Overweight in Children and Adolescents
THE PROBLEM OF OVERWEIGHT IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
  • In 1999, 13% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 14% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in the United States were overweight. This prevalence has nearly tripled for adolescents in the past 2 decades. Risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, occur with increased frequency in overweight children and adolescents compared to children with a healthy weight. Type 2 diabetes, previously considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and adolescents. Overweight and obesity are closely linked to type 2 diabetes. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80% if one or more parent is overweight or obese. Overweight or obese adults are at risk for a number of health problems including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer. The most immediate consequence of overweight as perceived by the children themselves is social discrimination. This is associated with poor self-esteem and depression.

Study blames obesity for rise in disabilities
Story Tools WASHINGTON (AP) Disability rates rose sharply in the last two decades among those under 60, and obesity appears to be the main reason, according to a new study. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Obesity Diseases Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? The Rand Corp. study published in the journal Health Affairs said the health of young Americans is getting worse. It found the number of people ages 30-49 who could not care for themselves or do other routine tasks increased by more than half from 1984 to 2000. Meanwhile, the elderly have become less likely to suffer such disabilities. "We've always had the assumption that medical science is advancing and that people are getting healthier, but that is not the case," said Darius Lakdawalla, lead author of the study. For those 30- to 39-years-old, the number reporting disabilities increased from 118 per 10,000 people to 182 per 10,000 people from 1984 to 1996. Among those 40- to 49-years-old, the number rose from 212 per 10,000 to 278 per 10,000 in the same period.

Elizabeth Cohen: Obesity and cancer
Cohen The rates of diabetes and heart disease are rising rapidly in the U.S. and obesity is part of the problem. But most people don't know that being overweight can also increase a person's risk of cancer. CNN Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joined American Morning host Paula Zahn to tell the story. PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR : Most people realize being overweight is bad for your heart. But a new report out today explains that being fat also makes you more likely to get cancer. CNN medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joins us now for today's house call. They've hinted at this for years. ELIZABETH COHEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT : Yes. ZAHN : Is this the definitive study that would show that link? COHEN : Well, there's no such thing as a definitive study so, you know, who knows? But they won't be telling us that fat is OK.

Group wants adults screened for obesity
Story Tools PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) Health care workers should screen all adult patients for weight problems and suggest intensive counseling for those who are obese, an influential government task force is recommending. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Obesity Diet and Fitness Medical Research or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said behavioral therapy and high-intensity counseling can yield a "modest, sustained weight loss" in obese people. "Eating and exercising are behaviors in themselves and they're behaviors that are difficult to change," said Dr. Janet Allan, task force vice chair and dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. In a report being published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the task force analyzed previous studies of weight loss treatments and reviewed controlled trials involving counseling of obese adults. It found that intense counseling and behavioral therapy can typically result in weight loss of 6.6 to 11 pounds after at least one year.

Man's best friend shares obesity woes
Story Tools LONDON, England (Reuters) Obesity is the No. 1 health problem for dogs in Britain, according to a study released Thursday. The second-biggest health danger was traffic, with disc problems third. Almost three-quarters of physiotherapists questioned cited obesity in the survey by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy which deals with animals as well as humans. Like humans, dogs became obese because they were overfed and did not exercise enough, the study observed. "As a nation, we overfeed at mealtimes and tend to give 'tidbits' through the day as treats for our furry friends," said animal physiotherapist Charlotte Baldwyn. "Good health and fitness for the domestic pet is vital to a happy and long life." Reinforcing, perhaps, the old saying that owners tend to look like their dogs, official figures have showed the proportion of obese men and women in Britain hit a record high in 2001.

FDA's Obesity Working Group HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Tom Harkin Tommy Thompson or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (CNN) The Bush administration Friday announced a campaign to combat the epidemic of obesity in the United States through improved product labels, health education, and a partnership with restaurants to help steer people toward healthier menu choices. "It reflects our commitment to reversing this tragic obesity trend, in which far too many Americans are literally eating themselves to death," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said at a news conference unveiling the campaign. Thompson's comments were timed with a report from the Obesity Working Group of the Food and Drug Administration, stressing a theme of "calories count." The FDA, in accepting the group's recommendations, plans to take a variety of actions in response.

The Guardian
has recently published excerpts from a new book by Paul Campos entitled The Obesity Myth . The book argues that the claim so often repeated by your TV, that two thirds of the population of the United States is "overweight" or "obese," is an elaborate hoax designed to move the product. From the perspective of a profit-maximising medical and pharmaceutical industry, the ideal disease would be one that never killed those who suffered from it, that could not be treated effectively, and that doctors and their patients would nevertheless insist on treating anyway. Luckily for it, the American health care industry has discovered (or rather invented) just such a disease. It is called "obesity". Basically, obesity research in America is funded by the diet and drug industry - that is, the economic actors who have the most to gain from the conclusion that being fat is a disease that requires aggressive treatment. Many researchers have direct financial relationships with the companies whose products they are evaluating. Campos's position coincides neatly with what I have said over and over and over again. The U.S. war on "obesity" is an elaborate snow job. A definition of "overweight American" that puts two thirds of the American population in the "overweight" category is self-evident nonsense under any reasonable version of statistical logic. Moreover, Campos argues that the supposed ill health effects of obesity are not borne out by the evidence:
