(CNN) Some Americans have become increasingly anxious about their health in the age of SARS, anthrax mailing scares and West Nile virus. But perhaps obesity should be a bigger concern. It's the No. 1 health threat in the United States at the moment, experts say. Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says that poor diet and exercise habits almost have caught up with smoking in contributing to the leading cause of death. Gerberding adds that 65 percent of American adults are overweight or obese and that nearly 40 million adults face serious health risks as a result of obesity. She calls the nation's rates of obesity a "catastrophe" and says the only way to improve these statistics is for people to make a radical change in their behavior, including more physical activity.

Popular weight control methods YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Obesity Diet and Fitness or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Americans are not just getting fatter, they are ballooning to extremely obese proportions at an alarming rate. The number of extremely obese American adults those who are at least 100 pounds overweight has quadrupled since the 1980s to about 4 million. That works out to about 1 in every 50 adults. Extreme obesity once was thought to be a rare, distinct condition whose prevalence remained relatively steady over time. The new study contradicts that thinking and suggests that it is at least partly due to the same kinds of behavior overeating and under-activity that have contributed to the epidemic number of Americans with less severe weight problems.

  • The prevalence of obesity increased from 12% in 1991 to 18% in 1998. Increases were seen in both sexes and all socioeconomic classes, with the greatest increase seen in 18- to 29-year-olds and in those who have achieved higher education4 Obesity rates are underestimated because overweight people tend to underestimate their weight and overestimate their height5
Etiology
  • Obesity is a chronic condition that develops as a result of an interaction between a person's genetic makeup and their environment. How and why obesity occurs are not well understood; however, social, behavioral, cultural, psychological, metabolic, and genetic factors are involved1

The government soon may try to change that by requiring or encouraging restaurants to display calories on their menus alongside the salads, entrees and desserts. The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that labeling menus is among several proposals it is considering to help people watch what they eat. Food companies already are required to put nutrition information on the backs of food packages, and nutrition advocates have been pressuring the government and the industry to impose similar requirements on the restaurant industry.

Obesity
The McDougall Program:
(Diet and Lifestyle Implications):

The most obvious and prevalent signs of malnutrition in our affluent country are the layers of blubber worn by most peopleusually to the despair of themselves and often to the disgust of their associates. It's estimated that, in 1987, 34 million people in the United States between the ages of 20 and 75 were overweight. A sizable percentage of these people go on one reducing diet after another, and exercise strenuously every day in order to keep whatever shape they've managed to attain.
In plain and simple terms, the cause of obesity is:
    1) Eating too much of foods that are too concentrated in calories. Especially the fats and oils which are present in natural foods or are added to foods being prepared for the table. "The fat you eat is the fat you wear."
    2) Not eating enough starches, because of the mistaken notion that "starches make you fat." The carbohydrate in starches satisfies the hunger drive. Fat offers very little satisfaction for the hunger drive.

News Companies McDonald's obesity suit tossed U.S. judge says complaint fails to prove chain is responsible for kids' weight gain. February 17, 2003: 2:46 PM EST By Jonathan Wald, CNN Writer NEW YORK (CNN) - A lawsuit alleging food from McDonald's restaurants is responsible for making people obese got thrown out by a federal judge Wednesday. The landmark legal action was the first of its kind against a fast-food chain to make its way into a U.S. courtroom. QUICK VOTE A U.S. judge ruled that McDonald's isn't responsible for an individual's obesity. Do you agree? Yes No View results McDonald's spokesman Walt Riker said that common sense had prevailed in the suit. "We said from the beginning that this was a frivolous lawsuit. Today's ruling confirms that fact." Although he dismissed the suit, Judge Robert Sweet granted the plaintiffs the option of filing an amended complaint within 30 days addressing the problems that Sweet found in the plaintiffs' original arguments. Sweet said some of the arguments could be compelling if addressed in more depth, including the allegation that the processing of McDonald's food makes it more dangerous than a customer would have reason to expect.

Welcome to Bariatric Solutions! We pride ourselves as a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the comprehensive care of obesity.
Treatment of Obesity
According to multiple scientific reports, including the 1991 National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus report, morbid or clinically severe obesity is a serious disease and must be treated as such. Perhaps no other medical condition has been more misunderstood, mistreated, or misrepresented. People who are at least 100 pounds over their ideal body weight suffer not only from severe health risks, but also from discrimination, ridicule, and misunderstanding. Surprisingly, there are even people within the medical profession who do not understand the most important aspects of the disease. The good news is that there is a solution that could help people achieve and maintain a more normal weight Â… even if they have struggled with excessive weight for most of their lives. Bariatric Solutions offers the Roux-en-Y Divided Gastric Bypass (RYDGB). This surgery is recognized by the National Institutes of Health as an effective treatment for clinically severe obesity.
Our Mission
Bariatric Solutions is committed to relieve suffering from clinically severe obesity by providing multidisciplinary care through scientific knowledge, medical technology, surgical expertise, and psychological and social insights.
