening your muscles and bones and improving your balance, exercise can reduce the risk of falls and resulting fractures. Exercise works well with estrogen or other medications that increase bone density and strength. Exercise, medication, and proper diet combat osteoporosis more effectively together than any one treatment alone could do. Remember that you're never too old to exercise. Here are some tips on how to start a program of weight-bearing exercise and resistance training that will benefit your bones and muscles and also help your general health.
    Weight-Bearing Exercise
For most people who have osteoporosis, brisk walking is ideal. It can be done anywhere, requires no special equipment, and carries minimal risk of injury. If walking is too difficult or painful for you, workouts on a stationary exercise cycle are a good alternative. The full benefits of walking come from a regular scheduleat least 15 to 20 minutes 3 to 4 days per week. But if you haven't been active for years, you may need to start modestly. Start at whatever level is comfortable for you. Five-minute walks are fine at first, but try increasing their length by 1 minute every other time until you reach the optimal exercise level.

    Guidelines for Diagnosing Osteoporosis
    Gail P. Dalsky, PhD
THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 24 - NO. 7 - JULY 96 If your browser does not support tables click here. In Brief: Women who are estrogen deficient have an increased risk of osteoporosis and future fractures. In recent years, improving technology and a consensus on the definition of osteoporosis have made it easier to measure bone density and assess the risk of osteoporosis. Density should be measured at two sites, the lumbar spine and the femoral neck. If only one measurement is possible, the site should be the lumbar spine in women younger than 65 and the femoral neck in women 65 and older. Treatment is recommended if a woman's bone density is more than one standard deviation below the young adult reference value. W omen who have menstrual dysfunction and low estrogen levels face a higher risk of osteoporosis and future fractures than women who have normal estrogen (1). Fortunately, bone density measurement techniques have become more precise and more widely available in recent years, and a consensus has emerged on the definition and intervention threshold for osteoporosis. Consequently, it is now possible to measure bone density at a relevant site such as the spine or proximal femur and determine the patient's corresponding fracture risk. Although active women often know their blood pressure, cholesterol level, and percent body fat, they are far less likely to know the status of their bone health. If they are amenorrheicwhich may be the case if they train rigorouslythey may incur an irreversible loss of bone density and consequently an increased risk for fracture in later life (2-4). Exercise cannot fully offset the negative effects of low estrogen levels on bone density, because a low estrogen level also reduces the positive effect of activity on bone (5).
