This site is a self-help guide for people who have significant trouble with anxiety and phobias.
Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and enjoy your life. You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name, and I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it, and so I'll use it here. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life. For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

The Infinite Mind: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Week of April 5, 1999 (Originally aired week of January 11, 1999) First we hear from broadcaster Marc Summers , a former host of Nickelodeon's children's show Double Dare, and currently host of Great Day America on PAX-TV. He had known he was different since early childhood, when he became obsessed with erasing pencil marks completely and thought that his parents might come to harm if his actions weren't perfect. But it wasn't until he interviewed an OCD expert on television that he realized he had the condition. With medication and behavioral therapy, his life, as he puts it, has been turned around. Next Dr. Goodwin is joined by Dr. Lorrin Koran , professor of psychiatry at Stanford University and head of the OCD clinic there, and by Janis McClure , the head of the Obsessive-Compulsive foundation of Jacksonville, Florida. Ms. McClure began suffering from OCD at the age of six.

    Obsessive-compulsive disorder
A woman visits her dermatologist, complaining of extremely dry skin and seldom feeling clean. She showers for two hours every day. A lawyer insists on making coffee several times each day. His colleagues do not realize that he lives in fear that the coffee will be poisoned, and he feels compelled to pour most of it down the drain. The lawyer is so obsessed with these thoughts that he spends 12 hours a day at work four of them worrying about contaminated coffee. A man cannot bear to throw anything away. Junk mail, old newspapers, empty milk cartons all "could contain something valuable that might be useful someday." If he throws things away, "something terrible will happen." He hoards so much clutter that he can no longer walk through his house. Insisting that nothing be thrown away, he moves to another house where he continues to hoard. A 10 year old girl keeps apologizing for "disturbing" her class. She feels that she is too restless and is clearing her throat too loudly. Her teachers are puzzled and over time become annoyed at her repeated apologies since they did not notice any sounds or movements. She is also preoccupied with "being good all the time". These people suffer obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than 2 percent of the U.S. population, or nearly one out of every 40 people, will suffer from OCD at some point in their lives. The disorder is two to three times more common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

For us doubt can be pathological. There is a need for certainty in OCD. Certainty is, of course, elusive. It is in this not knowing that compulsive ritual is born. The disorder asks, "What if?". The question comes unbidden. In answering that question we are lost. We are lost in a labyrinth of increasing anxiety unable to break free. Fear, horrific images, vivid terrifying consequences consume us. "What if?" is the obsession.

From our Bookstore Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for OCD "This book fills an important gap in the treatment literature. The coverage is detailed and thorough, providing a good balance of theory, research, and step-by-step clinical suggestions. Clark's expertise and experience, both as a scientist and a clinician, are evident in this extremely well-written work." DECADE OF THE BRAIN MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH
Research conducted and supported by the National Institute
of Mental Health brings hope to millions of people who suffer
from mental illness and to their families and friends. During the
past 10 years, researchers have advanced our understanding of the
brain and vastly expanded the capability of mental health
professionals to diagnose, treat, and prevent mental and brain
    disorders.
Now, in the 1990s, which the President and Congress have
declared the " Decade of the Brain, " we stand at the threshold of a new era in brain and behavioral sciences. Through research, we will learn even more about mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, panic disorder, and obsessive- compulsive disorder. And we will be able to use this knowledge to develop new therapies that can help more people overcome mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
