Osteoarthritis is the deterioration of cartilage in the joints, resulting in pain and soreness. The term osteoarthritis is a misnomer. "Osteo" is a prefix derived from the Greek word for bone and "itis" is a Greek suffix referring to inflammation. Logically, then, one might presume that "osteoarthritis" means inflammation of the bone. In reality, osteoarthritis produces little inflammation and the pain and soreness is caused by deterioration of cartilage in the joints. This condition is more accurately called degenerative joint disease . Many people who think they have arthritis actually have degeneration of the cartilage in the joints. The joints are the intersections of two bones. The ends of the bones are covered with

Exercise is a vital part of osteoarthritis treatment: It's a scientifically proven way for you to help yourself. The right kind of exercise will benefit the joints that have been damaged by osteoarthritis, and it will boost your overall energy and ability to enjoy your favorite activities. Different kinds of exerciseaerobic, strengthening, flexibility, and specific joint exercisescan improve your health in different ways. Aerobic exercise. Raising your heart rate strengthens your heart and lung power. It gives you energy and increases your endurance, letting you do the things you want to. It helps break the vicious cycle of pain, stiffness, and inactivity that can lead to disability. Depending on the joints involved, swimming, walking, and cycling (perhaps on a stationary exercise bicycle) are often the best exercises for people with osteoarthritis. The goal: 30 minutes of activity, most days of the week. But... Start slowly.

Exercises for Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis
Robert J. Petrella, MD, PhD THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 27 - NO. 11 - OCTOBER 15, 1999 R est is an important part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, but it must be balanced by regular exercise. Exercise is essential for two reasons: It keeps your joints from becoming stiffer, and it strengthens the muscles surrounding the joints. Strong muscles provide needed support, making movement easier and reducing pain. This program for patients with knee osteoarthritis consists of five main exercises (figures 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7), along with three alternatives (figures 3, 6, and 8) in case the main exercises are too difficult. To get the most out of these exercises, you need to gradually increase the number of repetitions and sets over the course of 7 weeks. The accompanying chart (table 1) can be used as a guide as you do the strength exercises. It will be helpful to mark the date when you start each new stage.
Stretching Exercises
Figure 1: Unloading the knee. Put a light weight (5 to 10 pounds) on your ankle and sit in a position that allows the leg to dangle (eg, on a bench, tall stool, edge of bed). Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, 1 to 3 times a day. Repeat for the other knee.

What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a disease which affects the joints in the body. The surface of the joint is damaged and the surrounding bone grows thicker. 'Osteo' means bone and 'arthritis' means joint damage and swelling (inflammation). When joints are swollen and damaged, they can be painful. They can also be difficult to move. Some other words are used to describe osteoarthritis, including 'osteoarthrosis', 'arthrosis' and 'degenerative joint disease'. Osteoarthritis of the knee is a very common form of osteoarthritis. Other joints which are often affected include joints in the hands, the spine, the hip joint and the big toe joint. You can find more information on osteoarthritis in

You are in: Arthritis Osteoarthritis Overview Osteoarthritis is not a single disease but rather the end result of a variety of disorders leading to the structural or functional failure of 1 or more of your joints. Osteoarthritis involves the entire joint including the nearby muscles, underlying bone, ligaments, joint lining (synovium), and the joint cover (capsule).
  • Osteoarthritis also involves an advancing loss of cartilage. The cartilage tries to repair itself, the bone remodels, the underlying (subchondral) bone hardens, and bone cysts form. This process has several phases.
